Web Coolness – Peeps winners, Passover recipes, cool books and Easter fun

Here are some things we’ve liked reading around the web the week. We hope you will too. You’ve got to see the winners of the Washington Post’s 2011 Peeps Diorama Contest. (any idea which is our favorite?) Also, we found a whole Peeps gallery on Flickr. Hilarious! Check out Kristen’s list of 5 cool books from 5 cool moms. You may recognize one of the authors. Here’s a great contest for artistic kids: Win one of our favorite scooters by designing a Scooter Buddy. Lil Sugar has some great kid-friendly recipes for Passover for those of you going yeast-free....

Cuter than the average pic-a-nic basket

I don’t care if Toronto hasn’t quite gotten the spring memo yet– I’m already dreaming about park visits and picnic lunches. And when I spotted this adorable insulated picnic lunch bag at ModCloth, I fell in love. And I knew right away that I wouldn’t be handing it over to any of my kids. Oh, no. That sweet thing will be all mine. The Blueberry lunch bag is cute, but I think my heart belongs to the Watermelon one. (Gosh, even the color names are adorable.) The red checkered pattern on the Watermelon lunch bag reminds me of a...

Damn Fine Tea – My haven from the squalls of motherhood

For over 2000 years at least, civilizations rose and fell, wars were won and lost– all for tea. And now, it’s a just another rack of brightly colored, shrink-wrapped boxes at the supermarket. That’s a damn shame. But Damn Fine Tea is trying to bring tea back where it belongs: to the realm of obsession. Instead of buying tea in impersonal little bags and gulping it down before the kids need us and it goes cold, the makers of Damn Fine Tea want us to savor every step of the tea ritual. Their packaging is clever and beautiful. The directions are...

Two green thumbs up for these Earth Day ideas that don’t cost you a dime

If you’ve been reading Cool Mom Picks for a while, you know that we are always looking for sustainably-made, eco-friendly products from conscientious companies, big and small.  So for this Friday’s Earth Day, instead of giving you more green products you can buy (although hey, we might do that too), we want to point out some cool Earth Day-related initiatives that don’t require you to open up your pocketbook for that other kind of green. –Christina Paper Culture has long been one of our favorite sites for gorgeous photo and greeting cards, and for their unwavering commitment to protecting...

Everybody’s crazy ’bout a sharp dressed little man

If your little guy is anything like mine, his wardrobe is stocked with a lot of the standard-issue dude-themed clothes: frogs, trucks, monkeys. You know.  So I thought this new idea for a mini-man’s dresser was especially brilliant. In fact, it might be a bold new step into the world of ha-babe-dashery.  Fat Tie shirts and ties are 100% soft cotton shirts with actual ties sewed flat onto them. You can get the shirts in a slew of colors, tie types, and sleeve styles for boys 12M-5T. And, as any MBA knows, the details make all the difference–the way they sewed three large buttons where...

Here comes Peter Zombietail

There is no joy like a frozen hollow chocolate rabbit. All year, I long for crisp milk chocolate that crumbles in with every bite. But have you ever wondered why they’re hollow? Have you ever wondered what happened to their… BRAAAAAAAIIIIIIINS? We did. And we think we’ve found the culprit. Two words: Zombie Bunny. Think Geek has done it again with the Chocolate Zombie Bunny. He’s made with 8oz. of solid white chocolate and comes complete with exposed ribs, blood spatters, a queasy green patina, and one seriously crazy, edible zombie eye. The good news? We’re pretty sure he...

The Easter Bunny probably hates storing baskets, too

You know what I’ve always wondered about Easter baskets? Where people store them every other day of the year. Because if there’s one thing that’s not exactly storage-friendly, it’s a big, round basket with a gigantic handle on top. This is why I adore the beautiful new Easter Egg Hunt Bag tutorial over at The Purl Bee. I just love the idea of doing a little rainbow rickrack one. Or maybe taking my chances and letting my kids pick some of their favorite colors for the embellishments.  Either way, Easter bags are a perfect solution to my storage woes....

Hey kids – Go play outside!

Here in Atlanta where I live, the weather has been nice since the beginning of March, which means my kids have already exhausted Hide n’ Seek, Freeze Tag, and two entire boxes of sidewalk chalk. So when I saw this book when I was at the Mom 2.0 Summit in New Orleans last week, I knew I had to pick it up. All it took was one quick flip through Jennifer Ward’s Let’s Go Outside!: Outdoor Activities and Projects to Get Your Kids Closer to Nature for me to know that I had to buy it. Packed with great...
