Spring showers that won’t mess with your hair

When it comes to mobiles, we always prefer the handmade, battery-free versions that can do double duty as beautiful wall decor. And I’m so happy to have discovered the selection from The Butter Flying–in fact my immediate response to the cloud mobiles was “Gorgeous!” The fluffy felt clouds hover over colorful raindrops, which artist Sylvie can design to match the color scheme of your child’s room. I would totally put the fish mobile  (made from paint chips, how cool is that?) up on the wall in my son’s room now, and he’s 9. So that says a little something...

The urban daddy diaper bag. Really, just let him have this one.

Whenever I buy a diaper bag I try to make it as gender-neutral as possible so my husband feels comfortable using it as well.  It never occurred to me to just get him his own so that I could have my cute and girlie diaper bag all to myself. Fortunately he’s all over the Urban Cool Collection of daddy diaper bags from Skooch. They’re all manly and big and tough with lots of pockets and plenty of patterns with nary a polkadot or paisley in sight. Did I say big? They are huge, so probably overkill for a quick...

Chubby baby

This hand-appliqued butterfly girls tank dress is the kind of thing you spot in a boutique and immediately need to have. It comes courtesy of the mom-run emporium Chubby Delicious who I first encountered at a Baby Loves Disco party, so you know they’ve got to be cool. They run small so a 4 is probably good on a 2 year-old if you’re going to wear it as a dress or a jumper over a white tee. But it’s also a cute little tunic over leggings or cuffed jeans. And gosh it’s fun having my daughter in black when...

Seven Smooches – I kiss you!

When we got word that there’s a company doing cool things with kidswear made of vintage feed sacks, I have to say that the terms romantic, delicate, soft and cozy didn’t exactly spring to mind. But that’s just how I would describe the beautiful handmade children’s clothes from Seven Smooches. The bloomers, of all things, are extraordinary – soft pastel patterns meticulously handcrafted and finished with six lovely mismatched buttons. This is like the ultimate indulgent baby accessory to go under your indulgent summer baby sundress. I’m also just loving the handmade girls twirly skirts and board shorts which...

Let’s go surfin’ now

I may have mentioned once or forty times that our family spends a lot of time in the pool.  Which means that we buy bathing suits and board shorts as part of the new baby layette.  Problem is, it’s not that easy to find cool swimwear sized for surfer dudes under a year old. Haiden Surf has solved that problem for pool-going families like mine with their super-cool kids’ board shorts for little guys. These big kid styles come in infant sizes as small as three months, and unlike other adult fashions that look dorky on kids, boardies are...

Shower curtains, hold the PVC

Thanks to the lovely stench of PVC shower curtains, I absolutely dread buying new ones. I’ve always sworn those things have got to be at the top of the environmentally unfriendly list. Turns out, I was right. So here’s an awesome alternative – EVA plastic shower curtains at Lavish and Lime. At just over $20, these affordable shower curtains are made without PVC, so that means no stinky toxic plastic smell and better, no chlorine gases released into the atmosphere. I’m digging the patterned “Koko” curtain shown here, or they’ve also got plain clear shower curtains, aptly named “Hitchcock.” It would be easy to love...

Buh-bye macaroni art

Craft kits are perfect for moms lacking that creativity gene, but then there are moms like me who combine both lack of creativity with an aversion to clutter. Our kids happily create, but then we wonder what to do with the (precious and unique but totally useless) results. The kids’ craft kits from The Little Experience are right up my rainy-day alley.  Not only are these craft kids an ideal way to spend an afternoon or two, I’m really impressed by all the cool stuff you can make whether your kids are 3 or 13. We (and by “we”,...

The key to an awesome Father’s Day

While every dad loves the homemade cards and pictures, we always adore services that help turn your child’s doodles into something even more special – maybe even something he can carry with him every day? Mia van Beek of Formia Design offers one-of-a-kind key ring fobs she creates from your child’s own drawing. I’m pretty sure any given dad or granddad would treasure one of these original creations, and prices are remarkably reasonable. A simple design in titanium is just $49, while more involved creations or sterling silver cost a bit more. However a father and child’s mutual delight...

Designer diaper bags get a floral pick-me-up

I was just thinking it’s been a while since I saw any fun new diaper bags to get excited over, and then CMP fave Hedvig Bourbon goes and reads my mind and creates well, some fun new diaper bags to get excited over. The trendy Brooklyn designer’s trademark Lucas stroller totes now come in two Marimekko-esque prints that are so bright and colorful and springy, I’m looking at my black patent leather number and feeling a little morose. The bag’s got all the snaps and pockets and flaps that you need, plus a dandy leather strap that hooks on...

Covet turns your laptop into your personal stylist

I have a dream: I want someone to go into my closet, take a look at what I have, and then tell me what else I need. And of course, I want suggestions that work with what I’m already wearing, and that are cool and fun, and maybe, just maybe, are on sale. Can you imagine? Well, now you can: Covet does just that for you. This new personal shopping website uses a quick photo quiz to determine your style; you choose which celebrity look is closest to your look. (I found myself choosing a lot of Lindsay Lohan,...

