Summer brights for summer babies

I’ve had a heart for the adorably luxe baby clothes from LA’s PAIGELAUREN baby since I found them earlier this year. The sweet pastels and softer than soft cottons are exactly the kind of shower gift that steals the stage. But now I’m excited to see the label branching out a bit with a new summer collection. The trademark dreamy pastels are giving way to brighter neutrals in their summer collection of baby clothes, with names like kelp, midstream and sol – that’s green, bright blue, and lemon yellow for us English speakers. Everything from the bodysuits and rompers...

T is for Twilight – Squeeeeeeeee!

If you’ve been living under a rock, you might not know that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is premiering today. Now, I humbly admit that I’ve yet to get sucked into the Twilight series, however, that doesn’t mean I don’t get the obsession with vampires or with Robert Pattinson. Hello! So we couldn’t help but share this super cool Twilight Alphabet poster spotted on Etsy that features original letters and artwork all inspired by the movies, printed on heavy white stock and ready for framing. I’m guessing any Twi-fan would go nuts for this, regardless of age. Heck, you could...

Three cheers for the red, white, blue and handmade. Or is that four cheers.

Call me sappy but I love the idea of getting all festive for the Fourth of July. And I really love the idea of doing it in a way that doesn’t involve my children blowing something up. So sign me up for giant watermelon slices, sparklers on the cupcakes, and this sweet handmade July 4 fabric garland from Sparkle Power. As far as 4th of July decorations go, I just love the combination of pretty fabrics, and how the dots, flowers and plaids stay with the traditional flag palate, but make everything just a little more modern and fresh....

Easy Summer Travel Week pick: SuperGoop Swipes

Unless your family summer plans involve hibernating in the local million-plex theater and surviving on popcorn and Twizzlers, you can be assured of one thing: There will be sun. Which means we mamas can’t leave home without packing plenty of sunscreen. But since I am still skittish about putting anything white and liquidy in my checked baggage after the Great Moisturizer Explosion of ’94, I’m pleased to see that Doctor T’s SuperGoop! has created a new sunscreen application that should set my mind at ease: SuperGoop! Swipes. Much like a package of diaper wipes, SuperGoop! Swipes are little towelettes...

This birthday, give your prince or princess the royal treatment

Edited to add: Unfortunately, Kate Landers Events no longer exists. Why settle for paper plates with generic movie princesses on them when you can actually have a party fit for a princess, complete with a hand-made felt crown and personalized party pouches? These are just some of the gorgeous goodies I discovered at Kate Landers Events. Kate’s passion is creating charming, good old-fashion, sophisticated parties and accessories. Nearly all her items are specially made, and look it. From a personalized hand-painted plate to hand-stitched invitations, no one will mistake your party stuff as having come from a mega-store. Obviously...

Easy Summer Travel Week pick: Phil & Teds Metoo travel high chair

One of the greatest joys of travel is not having to cook, do dishes or feel the slightest bit insulted when one of my kids pushes something off their plate. Yes, I do love eating out, though I know all too well what can happen when I arrive at some funky little eatery for lunch and the few kids’ high chairs are already in use: Unrestrained toddler mayhem. [see the giveaway after the jump] Thankfully, BYOHC, or bring-your-own-high-chair, isn’t as crazy as it sounds, especially if you check out the Phil & Teds Metoo travel high chair. It’s the...

Clothes for your little baby Buddha

Come on, you know your little man fits the bill. Chubby cheeks, laughing eyes, and a perfectly round Buddha belly. Wouldn’t he look utterly delicious in a kimono? A masculine (but snuggly) kimono? [see our giveaway after the jump!] We’ve always loved Noko baby clothing for girls but we’re thrilled that they’re now offering clothes for boys in 100% pima cotton prints and solids inspired by tenugui, a traditional Japanese fabric that draws on the diverse patterns and colors in nature. But more importantly, these boy clothes are cute, soft, and definitely built to last.   You know how...

A poster that’s fabulous from A to Z

I have a thing for great alphabet posters, as you frequent Cool Mom Picks readers probably know by now. I suppose there’s no greater joy to a writer than watching her child find a love for letters and words, and surrounding those babies with them early can’t hurt.  Sol Linero’s fantastic ABC poster is making me so happy right now as little 150 pixel wide image on my screen, so I can only imagine how I’d feel owning it in a full 50×70 centimeters.  The mid-century inspired color palette is magical, and I just love the graphic imagery, from...

