Month: December 2010

It’s glove season. Which means, lost glove season.

My kids lose scarves and gloves like uh…well, like kids lose scarves and gloves. While I covet so many high end handmade options, I know I take quite a risk knowing that two mittens may head out the door in the morning, and only one will return home. So I’m happy to have learned about a new site that offers adorable, affordable cold weather accessories for kids 2 to 12. [don’t miss a special offer and a big giveaway after the jump!] Dochi is run by a NYC mom who also gets the value thing, and it’s evident in...

Wondering what to do with your spare change? How about save some animals.

Before I was a Mom, what seems like a lifetime ago (oh, a whole four years back), I worked for the Audubon Society. It was thrilling to be involved in a community that was so passionate about conservation and protecting the wildlife we share the planet with and now I’m devoted to passing those values onto my own kids.. I’m pleased to hear that there’s a great new program to help kids get involved with national conservation in a very easy way.  Pennies for the Planet, created by The National Audubon Society in alliance with Toyota, is a program...

Jingle Bells for Jennic

One of the coolest things about working with so many small business owners is that we really get to know their personal stories of talent, innovation, and dedication. We’re always amazed by their strength and perseverance. Small business ownership is not for wimps, yo. We discovered KangarooBoo during the holidays three years ago, and we’ve been smitten ever since. Not only does owner and mom Jennic Law carry a fabulous assortment of our favorite children’s toys and gear, but she has a most incredible personal story of overcoming cancer and giving back a portion of every sale to children’s...

Gourmet lollipops ain’t no Dum-Dums.

Perhaps you’ve poked around our holiday gift guide this year and come across the category called Gifts Under $15 That Don’t Seem Cheap at All. If so, you very likely spotted the gourmet lollipops. You know the ones. The ones that call to you in your sleep whispering a million reasons good reasons to buy them. Let me just say: Do it. How else can you indulge in the likes of seasonal flavors like Peppermint lollipops or Eggnog Latte lollipops made with real espresso? How else might you delight some lucky child waking up to a stocking full of,...

Sandra Boynton – Udderly amazing

To say that Sandra Boynton is my favorite children’s author is an understatement, (with deep props to Dr. Seuss). But truly, for the first few years of my son’s life her chunky children’s books were a constant. Her writing is fun, bouncy and the pictures. Oh, the pictures. [don’t miss a FABULOUS $400 giveaway after the jump! Seriously, it’s a good one…] So squeeze me, because she has just released a new book called Amazing Cows, an ode to all things bovine. I am going to savor all 96 colorful pages of cowtastic jokes, poems, stories, games and more....

The Coolest TV Moms and the fashion they’ve inspired – Part 1, The 1950’s and 1960’s

We love TV. Love TV! No apologies here for our pop culture addiction. It seems so far back that TV moms were just you know…funny. And not because they got Botox live in front of cameras. (Or maybe we’re watching too much Bravo?) So we are happy to present a three-part series on our favorite TV moms through the ages, and the fab fashion they inspired, sponsored by Xfinity from Comcast which helps you keep up with your favorite entertainment. 1950s: LUCY RICARDO Sorry Donna Reed, you’ve got no chance against Lucy Ricardo, who might just be the best...

Bid, borrow or swap your way to a fabulous wardrobe

If eBay, Net-a-Porter, Rent the Runway and Gilt Groupe (all of my favorite shopping websites) had a baby, their progeny would look like I-ELLA.com. Launched by a fashion-obsessed entrepreneur in New York, I-ELLA weaves enough elements into the shopping experience to make my head spin (in a really good way). Here’s the gist. I-ELLA translates the social aspect of shopping with friends to the online setting by letting you “share” your closet with the rest of the invitation-only community, which includes celebs, models and assorted fashionistas. Once you post your new or gently worn goods on the site for...

A gift for you Television Without Pity wannabe writers

I’m always looking for fun little gifts for hip friends–you know, the kind of under $15 thing that makes a big impression when you wrap it beautifully and present with love, but isn’t necessarily the Hope Diamond. We’ve got a whole category of them in our holiday gift guide this year, but now there’s one more to add to the list.  I am simply in love with these pop culture pencils that are inscribed with writing prompts for your favorite blogger–or simply a kindred nod of irony to your best friend who also loves Alec Baldwin. With idea starters...

Alphabet City

We’re kind of in love with Joanne Dugan around here. She’s an amazingly prolific photographer, with her work in about a zillion ads, the awesome Taxi Driver Wisdom book, and most importantly to us, a magical series of children’s books: ABC NYC and 123 NYC, which incorporate evocative numbers and letters photographed around New York City. Well now she’s onto her next project, which let you take those very letters out of the pages and onto your kids’ walls. While the neon B once stood for bagel, as a wall decal it can stand for baby or Braden or...

Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker on PBS

One of my all time favorite holiday shows is the Nutcracker Ballet, but I didn’t imagined I would get tickets to see it with my toddler for quite a long time–like, ten years, at least. Performances are expensive in New York! Which is one of the reasons that Cool Mom Picks has been fans of the mom-created Prima Princessa series of dance videos, and especially Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. Well good news: Now it’s free. Prima Princessa Ballerina will be airing on PBS this December so set your DVRs and get ready to be charmed. It tells the...
