One every minute.
And that just about knocked me out of my seat. Because most of it is avoidable.
There were all kinds of stats and figures and info about maternal mortality that I learned recently at a dinner to support the Mothers Day Every Day campaign, put on by CARE and the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. But the one that was most encouraging is learning that there is an entire force of influential women around the world committed to doing what they can to reduce the maternal mortality rate 75% by 2015. Think: Queen Raina of Jordan, UK First Lady Sarah Brown, Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi, and celebs as diverse as Diane Von Furstenburg, Christy Turlington Burns, Martha Stewart and Nicole Kidman.
And maybe you. (Because we know you’re a star in your own right.)
Check out the Mothers Day Every Day website and figure out if there’s something you can do. It’s been suggested that you donate the equivalent of your next purchase (maybe something seen on Cool Mom Picks?). That $10 or $20 or $400 will quite literally save moms and their babies.
We all know that women hold up the world. Maybe it will get a little easier when we hold each other up, too. –Liz
