The Pioneer Woman on Food Network As a long time fan of blogger and cookbook author Ree Drummond (and a contributor to her homeschooling blog), I’ve had the date marked on my calendar to catch her new Food Network show, The Pioneer Woman. So this past Saturday, my kids and I clamored around the television to catch the premiere.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth setting the DVR for it, we’ve got the scoop.

The show is set and filmed at the Drummond Ranch, and is as heavy on the the beautiful scenery and daily goings-on of her family as it is on the butter and whole milk. If you know Ree’s cooking, then that will come as no surprise.

The episodes feature her simple, down home recipes, which I have to say, may not be the healthiest or most practical. In other words, I probably won’t be making chicken fried steak for my family anytime soon. Still, they make sense given the context: hearty meals for a big family and ranch hands who work extremely hard 12-14 hour days. In any case, there are plenty of tips and takeaways that I think any parents can use in their daily cooking.

Most enthralling for all of us, however, is the window into Ree’s compelling life on her ranch; my kids were squealing at the screen when they finally got a peek at Charlie the Ranch Dog. From cattle wrangling to horse corralling, you get a taste of it all, which makes the show more than just a cooking show, the way her popular website is more than just a food blog.

I can say without a doubt that this is something my whole family will look forward to every week. Especially if we get more Charlie. -Kristen
