I try to be a homemaker, really I do. If only because I don’t want my son to grow up thinking cooking merely involves pushing the buttons on the microwave–currently my main culinary skill.
Fortunately, in this post-Betty Crocker age I found an easy option to help me become the cross between Nigela Lawson and Alice Waters I’m striving for: Kids Central Kitchen.
The mom-dad team of Maureen and Mark started the company when they couldn’t find prepared snacks that were up to their high standards for their kids’ tastes and health. So they made their own, people raved, and now we all get to reap the benefits of line of natural, whole grain baking mixes. There are awesome cookies, banana bread and even pancakes, none of which have any trans fats, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial whatever.
The cool thing is, the mixes are designed so kids can help. My three-year-old and six-year-old nieces really got into reading and following directions, measuring ingredients, working the timer and creating something that others absolutely loved. (Just ask my coworkers who made quick work of the leftover chocolate chip cookies).
Order online and stock up–may I suggest the Kid Choice Variety Pack? You never even have to tell anyone that the recipes are so easy, an 18 month old could do it. A chef’s got to have her secrets, right? –Laura
