5 tech picks you won’t want to miss this week

September is upon us, friends, and we’re celebrating with cool tech at Cool Mom Tech. (Of course!)  Whether you need a quick app to entertain your preschooler in the carpool line or a surge protector to keep six laptops humming, we’ve got it for you. Here are 5 of our favorite picks of the last week that you might have missed. 1. Our back to school tech guide launches with a round-up of some of our favorite must-have gadgets for back to school. Althouhg we haven’t yet found a magic alarm clock that makes 6am seem tolerable. 2. A...

Look what these kindie bands did this summer, Part One

While I was busy applying yet another layer of SPF 50 to my fair children, some of our favorite kindie musicians, and one newbie to the genre, were putting out great music to get us through the next few months. Thankfully, unlike my fading tan, their tunes are just as fresh now as they were when they first came out, so keep reading to find out which CD’s and downloads are must-haves for your family. -Christina Caspar Babypants, aka Chris Ballew of Presidents of the United States of America fame, is back with his fourth release, Sing Along! He...

Totes fabulous!

My collection of reusable grocery bags is a ragtag group of ne’er-do-wells. There are the boring but cheap bags, the political ones we got free at the parade, the glittery Halloween one, and the very confused grocery bag featuring a pig smiling from a sandwich. But then this adorable reusable tote from one of our favorite baby brands had to show up and throw them all into the depths of self-loathing. It’s the new Faraway Fold Out Tote by Petunia Pickle Bottom, and each of their five patterns (including my favorite, Frolicking in Fez) is so gorgeous, you’ll wish...

Invasion of the moustaches!

I’ve said before that the moustache is the hipster icon of 2011. And now, it’s hitting the world of kids and baby clothes too, courtesy of one very popular designer. [don’t miss a special offer after the jump] The Stella McCartney Kids collection for fall 2011 includes some hilarious tees like this moustached deer shirt, that’s made of organic cotton and features a glow-in-the-dark applique. How exactly something that glows in the dark is organic I’m not sure, but I’ll take their word for it. If you prefer your moustaches more Groucho-like, you can also find one on this...

Leaves of grass, now on your bookshelf

Some books are like cut flowers: I get them, enjoy them, and forget about them. But some books are like lawns, like rich green grass that I want to cultivate and nurture and wiggle between my toes every Spring.  Okay, maybe just the first two. If you, too, have some books that will live on your shelf forever, you might like these adorable GreenMarker bookmarks. The package comes with 75 markers made from sticky Post-It note material that resemble a beautiful bouquet of green grass when placed at different points throughout the book. If you’re sick of dog-ears in...

Shop it to Me turns your laptop into a personal sale shopper

I love a bargain, but I often hate the effort it takes to find one. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone keep tabs on all your favorite retailers for you, and let you know when the things you love go on sale? Yeah, that would be super. Fortunately, that is totally doable, thanks to Shop it to Me. This free service updates you on sales at your favorite brands and stores via their Sale Mail; you fill out a profile that includes size and brand information, as well as specifics of what you’re shopping for (dresses, shoes, accessories)....

Art, meet alphabet

Instead of yet another poster for your kids’ rooms, I’m kind of digging this take on abc art, from Toronto Etsy shop, bookhou at home. The laser-etched birch plywood of this wooden alphabet would be so cool in a nursery or playroom. And I love the typewriter font on everything, this included. If your kids are outgrowing the alphabet (say it isn’t so!) poke around the shop for lots of loveliness. And a few more reasons to dig Toronto. -Liz Find the wooden alphabet and more for the home online at bookhou at...

Have pouch, will travel in style.

Okay, show of hands: Who else gets ready for a fabulous trip by overloading a bunch of sandwich baggies with half-full sample bottles and hotel soaps? Um, me. Not exactly glamorous. Know what we be much more fitting?  This pouch. “No matter how much I have seen, there is always so much more that I have not.” The words are perfect, and so is the design. This flat canvas travel pouch is just the right size for all the little doodads you keep in your carry-on for in-flight and post-flight primping. They’ve also got a pouch that says “always...

Take my heart, please.

Some mornings, as I leave for work, my daughter says, “Mommy, give me something from your bag so I can remember you!” I reach in and pull out a business card, a pen…anything will do really. It’s become a sweet little tradition between us. But now I think I have a new thing with which to send her off to school that’s better than a dog-eared ATM receipt. The second I saw these first day of school felt hearts I was smitten. So basic, and yet so adorable. And the price is just right. Of course, the price can...

The march of the marionettes

On a recent trip to Prague, I fell in love with the town’s infamous toy shops. Somehow, I managed to squeeze into my bag a set of 6″ marionettes for my kids, along with a small puppet theater. Who would know it would turn out to be the best-loved guilt gift I ever brought home from a business trip. The sweet Marionety shop is up a cobblestone street near the Prague Castle, and is filled with everything from inexpensive mass-produced wooden puppets, to hand-carved antiques that ring in over $1000. I grabbed a few of the small Marionettes and...

Hello, cute back to school clothes! (Also, Hello Kitty)

Every year, I promise my kids one special back to school outfit, and now that it’s officially September (eek!) I guess it’s that time again. Generally I’m a big believer in $8 jeans, but one splurge always seems reasonable, especially when they love it love it love it. Fortunately, we’ve scored you an exclusive discount on some of the special new fall kidswear at one of my favorite online boutiques. Arte Bebe always showcases all that’s hip and stylish for babies and young kids, and this fall is no different. I’m loving the new line of Misha Lulu Hello...
