The best lightweight city strollers? – Reader Q&A

I’ve been a huge fan of my Maclaren Techno XT. It’s a 2003. Sadly, it’s reaching the end of its usable years and I’m in the market for a new stroller. It must be subway friendly, lightweight and comfortable. Before I just purchase another Maclaren, I’m wondering if there is anything new out there I should try first. -Michelle I’m a subway-riding, stroller-pushing, big-city-dweller, too, Michelle, so I think I have an idea of what you’re looking for. My intial thought is that another Maclaren will probably be your best bet again. They’re excellent, hardy strollers that are lightweight,...

5 crazy colorful cocktail rings under $50

I’ve always had a thing for big crazy cocktail rings, no doubt inspired by the collection of them my Great Aunt Bea owned from the 60s and 70s. I still have some of the originals, so I always get a little chuckle when they come back in style. [don’t miss a great discount code after the jump!] If you don’t have the bucks for the original, I always love browsing the crazy choices at Fantasy Jewelry Box, which is like my secret spot for affordable costume jewelry. None of these pieces are more than $50. This Coral and turquoise...

Combine Harvester fans – Your dream has come true

A couple of years ago, my son was perfectly happy with the regular old planes, trains, and automobile shirts. But these days, he’s a veritable truck expert, so scarily knowledgeable of all vehicles that those simple shirts he used to wear just aren’t detailed enough for his informed taste. So you can imagine his glee when I showed him the newest, coolest, never-seen-before shirt from the dad-owned Shirts That Go. You know you’re a mom (or a farmer) when you’re excited about a Combine Harvester shirt, the newest addition to the collection of vehicle shirts at Shirts That Go....

This line of organic cosmetics is the balm. (Ha.)

I’m known around my house as a bit of a lip balm junkie. Every cupboard, pocket and purse has at least one tube or pot of the stuff stashed in it somewhere. So when it came time for volunteers to test the highly lauded RMS Beauty line for CMP, you can bet I raised my hand wildly. RMS Beauty was created by top NYC makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift, after realizing she was developing health difficulties because of all the toxic chemicals and heavy metals in her system from being around so many cosmetics. Committed to the health of women,...

How to travel with kids when you’ve outgrown a hotel room

Though three kids doesn’t seem like such a big family anymore, whenever we travel I’m reminded that our party of five was never meant to be the norm for hotel rooms. We’ve had to squish cots into a standard room, spring for two adjoining rooms, or even go-for-broke with two-room suites in order to travel a few times a year. But then a few years ago, I ventured into the world of renting homes from private owners, and we are officially hooked. Interested? I have some tips on how you can get a place big enough for your brood,...

It’s time to raise the curtain…

Last month, cool-tee-site Threadless held a Muppet design contest to jump on the excitement many of us feel about the new Muppets movie coming out this fall. (New Muppets! Whee!) Threadless invited anyone to submit a Muppets tee-shirt design and promised to make the winning design into a tee all of us could buy for ourselves. Out of a whole bunch of submissions, the winner was chosen, and we love it. The colorful Together Again was picked as the winning tee—how quickly can you name the characters? If you love more than the tee, a special Muppets bundle also includes an exclusive poster and...

The Breast Milk Baby Doll – Because not all babies take bottles

You may have already gotten wind of the world’s first Breast Milk Baby Doll, now available in the US. And of course, it’s stirring up all sorts of controversy. As hard as my husband and I tried, we could only get my older three breastfed kids take a bottle a handful of times. It seemed only natural, then, that when they’d play with a baby doll, they’d pretend to breastfeed it. So you can imagine how curious I was to learn more about this doll. At first glance, the Breast Milk Baby Doll looks like any other cute little...

Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo – Undiscovered paradise for families

The idea of a family beach vacation usually conjures up images of crowded beaches, a muddy ocean, and food I will wish I hadn’t eaten. Doesn’t really sound like a vacation to me. So when Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo invited Cool Mom Picks to check out their resort for families, you can bet my interest was piqued. Costa Rica is one of those places that not only looks amazing but actually is, considering every single person I spoke to who had been there had nothing but awesome things to say. Followed by, “I can’t wait to...

