Happy 5th Birthday, Cool Mom Picks! (And prizes!)

KRISTEN: Back in early 2006, a few months after I started blogging, I thought it might be fun to start another blog that highlighted the cool, handmade goodies I found so many online moms making and selling to help keep their households afloat. It’ll be cheeky! And fun to read! And it’ll save moms time! And it’s called ‘Cool Mom Sh*t, I said in an email to a few of my newfound online friends and writers I admired.

Liz emailed me back with a few ideas for the blog and asked if I wanted a partner. Then she told me to change the name.

And that’s how Cool Mom Picks was born.

My first post was as sloppy as it was heartfelt and authentic, and it went live 5 years ago today. There were no thoughts of sponsors. Or Real Simple. Or appearances on NBC’s Today Show. To us, it was just a fun little diversion, and a way to help make moms’ lives a little easier and a little more fabulous.

Wonderfully enough, it’s still all of those things.

LIZ: I still remember telling a professional colleague about this blog we were going to start. I explained how much I adored my partner and how much fun it would be. His response: What are you crazy? You haven’t even met her yet! Why would you do that? Are you getting paid for it?

My response: Um…no? I just think it sounds fun.

It’s been a crazy wonderful journey, and I’d be hard-pressed to name the best part. I love getting to know so many incredible artists and small business owners. I love walking the aisles of trade shows and sneak peaks at so many beautiful things that will make parents happy. I love that we opened comments on posts and started a Facebook Page and a Twitter Account to give voice (and sometimes face!) to our incredible community of readers. But most of all, I’ve loved working with the most wonderful partner, and the most dedicated, thoughtful, talented team of contributors that anyone could ask for. We couldn’t do it without them.

SO…On this, our fifth birthday, and our 4000-something post (holy…!) we wanted nothing more than to celebrate you. The amazing readers who make this all so fun for us every day.

That’s why we’ve put together a week’s worth of phenomenal ones, filled with some of our favorite things–with a hat tip to La Oprah. No, no Lexuses; we’ll save that for when we turn ten. (Ha.)     I’ve been following Cool Mom Picks for about 3 years now, which is about how long I’ve been a Cool Mom! 🙂 A friend recommended the blog and I’ve enjoyed hearing about the cutest and coolest gadgets, gifts and more.     As a Mom of a hip little boy (if I do say so myself), I am always on the hunt for fun boy’s clothing. It is becoming more readily available, but I love finding out about new to me websites, especially when there is a sale or promo.     I love these tooth fairy pillows. I purchased one for each of my daughters. My oldest just lost her first tooth last week and I broke it out and she loved it. The tooth was completely lost (in before dinner, out after dinner and we weren’t going to search far), but she wrote a teeny tiny note to the fairy to put in the pocket. “I don’t no where my tooth is.” The tooth fairy understood.     How hard was it to pick my fave?? I love all the cool boy stuff you find; I only have two boys, at opposite ends of the age spectrum (12yo and 14mos.) but it’s so hard to find cute non-preppy stuff (I’m so not into suspenders and sweater vests) and I love that you turned me on to several different cute boys’ clothes designers. Also the stroller accessories, and the cool wooden toys, and I love the eco-friendly stuff you find all the time.     This is one of my favorite posts! I get discouraged when shopping at Toys R Us and similar stores… I long for more unique toys that encourage a child to use their imagination, instead of being so automated that they almost play with themselves! My baby girl is almost 7 months, so our toy shopping has been limited, but I plan to get most of her goodies at craft shows, the farmers market, or Etsy!

I turn to you every year for your Chinese New Year picks – this is a holiday often overlooked in our country, but highly celebrated in my family (we call it “Tet” since my daughter is Vietnamese).     I’ve been reading this blog since becoming a mom in 2009, and love the products and suggestions. The coolest moms on the block even had an email question from me about a baptism gift…so I am a loyal fan. But the post that has saved me the most money was in the best of 2010 technology and apps – the Price Blink add-on for Firefox! It is amazing and will find the best price on the web for anything for you or your little one!

