Elizabeth Mitchell Sunny DayThis is the time of the year when the anticipation of holiday craziness, my kids’ frenetic schedule, and the darker, drearier day conspire to really bum us all out. On these days we really need a big dose of lovely to touch us and make us feel sunny all over.

So thank you, Elizabeth Mitchell, for coming out with a new beautiful collection of songs that is like a bouquet of fresh flowers in every room. But less messy.

Bright, beautiful and sweet, Elizabeth Mitchell’s brand new CD Sunny Day brings together American folk, Asian nursery songs and even old-time rock-n-roll in this follow up to the much-beloved You Are My Little Bird from ’06.

Starting off with the title song, the words the sun comes up, the flowers bloom, sung with a banjo quietly picking in the background, sets up the natural, organic tone heard throughout this collection of kid-friendly songs. That’s not to say this is a mellow CD: You’ve gotta hear Elizabeth’s daughter Storey rocking Chuck Berry’s School Days with friends. It’s totally smile inducing.
And though Elizabeth is definitely the lead voice here, it’s almost as if the recording studio had guests stopping in throughout, with Elizabeth’s family, Storey’s friends and even Dan Zanes contributing. This Little Light of Mine brings in the Children of Agape Choir of South Africa which turn a familiar song into a sort of hymn.
For those who have moved exclusively to MP3 downloads for their music, I’d seriously still recommend picking up the hard copy of this CD. Sunny Day includes the most beautiful cover art and booklet from CMP favorite Ida Pearle, who also illustrated You Are My Little Bird. And even beyond the illustrations, Elizabeth’s description of each song and how it came to be recorded made this CD even more enjoyable for us. -Christina
