I am a mama of three little ones, my oldest is five and we are running into a dilemma. There seems to be a lack of cute kids’ shoes after size 12. Please would you help? You guys always have the best recommendations! -Gabrielle
I’ve actually got the opposite problem over at my house, Gabrielle, with my teeny-footed kiddos. But luckily, a few of our favorite children’s shoe purveyors offer great picks up through size 12.
Ever since I was introduced to Umi shoes (pictured), it’s the only shoe I’ll buy for my son. Luckily, their girl styles are just as awesome, and most styles go up to 36 which is a big kid 4. They’re definitely on the pricey side, but considering how much my kids beat up shoes, I’d say they’re worth it.
Perennial favorite Stride Rite also offers a bunch of nice kids’ styles in bigger sizes that might surprise you if you tend to think of them as a sneaker company. The updated “Nicolette” Mary Janes feature their “toddler tech” sole and come in a variety of colors.
And I’ve also had great luck with Vincent Shoes, whose European shoes wear well and look fabulous, like their sporty Lotta style.
Of course there’s always Zappos, where a search for size 12 childrens mary janes alone yielded a whole six pages of results, including brands like Naturino which are always sturdy and stylish – look how cute these red shoes are! But sadly, don’t expect a thing in that category under $30. Unless you don’t mind the High School Musical shoes. Which, well, we do. –Kristen
