Sseko sandalsDesigner Elizabeth Bohannan has an inspired mission: to help young women in Uganda achieve their higher learning goals. And she’s doing it through beautiful sandals.

Yes, sandals.

Sseko Designs (sey-ko)
was created to provide women with jobs during the 9-month gap between
secondary school and university, that exists so that students can earn
their tuition. Many young female students are unable to compete for fair
work in this very conflicted and still majorly male dominant society,
making Sseko an an amazing success story that helps women beat the odds.

The sandals themselves:  fun, flexible and durable. Pick
your size, your strap design from solids to funky patterns, and then
identify your tying style. Looking at the 10 suggestions on the website I
did fear this would be too high maintenance for me, but it couldn’t be
more simple- the directions are extremely easy. The soft adjustable
straps make them great for feet of all shapes and sizes and if you get
tired of one color, just order another.

It’s nice to know there is a direct physical connection
between the woman making these and the women wearing them and that your
purchase is a level of support that is life changing on their end. It
would be nice to see these take off to the level that TOMS shoes has.

Good luck Sseko- you’ve got our support. -Stephanie M
