Kid Rock (Not the Creepy One)

My first concert: Elvis. I was four. And I was singing at the top of my lungs.
Now, three decades later, I’m more in love with music than ever. And like any lovesick eighth grader worth her salt, I like to talk and squeal and giggle non-stop about my latest crush. So, okay, don’t tell anyone, but Mary Had a Little Amp is currently rocking my world.
It’s billed as "Music’s Biggest Stars/Childhood’s Greatest Songs" although frankly, I’ve never even heard of most of them. Even so, wow, what a great mixed tape this is. Listeners get an eclectic collection of excellent tuneage from sixteen artists including R.E.M., Jack Johnson, Maroon 5, Nancy Wilson, Roseanne Cash and Moby, to name a few. My favorite track depends on the day, but I think the Dixie Chicks’ melodies on The Rainbow Connection are singularly worth the price of admission.
Plus, proceeds from the collection benefit People For the American Way Foundation’s Start Smart America and Project Kid Smart, two programs that advance preschool education issues and opportunities.
It may not be an Elvis concert, but this CD is rocking. And I can promise you, my whole family is singing our guts out as we’re driving down the street. Even those of us who can’t talk. I can only hope The King would be proud of us. -Laura
