Too many Nook mattresses spoil the baby. In a good way.

Last year, Nook wowed me with the launch of their incredible (if expensive) Pebble crib mattress. Natural materials, no off-gassing, water and stain resistant and–bonus–it looked totally cool. Now they have a new mattress that even more mamas can afford. The Nook Pebble Lite offers the same conveniences and eco-friendliness in a package that lives up to its name–it weighs less and it costs less. Lite, get it? Now, there are some elements that differ from the original Pebble mattress, like the core is non-toxic foam, not latex. And the materials in the Lite mattress aren’t organic. But, really, the great features still exist...

Paper Lovely’s new calling cards are calling my name

I love the idea of carrying a calling card that really speaks to me. It would give my work-at-home career some validation. And who knows… just carrying that card could open up some doors. Choosing the design is like deciding who you are or how you want other people to see you. [don’t miss a nice offer after the jump!] With the new collection of calling cards by Paper Lovely, designed by Kim Burks, there are seven designs to choose from and each one is elegant, unique and inspiring. The paper is made from recovered materials, so not only...

Field notes from a journey of unexpected grace

Kyran Pittman’s subtitle for her memoir Planting Dandelions is “Field Notes from a Semi-Domesticated Life.” I hope she’ll forgive me for repurposing it here to tell you why this is the mothering memoir you would be foolish to skip because you think they’re all the same. If you read Kyran’s blog, Notes To Self, or if you’ve caught her work in Good Housekeeping, you already know that she excels at weaving words into imagery and painting every detail of a scene until you feel like you’re standing right there with her, or maybe right inside her head. Even having...

Make friends with Lunch Money’s latest CD

Along with standing and getting out of diapers, one of my favorite so-called “developmental milestones” was when my kids grabbed another’s pudgy little hand and declared this person their “fwend.” Capturing these moments of first love makes Lunch Money’s newest kindie-pop release so poignantly perfect for all kids who are just discovering the joys, and sometimes heartache, of friendship. [don’t miss a great giveaway after the jump!] The follow up to one of my all-time favorites Dizzy, Lunch Money’s Original Friend makes me yearn for the days when my friends were just a bike ride away. Lead singer/songwriter Molly Ledford...

Kleynimals solve the great baby-car key dilemma

The beloved car keys–Babies just can’t get enough of them. And no matter how realistic those toy keys look, babies know the difference. And even though desperate times can call for desperate measures, it’s certainly not ideal. That’s why Kleynimals are so brilliant. Inspired by the same dilemma, a smart mom invented the very smart Kleynimals: toy car keys that look like cute little animals, but made from non-toxic, food grade stainless steel. Kleynimals sound like keys when you shake them and they probably taste like keys, you know, minus all the grime, sharp edges, and possible lead. Because...

Modern art for the road

Now that my nineteen month old has officially reached the dreaded “dropsy stage,” I try to attach everything I can to her stroller and high chair, from her sippy cup to her toys. So, when I found the MoMA Shapes and Colors Stroller Cards, I was intrigued. Five cards, each in a different shape, feature bold, contemporary photos one one side and an interesting texture on the other. Think: a photo of a heart-shaped cookie backed by a sticky heart on the other side. I love that they’re not only educational, but very well designed. Not that I would...

Sipidee doo dah

I just saw the cutest ever sippy cups–so cute in fact that despite the fact that my girls are (thankfully!) almost past the sippy cup stage, I immediately thought about whether I could justify owning them. The sippy cups from SugarBooger (I know, ignore the name) are minis–just 6 oz–making them great to grab on the go. The designs are just fabulous, from the pretty butterfly design seen here, to the sleek vintage alphabet, and the funky Day of the Dead motif. But what I really love is that they work just fine without that BPA-free sippy lid too,...

Web Coolness – sexy nursing bras, awesome playhouses, and a $20,000 crib

Here are some things we’ve liked reading around the web this week. We hope you will too. On Momformation, Kristen asks should nursing bras be sexy? (You can guess the answer.) Mamas of boys: You’ll love this new site, The Frog and Snail Society, started by talented blogger and CMP friend Roxanna Sarmiento. We’re blown away by these amazing kids playhouses inspired by modern architecture. (Eh, who needs to save for college.) Speaking of splurges, yes, Mariah Carey spent $20,000 on a crib. We’re digging one of our reader’s imaginative new homemade baby food blog, Yumnums. Quince Puree, anyone?...

Meal planning just hooked up with your local grocery store

There’s plenty of websites where you can go check out this week’s grocery sales, if you’re into that sort of thing. (Not judging, just, um, snore.) And we’ve reviewed plenty of websites and apps to help you do your weekly meal planning, too. But this is the first we’ve seen of a glorious melding of the two. At Food on the Table, you enter some basic information like your family’s food preferences, plus your preferred grocery stores, and then not only can you then pick from amongst suggested recipes, it’ll highlight items on sale this week with approximate savings...

Cupcakes just for grownups

I have come to love looking forward to my Foodzie tasting box at the beginning of each month, and all the little nibbles and gourmet noshes contained therein. A few weeks back, I opened my box to such an amazing treat: Mini cupcakes in very adult flavors. I had heard of Kyotofu cupcakes, because they get a lot of buzz around NYC, but I had never bitten into one of these moist little gourmet cakes until just now. Subtle, delicate flavors like Matcha Green Tea and Miso Chocolate are a welcome change from that traditional cupcake flavor: Lots and...

Say goodbye to shoelaces, kids.

If I can give you a tip in the sneaker trend department, it’s that laces are going away. Not in favor of Velcro, but in favor of nothing at all. I’m seeing lots of plain, unlaced eyelets, all preppy boat-shoe style. So cool. If you’re a Converse fan, you’ll like the new All Star Simple Slip sneakers in seven swell colors. You’ll get all of the on-and-off easiness with none of the struggle. They start in toddler size 2, so even your pre-walker can look snazzy this spring. For bigger kids, I happen to adore what long-time fave Umi shoes...

Celebrate your baby’s birth with robots

The best post-baby gift I ever received was half of a chocolate cake–which I ate with a spork at midnight in my hospital bed. But if you’re looking for a gift that’s thoughtful, hip, memorable, and won’t leave crumbs in the baby’s hair, I’ve got to recommend these adorable birth prints from Oh So Smitten. And smitten we are. First of all, the birth prints are perfect for framing, from the thick, beautiful paper to the archival inks. Secondly, they’re fully customizable, from the colors of the design to the name and birth information. Thirdly, one of the three...

Happy 5th Birthday, Cool Mom Picks! (And prizes!)

KRISTEN: Back in early 2006, a few months after I started blogging, I thought it might be fun to start another blog that highlighted the cool, handmade goodies I found so many online moms making and selling to help keep their households afloat. It’ll be cheeky! And fun to read! And it’ll save moms time! And it’s called ‘Cool Mom Sh*t, I said in an email to a few of my newfound online friends and writers I admired. Liz emailed me back with a few ideas for the blog and asked if I wanted a partner. Then she told...