    My favorite has been the one about saving handmade items. My mom, my mother-in-law, and myself are all crafters and it’s really upsetting that we would be lumped into the same category as corporations who decide to cut corners and only care about money as opposed to our children’s safety.

    my son is 5.5, and i too discovered the blog, pretty new then, just as i was sort of re-examining myself in my new-mom role – its like we’ve “grown” together! the site is a must-check everyday as its smartly-written, has amazing variety, and has kept me “in the know” about so much, well, cool stuff. one of my favorite things has been the friday roundup posts of “Web coolness.” one can really get time/life sucked away via the internet. i’ve tried really hard, especially in the last year or so with 2 kids now, to keep things simple and not fall into the trap of endlessly surfing and reading and discovering online. its fun, but it does take me away from actually living sometimes! and because i’ve grown to love and trust your editorial eyes, i super appreciate a quick hit list/summary of some other stuff out there worth checking out. this friday roundup featured the family manifesto via Alpha Mom – never would have crossed my plate otherwise, and it was truly an inspiration!

    I personally loved the “Better Than Duct Tape” post about the Drop Stop. I have a friend whose perspective is that we should “simply” teach the toddler that their behavior is unacceptable as opposed to buying some new gadget that just made things easier on the mom! I snubbed that craziness and invested in a few of these Drop Stops and life was good again. Icing on the cake? When that friend found herself at her wits end because her second would not stop tossing his sippy, I passed down all my Drop Stops to her. If I’m being honest, that’s the REAL reason I love this Cool Mom Pick so much!

    My favorite CMP feature is the Baby Shower List! Before I had a baby it helped me to find fun gift ideas for friends and family. Now that I am a mom too, I have found lots of thing my daughter adores!

    If I hadn’t read CMP, I would have never learned about See Kai Run, which were my daughter’s favorites shoes until she outgrew their sizes. LOVE them. I have more favorites, of course, but that one sticks out because I am excited about having another kid to outfit with SKR shoes.

    I loved this post because we are huge on getting the plastic out of the playroom(and our whole house)- and are quite close! We buy some big box wooden toys and things, but truly delight in purchasing as many handmade items as possible from small work at home moms. Our play food is all hand knit or crocheted. Even the cat likes it! ;0)

I had been struggling with baby food and my local options and Jack’s was exactly what I was looking for.     I came across this article while reading up on diaper bags, and it immediately captured my attention. You see, I subscribed to Cool Mom Picks a while ago even though I’m not a mom yet…Nor am I expecting.

    I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in August, and I’m currently in the process of getting my blood glucose numbers down into the normal range so I can get the go-ahead to start a family and have a safe, healthy pregnancy and baby. In the meanwhile, I’ve kept myself busy researching all things baby-related, just so I can get ahead of the learning curve…hopefully!

    I love this article because this little pack would be a life-saver for me. I have to carry so much stuff (blood sugar meter, fast-acting glucose tablets, medical i.d., etc.) whatever I’m doing, but particularly when I’m exercising. I’ve been looking for something I wouldn’t have to actually carry for a while now, to no avail. Then I came across this article, and the rest is history!

    Not only will it come in handy now; it will be super, super helpful once I do have a little bundle of joy of my own down the road. Not having to carry around all of my diabetes-related supplies will free up my bag space (and my hands) for the other important stuff…and for loving on my happy, healthy baby that I’ll have worked so long and hard to safely bring into the world.

    I so much enjoy checking out your awesome emails that come to me. There are always phenominal stuff that is not of the ORDINARY. I have feel head over heels with some of your items you have blogged about, one of my favorites is the awesome bandaids that made any boo boo feel instantly better from Cynthia Rowley, they are the next best thing to a RockStar energy drink. My daughter thought her mom was the best thing that walked the earth when I gave those to her. She began using them at first just to look pretty and cool and once they were gone she realized that even though they are cool looking that she needed to only use them when she had a Boo Boo. She also started putting them under her eye to look cool like her older brother does when he plays football. She and I love them….thanks for sharing

    I was never a big fan of the photo cards as cards to send to friends and family for holidays. I just felt as though it wasn’t personal and honestly I didn’t like any of the options a lot of the card companies offered. That was until I saw your post about Paper Culture. Love them! I remember this one because it was the first thing from CMP that I didn’t just drool over but actually ordered. The scones were delicious and Casey was lovely to deal with.

    Sadly, CMP has outlasted the Kitchen Witch. I hope Casey is doing well in her current endeavour.

