When my first daughter was born, I had absolutely no idea that babies scratched themselves (oops!), so I found myself putting socks on her hands to protect her face.

I’m sorry but these things are a horrible idea. Babies are learning about the world with their touch, this is depriving them of a chance to learn and explore. I refused to use mittens on both my kids and they both survived all their little scratches just fine. I just made sure to keep their nails trimmed so they didn’t suffer too much damage.
I don’t think these are a horrible idea. Both my children had eczema and would scratch themselves bloody. Raking their nails over their arms, legs, and face. Cutting their nails helped to some extent if I did it almost every day but they could still manage to raise welts with their little stubby fingers. So they wore mittens. I don’t think they explored or learned any less. They survived this just fine.
