Now that spring is here, a kid’s (and uh, a mom’s) fancy turns to ice cream–arguably our favorite of all the food groups. We consider ourselves ice cream connoisseurs around here, but I have to say, I was surprised to try a brand new ice cream made from, of all things, breast milk.
Mother’s Milk Pops
are a family effort in more ways than one. They’re the creation of mom
Janis, a lactation consultant, and her husband, Leif, a pastry
chef in Berkeley, California. When her children had finally weaned after
four years (wow!) they had so much remaining breast milk frozen, they
pulled out the ice cream maker and went to town. The result is now
appearing in local gourmet stores everywhere.
I really enjoyed
flavors like MamaBerry and Nipple Ripple, but I will say Mommy
Pear-est wasn’t my favorite. Also, if you can get past the blue-ish tint
on the Mama-nilla it’s actually quite good, if a little sweet.
It sort of gives new meaning to that phrase about not buying the cow when you can get the milk for free. Or at least, the Mother’s Milk. –Liz
You can find Mother’s Milk Pops in the freezer section of gourmet stores in your wildest dreams. Be sure to wish them a Happy April Fool’s while you’re there.

I heard that if you donate at least 1/2 a gallon of frozen breastmilk, you get a box of pops for free. Time to pump!