    I would have to say my favorite post would have to have been this past October 28 (not because it was posted on my oldest’s birthday lol) but because of the product. VIOlight wow can I say that this is a wonderful product!! Now that I’ve said that I know that germs are always something I’m worried about (as it is with all mothers) and since all of my children have either iPods, Earbuds, Cel phones, ect…what a better way for me to take care of them without them thinking I’m fondling over them or treating them as a baby!! I currently have this on my wishlist for the hubby to buy for me but after this past winter and a house full of flu I do believe it will be on my next online shopping purchase!!     I love the guides! I obsess over reviews before buying anything for my kids (as if the wrong backpack for preschool will somehow keep them out of a good college).     One of my favorite blogs was this one (https://www.coolmompicks.com/2010/12/tummy_control_yoga_pants.php) about the comfort of yoga pants. I wear them all the time: around the house, running errands, exercising…..you name it. I had never tried yoga until a friend of mine introduced me to it while I was pregnant. Practicing yoga is relaxing and I feel like I de-stress at the end of the day. When I practice in the morning it gets me ready for the day and helps stretch all of more sore muscles from carring baby all day. Yoga pants are so comfortable. Love them!

    I love the Pee Wee’s perfect playhouse! The kids can create a fort without using all the couch cushions and blankets! I love that it clean up quickly and can be stored away without taking up much space! Great idea for kids of all ages!

    I always love your book suggestions, may they be for baby or parents. I have a huge list of “editor picks” children’s books that I’m slowly working on acquiring. So far they’ve been perfect. But the best was when you suggested this book. I got it for my husband for father’s day (like you suggested), when our daughter was only a couple months old and my husband thought it was a complete waste of time to read it. He was so wrong and now he actually lets his friends borrow it.     I loved this post because we are huge on getting the plastic out of the playroom(and our whole house)- and are quite close! We buy some big box wooden toys and things, but truly delight in purchasing as many handmade items as possible from small work at home moms. Our play food is all hand knit or crocheted.     My favorite item by far was the Nerdy Baby Flash Cards. I bought the ABC set and the Let’s Count to Ten set for my twin girls for Christmas, and they were a big hit. We go over them just about every day! I had to actually look up a few of these! Impress your relatives!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for the purl bee’s heart hair clip post! I am not usually up for crafts, but I made a couple of these for my daughter (as well as the rose clip they did last year), and have gotten so many compliments on them! Now I make them for gifts for all my friends who have little girls, and even made a rose cluster pin for a friend of mine. CMP, you made me crafty!

    One of my favorite posts that you guys did was Kristen’s, a while back, about her other blog, the Shredheads. I clicked over, and saw how effective the video had been for her, so I gave it a shot.

    As the mom of a 1 month old and a 4.5 year old, it’s super hard for me to fit in the time to get the exercise I need in order to stay cheerful and healthy. I love that you guys know that, and find solutions that actually work.

    I used this product all last summer, and no sunburn for either me or my child — hoorah! I really liked the ease of the spray bottle (first sprayed it on my hand then applied it to my child so that the fumes wouldn’t be inhaled) and how quickly it dried. No goopy mess!

    The most important post to me on CMP was the information on sunscreen ratings by the Environmental Working Group. It really impacted how we thought about sun protection and I think gave us really important information. We changed to some of their recommended brands and bought long-sleeved shirts. Anyway, it helped our skin-cancer and incredibly pale family a lot.

    I love this post on taking a look in our kids’ lunchboxes. My kid isn’t school-aged yet, but I work at a school, and some of the lunches I see appall me. Tortilla chips are not veggies! Pizza and ice cream every Friday makes me cringe.     It is very important to me to use organic and natural bath products on my toddler.     Back in 2008 while I was looking for a breast pimp, I turned to CMP to see what they recommended. I figured who better to help me figure out this large purchase then you guys. Thanks to this post, I purchased the freestyle and loved it. I used it for a year with my 1st and now using it with my second she is now 7 months.

    This is really hard! But of all the cool, clever things I have learned about through CMP, right now (probably because I am newly pregnant again and have a zillion first time pregnant friends), this very practical CMP discovery comes to mind! Will be buying several more tanks in about 7 months!
