Perfect gifts for scarfaholics. Or anyone, really.

First I was excited about boot weather. But now that I’m firmly settled into my kickers, I’m ready for the next stage — scarf weather. Even though I’ve got a killer line-up waiting in my closet, like any good scarfaholic, I always need just one more. Right now, my neck is pining for the plume scarf by multi-talented artist and CMP favorite Alena Hennessy. Her new line of organic scarves are completely green — as in handmade of organic cotton and printed locally with earth-friendly inks. But it’s the designs that closed the deal for me. I adore the...

Cute clothes patterned to catch your baby’s eye

Having just welcomed a new baby boy into our fold (well, it feels like “just”–how did we already high five the seven-month marker?), I’m constantly aware of how many onesies, sleepers, and rompers a baby can inherit. Bags. And bags. And bags of cute baby clothes. But in looking through all of these (well-loved, so appreciated, and totally adorable! Mean it!) clothes, I can tell you that there isn’t even one little shirt among them that was made for the purpose of stimulating infants’ vision. I can also tell you that I never really thought that one might exist. Or...

Gluten-free gourmet cookie mix for those of us who’d given up on cookies

I’ve been gluten-free for coming up on a couple of years, now, and while I’ve learned to bake a few essentials, I’ve mostly given up on cookies. Because gluten-free cookies–by and large–suck. And I love to bake, but I’m certainly not going to spend hundreds of dollars on specialty flours and xantham gum and stuff. So when my package of Purely Elizabeth cookie mix arrived, promising gluten-free, vegan, organic goodness… I was already imagining exactly how “delicious” that would be (hint: not very). Sure, the ingredient list is impressive (including my new favorite superfood, chia seeds), but… gluten-free cookies...

Know what your school needs? A bar.

Could your local school use a salad bar? Because I sure know that ours could. Well, believe it or not, you can possibly get one –free– thanks to a grant by the Salad Bar Project. But you need to hurry. Chef Ann Cooper, Whole Foods, and TheLunchBox.org are spearheading an ambitious effort to bring a salad bar to every school in America, a cost-efficient, easy way to improve overall nutrition in a world where Pizza Day is one of the healthier choices of our school menus. You’ve got until November 15 (that’s tomorrow!) to apply for a grant to...

The coolest photo calendars get you ready for 2011 (gulp)

Every year, I make my Mother-in-Law a calendar with photos of the kids and she ooos and ahhhs over it as any good grandmother would. But, after doing this for the past ten years, I am feeling a little ho-hum about the whole thing and wonder if the calendar has become the equivalent of the gift card: A great practical gift but not very exciting.  Leave it to cool custom card company Minted to make me rethink my annual gift as anything but ho-hum with a designy version that is worthy of anyone on my list, including me.  [Don’t...

The temperature is dropping, and that means I must face my daily terror: Five Minutes of Goosebumps. Teething rocks

Ok so maybe teething doesn’t really rock. In fact, it can be pretty painful for all parties involved. I recall more than my share of sleepless nights when my son’s teeth were coming in. Not fun. But maybe the teethers can be? I only wish I had known about this solid organic wood guitar teether from perennial CMP favorite, Little Alouette. The Gibson-shaped teether is made from locally-sourced Ohio hardwoods. The finish is as smooth as your baby’s bottom and you can feel safe knowing that any treatment on the wood is only certified organic flaxseed oil. I am...

It’s a card. That’s a gift.

I love the idea of giving out a little something more than a holiday card to my friends and family. Of course, I wish I could give everyone a gift, but since money doesn’t grow on trees, here’s another idea.[don’t miss a great offer after the jump] The WOOD Holiday Greeting Cards at Night Owl Paper Goods are adorable as a step up from a card but maybe not quite a gift. Made from eco-friendly birch wood, they have a personalized image on one side, and a calendar on the other. That way family and friends can remember you...

Taste the (healthy!) rainbow

The latest rage at our house isn’t candy. Or even the colorful vegetables that might end up spit-splattered across your blouse if baby isn’t into beets. No, this exciting new pick is healthy, delicious, beautiful, and handy. And, honestly, kinda half candy and half vegetable, as far as baby is concerned. [don’t miss a great giveaway after the jump!] The new Organic Super Puffs by Plum Organics (read all about them here) may be the only reason my two-year old knows his colors. Made from USDA-certified organic ingredients, they include real fruits, veggies, and whole grains with no wheat...

I just wrote to say I love you

I don’t know about you, but I’m only a few months into school lunch-making and I’m running out with ideas to keep it interesting. Mostly for me. I try to create little surprises in my daughter’s lunchbox every day, from slicing her sandwich in different shapes, to tucking in a little sticky note with a silly drawing. A couple of companies are doing some cool stuff with lunchbox notes, for those mornings you (or really, I) just don’t the creativity in me. Or, you just want to do something a little more special on extra-special spelling test/school photo/soccer game...

Stella McCartney new kids’ collection. Excuse me while I wipe the drool marks off my screen.

I’ve been smitten with Stella McCartney’s exclusive clothing line for the Gap for two seasons in a row, so when I heard she launched a new collection of her very own, I just had to check it out. And while this collection is priced higher than her Gap goodies, it’s not nearly as much as I’d expect for such a major designer. In other words, it’s definitely worth a look, a few clicks, and maybe even a credit card swipe or two. [don’t miss some fabulous, fashionable looks after the jump] After perusing both the boy and girl looks...

Caspar Babypants’ new CD is a little bit of kindie nirvana

In my last review of a Caspar Babypants CD, I mentioned that Weird Al Yankovic had called him “one of the few children’s recording artists I can listen to without wanting to stab myself in the eyes,” which is my single favorite endorsement ever. But if you need another reason why Caspar Babypants is the bomb-diggity, you’ve gotta hear track # 11 on his latest release which has none other than a member of Nirvana strumming the familiar bass line. {don’t miss a cool giveaway after the jump!} Of course one song–even one with Krist Novoselic–does not a CD...

We adore this story on Cool Hunting about Portland’s last vintage shop – now mobile and operating out of a bus MomTrends details their own top Hanukkah picks for kids. Finally! An affordable stroller that makes you feel trendy too

I remember when my first child was born. My husband and I agonized over what kind of stroller we should get. We were initially quite pleased with our trendy choice, but if we knew then what we know now, we certainly wouldn’t have bought the one we did. It was expensive, it was big, and it took up pretty much all of our tiny one-bedroom apartment. A few years later, I’m still a sucker for style when it comes to baby gear. But with baby number three on the way, I know a thing or two about what I’m...

Picture-perfect custom holiday cards. Hold the picture.

Three cute kids? Check.  Three cute kids who will sit still for holiday photo? Who will not blink, grimace, scratch, look away, hunch, scowl or stick out their tongue for said photo?  Yeah, not a check.  Good thing I’ve found a way to preserve their cuteness for all to see without saying Cheese! for the gazillionth time. Olliegraphic, that purveyor of the super-cute that we’ve loved for oh-so-long, has us smitten again with their Customizable Holiday Greeting Cards for 1, 2, 3 or even more kids. And when we say customizable, we don’t just mean hair color and gender....

Three cheers for the red, white and gently used

This Veteran’s Day, we’d like to not only remember the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country, but also that little boy over there who is riding his bike with grape jelly on his shirt. And there is his sister, hula-hooping in the front yard.  Right now there are thousands of military families stationed all over the globe, many with young, growing-like-a-weed children. I can only imagine how difficult clothes shopping is from foreign bases, with selections that probably don’t mirror what I get in my local mall. So, we are thrilled that one...
