Moop, there it is!

In the summer, I tend to let my handbags go a little more casual and a little less structured. Messenger bags can do the trick, but frankly, I don’t want to look like a messenger. [don’t miss the giveaway after the jump!] That’s where Moop comes in. Their meticulously handmade line of bags includes a handmade messenger bag that’s the right balance of functional and understated style for women who don’t like to be too fussy with their handbags. It’s great for the gym or as an easy diaper tote, and the heavyweight organic cotton easily takes you into...

Doughnuts just for babies. Homer Simpson approves.

When I was pregnant with my first daughter, now six, rattles that were actually cute, functional, and not made completely of plastic were just starting to make it onto the scene. Well it seems that now cuteness and a bit of hilarity abounds at every shake, like with these new Yellow Label doughnut rattles. We’ve long admired the funny and creative minds behind Yellow Label Kids since back when we drooled over their sushi rattles. And so not surprisingly, the new doughnut rattles are a hit with us too. Modeled after their popular pretend donut toys, these fair trade hand crocheted rattles transitions from fantastic...

Snoopy Sno-Cone Makers! Remember those?

Like all children of the 70’s, I have fond memories of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and that Evil Knievel motorcycle that never ever jumped the ramp like it did on the commercial. I also pine for my old Snoopy Sno-Cone maker, which  pretty much guaranteed that any hot day could become a block party with all the neighborhood kids. As it turns out, that very Snoopy Sno Cone machine is still alive, kicking, and less than $20 at Back to Basics Toys— a store all of us nostalgic for our old playthings should bookmark. [edited to add :they’re...

The pros and cons of 6 top online coupon sites

As most of us frugal online shoppers know by now, you don’t buy something without first checking to see if there’s a coupon code and a way to get it cheaper. It’s why we work really hard to secure exclusive codes for our readers here. Well, you should also know that when I’m not here at Cool Mom Picks, I’m busy finding the best deals and coupon codes to share over on my frugal-minded site, Want Not. It’s really the only site you need for coupons and deals if I do say so. In fact, it’s the only one...

I’m going vegan for marshmallows

You might think that I’m obsessing about marshmallows because I’m pregnant. I mean, c’mon, marshmallows? Aren’t there like 4000 other yummy sweets that one might pick over those things people stick in S’mores or on top of hot chocolate? But let me just say that my obsession with the tasty vegan marshmallows from Sweet and Sara started waaaay before this pregnancy. Now I just have an excuse to eat the entire container. These ridiculously delicious marshmallows are the brain child of 18-year vegan Sara Sohn, who was convinced that she could create a vegan marshmallow, and boy did she....

Hip tees for boys–or is that hip hop tees for boys.

Looking around the mega stores I sometimes think we’re supposed to be dressing our boys like country club members or just plain generically. Well hooray for dads Manny Cabrera and Pedro Tuma, and their passion to dress their boys in clothes that represented their own personal style–hip hop and street wear. [don’t miss an awesome giveaway, and a great offer, after the jump] Well, Bumps & Bruises clothing line to the rescue. Manny and Pedro had years of experience in t-shirt design before they became dads, but spotting a void in the cool boys wear arena they took matters...

A girls’ guide to middle school mojo

We’re heading into our second year of middle school, here, and it’s been… interesting. It’s definitely a whole different ballgame than elementary school, particularly for girls, who tend to morph into social piranhas pretty early. Is your little darling feeling some trepidation about this new phase? No sweat! The creators of Girls’ Life magazine teamed up with Scholastic, and their Ultimate Guide to Surviving Middle School hits just the right notes in making junior high sound like a brave new adventure. It’s positive and energetic without veering into chirpy, and discusses everything from making new friends, to keeping your...

Plan Toys – On super sale now at Amazon.com

We’re huge fans of Plan Toys around here, and for good reason. These sturdy, eco-friendly and battery-free wooden toys are built to last. And not surprisingly, they’re usually priced as such–something I’m more than willing to pay so as not to have to buy another one in two days after my kids have broken it. However, right now you can snag some great deals on Plan Toys at Amazon.com. With a truck obsessed son, I headed straight for the construction vehicles, like the excavator¬†that’s currently 42% off or the cute bulldozer toy (pictured) at 36% off–both of which are...

Cool aunts deserve some lovin’ too

The adorable personalized baby onesies from Mitetees are some of our favorite baby shower gifts around here, and they’ve impressed us again, this time with their brand new line of onesies just for the cool aunts of the world. [don’t miss the giveaway and special offer after the jump!] Considering how great my sister-in-law is with my kids, I know she’d be tickled to see my new baby in one of these three options, all of which include your favorite Aunt’s name displayed on a soft, baby onesie. Like the one shown here, “My Auntie ___ Rocks.” And of course...