Daddy wants a new solar charger

When considering your options for a more eco Father’s Day (as seems to be the going trend these days), we’re liking Sustain Stores for a whole bunch of earth-friendly and guy-friendly high-tech choices. They’ve got gadgets like solar chargers and eco flashlights galore, as well as green products for the suburban warrior and his trusty sidekick, the lawn. There’s also plenty of home decor, cleaning products and beauty items you’ll have fun browsing, and whole section of products under $25. Sure, I’d probably hold off on the lavender face mask from Nature Girl as the gift that says “We...

The return of flannel

Dust off your angst-filled Sub Pop vinyl and practice your disenchanted eye roll, because flannel is back big time and you don’t have to wait until fall to get your hands on it. Junior rock star outfitters Slick Sugar have a nifty little flannel-sleeved children’s shirt that I just love. The cool thunderbird (thunderbird? Eagle? Hawk?) motif looks awesome, and the construction made to stand up to all the drum solos your little guy has in him. Sizes start at just 3-6 months but run a wee bit small. Just hope he doesn’t end up with Courtney Love for...

The best Father’s Day tees for kids. You know, the kind he’d want to see any day

While we’re not generally fans of the “my heart belongs to daddy” school of baby tees, I think we can safely agree that on Father’s Day, wrapping your daddy’s girl or boy in a soft comfy shirt that proclaims their love for the Big Guy will pretty much make morning. A few of our favorites: What dad wouldn’t want to see their child sporting a “My Dad Is My Hero” tee-shirt? We first found this one at Childish clothing last year, and it’s been so popular, the company introduced a bunch of new styles including this cool naval motif....

Oh swanky lunch tote, where have you been all my life?

The PVC-free “stoh” lunch totes from Milkdot just may be the answer to my–and your–lunch-packing wishes and hopes and dreams. They are absolutely practical for kids heading off to camp or their first full day at school in the fall (sniff, whimper) but truth be told, the design is so stylish I’d be thrilled to bring them to work myself and save a little cash on take-out lunches. Thoughtfully designed by Janet Cho, the perfectly sized interior is insulated and wipeable (and lead-free, yay) and mesh pockets help wrangle utensils, string cheese or crazy straws. But what’s really cool...

Rustic meets digital meets leather meets ohmygod I must have it

When you think leather cuffs, I hope you don’t still have that bad 80’s stud thing in your head. Because then you wouldn’t get  chance to click over and discover the incredible leather cuffs from ColinFrancis design (soon to be CuffModern). And love them. And buy many of them. These vegetable-tanned leather bracelets are digitally cut into amazing geometric patterns like squared shown here, or even more feminine flowers. Then the cuffs are finished with one of six colors of your choice, and sized to order. I love the idea of pairing them with a flowy summery dress, just...

The cloth diapering mama’s little helper

Cloth diapering obviously requires more work than disposables, and if you are new to it it can be a little daunting. It’s always great to find resources on the web and friendly people willing to help out, which is what Julie Sparrow Carson is doing with Bundle Baby Shop. She’s gathered not only excellent choices for cloth diapering, mama care, and baby carriers (like the beautiful Polkadot Papoose which we love), but they offer diaper service for those of you lucky enough to live in the Denver area. I love that they offer a half-and-half delivery service (half cloth,...

Vivesana Baby Sunscreen – When they say natural they really mean natural

With the next few months spent almost daily at the pool, my kids and I are everyday sunscreen wearers. And this summer, I hereby announce that my children will be covered in Vivesana, a 70% organic and 100% natural sunscreen that’s clearly different than anything I’ve ever used before. Carefully formulated with awesomely natural ingredients like olive oil and green tea extract and devoid of any chemicals or synthetics, Vivesana is like a fabulous body lotion that just so happens to be a 42 SPF sunscreen. It’s so gentle you can use it on little ones who aren’t technically...

Happy Accidents is deliberately awesome

The fact that Billy Jonas’ Knock Knock song has taught my kids a bunch of jokes that are actually funny is alone worth the price of his new CD, Happy Accidents. But on top of that, Happy Accidents has loads of smart, humor-full and funky, world-music folk songs that still sound fresh months after we first stuck it into our CD player. The Asheville, NC based singer (no, he’s not related to the Jonas Brothers) has a way with words and plays with them in wonderfully eclectic ways, from What Kind of Dog Are You?, a play-along song that...

Acorn Toy Shop: First Brooklyn, now the world

Well it’s about time my favorite local Brooklyn toy store, Acorn toys, went digital. Not that I was complaining before, mind you, but now everyone I know can check out the gorgeous selection of handmade toys and other special gifts for kids. And maybe get some for us? Look around and you’ll see great children’s room decor, wonderful stuffed animals, wooden toys for pretend play, multicultural Waldorf dolls, and even accessories like the fantastic (if pricey) silver boots from Chickpea Kid that I fell in love with two years ago and can never seem to find. I’m also totally...
