Mike Park's SmileDad-of-two Mike Park knows a thing or two about the music biz: He was
once the energetic lead in the big ’90s ska/punk band Skankin’ Pickle, touring with the likes of Rancid, Primus, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. He’s also the founder of Asian Man Records.

And now, like so many rockers-turned-parents, he’s turned his attentions to putting out an amazing kids’ album.

In his newest kid-friendly venture, Smile, he’s toned things down a bit to appeal to kids who are still sounding out the word s-k-a. I love how he says he made this CD with the approval of his son and daughter, so if you don’t like it, you can blame them. Fortunately, there is no need for blame.

With a sound that includes, of course, ska, along with plenty of happy rock-pop, this is a fast-paced CD with the kind of lyrics you’d expect a former punk to sing to his kids: Stay in school, eat your apples, and turn off the lights. No jump on the furniture or question authority, though my kids, at least, seem to have internalized that message already. Christina