This is how to wear a monogram

I’m definitely a huge fan of big, bold jewelry, but when it comes to the more sentimental pieces for myself and really, gifts for others, I tend to like the simpler designs. Like the lovely monogrammed pendant from Three Sisters Jewelry which would make the perfect gift for that special recent graduate — well, other than paying off her student loans. The classic three-letter monogram charm, handstamped in sterling silver, hangs from a lovely vintage silver chain and is handcrafted by two-time cancer survivor (whoo!) and mom Zoe Mohler. Of course, if you’re looking for a little more bling, you’ll want...

A little slice of baby shower heaven

Let’s face it: no one’s ever going to say, “Whoopee, a cello bag of Jordan almonds!” It’s just not in our DNA. And yet we feel the primal call to give cutesy favors out at at baby showers. ( I once painted twelve identical paintings in one night because I wanted my dear friend to feel super-showered, and I couldn’t think of anything fabulous enough.) The good news is that when you disguise your favors as delicious slices of chocolate cake or wedges of cheese, no one’s going to care what’s inside of them. These paper pastries by imeondesign...

Canvas bags aren’t just for the beach

I reluctantly retired my favorite brown leather handbag for the summer and decided to give canvas a try. And let’s just say, I’m going to have a hard time going back once it starts to get cold again. Indeed this adorable houndstooth bag from Quote still features a bit of leather in the straps and drawstring. But it takes the idea of a canvas bag–which I admit I almost always associate with a more casual, plain beachy tote–to a whole new level. This extremely well-crafted handmade bag features a bright yellow lined interior with a zipper pocket and a...

The night light gets a soft, cuddly makeover

The night light is an essential component of the bedtime routine around my place, but no matter what method we employ, which lately has been our hallway light, it never seems to satisfy the kids’ need for light right next to them. That’s why I’m intrigued by the Chuchi from Banana Design Lab, a soft plush toy that reminds of that cute glow worm toy from back in the day. (Remember those?) With the squeeze of Chuchi’s soft hand, it sends off a light glow that’s perfect for reassuring those monster-averse kiddos after the lights go out, or for gently...

Whole Foods makes sure organic body products actually are

When it comes to healthy, sustainable food, the broccoli’s out of the bag, thanks to movies like Food, Inc. and books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma. So now we all join CSAs and hunt for the least bruised organic apples — and then we come home and just slap on lotions and potions without nearly as much thought about their ingredients or origins. Maybe it’s time to start focusing some of that scrutiny we apply to the food we put in our bodies on the bath and beauty products that we put on our bodies. Now, Whole Foods is doing...

Boys tees just keep getting cooler

As a mom of a boy, I know how challenging it can be to find cool shirts that aren’t drenched in licensed characters. Sure, I love super heroes as much as the next person, but even spider man wears real clothes when he’s off duty. So, I’m so glad I was introduced to the Dogwood boy’s t-shirts, many of which are found at hip boutique and past CMP fave Little Urbanites. The Ford Mustang tee (pictured) is definitely a stand-out, but I’m also digging the Baseball shirt, which is a nice change from the official team shirts and jerseys...

Q is for quirky, quality, and quintessentially eco-safe furniture

If you like pretty things with cool names and an eco-friendly stance, you’re going to love the gorgeous furniture in the new Studio Line, by CMP favorite Q Collection. Their 3-in-1 crib holds a dear place in our hearts, but for now, forget about their kiddie stuff. We’re focusing on the beautiful, chic, and just-different-enough-to-be-cool furniture in their brand new adult line. You can snuggle up on the Sweet Cheeks Sofa or rock baby to sleep in the Ask Me Alberto Glider shown here. But names alone aren’t enough to inspire major furniture purchases. We must also consider style,...

Babies deserve a little Green Toy action too

We first fell in love with Green Toys way back in the day of the lead paint recalls (aw, remember those fun days?) and knew they were onto something fabulous. Well sure enough, their line has expanded beautifully since then and today they’re doing some super cool things for the littlest people in our families–who we’d rather not be gnawing on cadmium in their spare time. The new line, aptly called My First Green Toys, includes classic baby toys like a baby stacker cleverly designed to eliminate that center post, and building blocks billed as the world’s first environmentally...