Tattly tattoos give you hipster cred without the needles

There are still a few things about me that give me a teeny bit of remaining indie cred (I’ve visited the Etsy offices! I own the first They Might Be Giants album on cassette!) but tattoos are definitely not one of them. I know, I know–they’ve considered kicking me out of Brooklyn for it. Well it turns out that one fellow Brooklyn parent who still has indie cred up the whazoo, blogger Tina Roth Eisenberg of Swiss Miss, has gone and fixed that for me. She hasn’t opened up a tattoo shop in DUMBO–but maybe the next best thing....

Adorable wall decals that don’t hurt your walls, your kids, or the world

I’d always kind of held the opinion that if I’d seen one wall decal, I’d seen them all. That is, until Pop & Lolli wall decals came my way. And then I pretty much decided that I didn’t need to see any others. Ever again. These gorgeous (and cute and funny and adorable and stylish)  fabric wall decals won me over not because of how great they look (and they do look awesome!), but because of how amazing they are in every other way, too. They’re easy to use — completely re-positionable and reusable — and made from kid-safe...

Stickers for boys. Or girls. Cool how that works.

Imagine a knight in his breeches. It’s up to you to put the correct clothing and armor on him. Without the proper threads, he’s absolutely lost. What’s a lad to do? We’ve seen paper dolls before, which almost always cater to girls and often involve ballerinas, fairies, and princesses. But these? Different. Usborne Activities takes sticker dressing in an entirely new direction with their Sticker Dressing Knights. We’re talking jousting and shiny armor. Children learn about different types of knights, as well as the associated garb, with easy-to-follow directions; although younger ones may need some assistance with the reading...

Your favorite silly old Pooh bear is now a soft, organic Pooh bear

The Winnie the Pooh movie hitting theaters today promises to be a sweet mix of old and new, combining classic Pooh animation with a few new voices– like Craig Ferguson as Owl. The overall idea is to charm Pooh fans of all ages with a timeless (and mercifully two-dimensional) animated trip to the Hundred Acre Wood. And we love it. So it makes sense that miYim’s new line of organic Pooh stuffed animals would have the same appeal, mixing classic style and sentiment with an eco-conscious 2011 flair.[don’t miss a truly great giveaway after the jump!] miYim is one...

Bubble Bum: The portable booster seat that may be my favorite new thing ever

I’m heading out on our first European family vacation this summer (I know!) and, mom that I am, was already stressing out about the car seat situation. Just in time, I discovered the portable car booster seat Bubble Bum and have been doing the happy dance ever since. Truly, I haven’t been this excited about a new kids’ product in a good long time. This portable booster seat is wildly popular in Europe, and I’m thrilled it’s finally approved for sale in the US. I got the chance to try one and seriously? Awesome. The reason it’s portable is...

Three cheers for the red, white and beachy

Last year I discovered the wonderful handmade cotton totes from Bayan Hippo, and grabbed one with narrow black and white stripes, stat. Since it’s still holding up so nicely this year, I’m thinking of adding another to my collection. Especially since the prices are so great. With everything in the navy/white or red/white stripes realm so hot this summer, I’ve got my eye on this red and white striped sailor tote with soft cotton rope handles that make it nice and summer casual. It’s lightweight so it folds up easily in a larger suitcase if you’re traveling. And it’s...

Planning the perfect Harry Potter Party

When my newly minted 7-year old daughter asked me to throw her a Harry Potter birthday party with only two weeks to plan, I said “absolutely!” And then ran straight to my computer to try to figure out how the heck to pull this off for about eight little girls ranging in age from four to seven. Well thanks to the Internet, a little creativity on my own part (pat pat), and perhaps a bit of magic, the party went off without a hitch. If you’re planning a party to celebrate the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part...