Here are some things we’ve liked reading around the web this hot July week. We hope you will too. Five popsicle recipes at Ohdeedoh. Yum. Mommy Poppins gives us the scoop (get it?) on five great ice cream shops in New York City including editor Liz’s neighborhood favorite, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. If you’ve checked out the other links then...

3D movies now (duh) more for kids

You’d think it would stand to reason that companies would understand that most of the movie-goers to animated 3D movies are, you know, kids. And yet, until last month, any cinema showing a RealD 3D movie offered just one (ginormous) size of 3D glasses for your viewing pleasure. But now it’s kind of cool that you can hit the movies and leave the cries of Mommy, they’re too big, they keep falling! behind; RealD now offers kid-sized specs for the little ones. They come in the same sanitary single-pair wrapping as their adult-sized counterparts, but are sized to be...

Light up the night

It’s hard to imagine right now — as the kids run around outside in pure daylight until well past 8:00 — that the days are getting shorter, again. And before we know it, we’ll be back to those early mornings of heading out to school when it’s still dark out. Alas. Fortunately, thanks to these cool reflectors from Firefly, you can easily make sure your kiddo is plenty visible and feed their need for cool. There’s tons of different options, each reflector handily masquerading as a bit of standard kid-bling to hang on a backpack or jacket zipper pull....

Like an audio scrapbook of awesomeness

Ever been the person in charge of a group gift, and discovered that special circle of purgatory that involves trying to contact large numbers of people and keep track of who’s done what and who still needs to contribute? Yeah. Not fun. And then there’s the icing on the cake, which is deciding whose names to put on the finished product even if not everyone participated. Well, SpeakSake offers a unique and very personal way to make a gift for one from many say, for a retiring teacher, Grandma’s 90th birthday, or a great germ-free way for everyone to...

Modern children’s furniture for modern tight budgets

There’s a lot of adorable children’s furniture out there, but the big problem is the cost. At least for the stuff I tend to like, which is vibrant and modern and doesn’t have the word Shaker anywhere near it. Then I discovered the affordable custom children’s furniture from Jesse Dirk and wish I had found her sooner. This Illinois woodworker makes beautiful modern children’s furniture to order, at truly great prices. You can have the wood grain stained to your specs, or even go with a blackboard top shown here plus two chairs, all for $195, which is amazing....

Breaking news – CPSC votes to ban sale of all drop side cribs

With the recent slew of crib recalls, and now Pottery Barn Kids voluntarily recalling 82,000 drop side cribs today, it seems that the CPSC has had enough, so much so that they voted unanimously to ban the sale of drop side cribs in the United States. The issue with drop-side cribs is not a new one, mostly due to poorly constructed and installed sides on specific brands and models coming loose and babies getting dangerously and sometimes fatally trapped. However, this new ban now applies to all brands selling this type of crib. So, once again, check your cribs,...

Living on a Shoestring? Not such a bad thing.

My biggest complaint about fashion magazines, besides the perfume samples, is… well, the perfume samples. But I also hate it when my eyes fall in love with cuteness before hitting the huge price tag printed below. Shoestring Magazine solves both problems: It’s online, and therefore not smelly, and it is devoted to, and I quote, “resourcefulness, the look for less, and attainable, affordable luxuries.” Sound good? Well, it is. Shoestring has well-written and fashion savvy articles on nearly all the topics that I want to hear about– from lifestyle to DIY to Kids & Pets, which, grouped together, cracks...

Starting babies on organics early

I still remember my daughter’s first “friend” – a garish stroller toy that we dubbed Guy the Giraffe pronounced the French way, Gee, because it was the one sound my three month-old made. Oh how she loved that thing. And sucked its antlers. Every chance she got. If MiYim had been making their adorable organic stroller toys back then, I’d have traded in Guy in a second. Or at least found him some company. There’s an adorable bumblebee (shown) with equally suckable antennae; plus a ladybug and caterpillar, all made in subtle, subdued shades of organic cotton. There’s even...

Popsicles for the wall

With the temperature finally reaching holy mama, it’s hot out there–and that’s the technical term–I love looking at artwork that makes it somehow feel cooler inside. The popsicle print from LA’s Mint Buttercup is giving me goosebumps, with a combination of cool color palate and striking graphic of a double popsicle. It would look pretty cool in a summer house, but knowing my kids, they’d be happy to look at it year round. And for just $12, I’d be happy to buy it for them, as opposed to the HFCS-laden stuff from the ice cream truck. –Liz Find artwork...

Spotting bargains across the pond

Most of the online shopping I do at UK shops is of the window variety. As in, browsing only, do not pass go, do not add to my cart, do not pay international shipping. Click on sale, sort by price, and you’ll find all sorts of goodies to love from labels like Imps + Elves, No Added Sugar, Diesel...
