I spent a good portion of my childhood coloring, drawing and creating and was very proud of what my mother assured me was some serious talent. I can’t even imagine how excited I would have been if she then had one of my creations turned into a doll from my very own artwork.
Child’s Own does just that in an incredibly accurate and impressive way. What started as a way to make one boy’s wildly imaginative drawings turned into this uber cool home-based business.
Their attention to detail what makes these handmade works of art so so special; if your kid’s monkey has 6 arms, heart-shaped teeth and a rocket ship belly button? Child’s Own will get the 3-D version as close to your child’s drawing as they can.
Just browse the gallery and the Child’s Own Studio Flickr page and you’ll be as amazed as I was.
Estimated turnaround time is about 4-6 weeks and pricing starts at about (updated) $250 which reflects the quality of the craftsmanship, but is definitely not cheap. Still, there is no question that your child will fall head-over-heels for their new custom BFF.
How to get started? Visit Child’s Own website and send an email order with all the required info for turning kids’ art into dolls. Then sit tight and wait for greatness!
Your readers should know that Child’s Own turn around time is much longer than the stated 4-6 weeks. She blogged on Tuesday that her site has gone viral and is receiving hundreds of emails.
Thanks for the heads up! So happy to hear of her success.
What a fabulous idea!
This reminds me of http://www.art2believe.com. It was coolmompicks.com’s Pick of the Year in 2008. I love seeing companies bring kids’ artwork to life!
Yes we love them too! We’ve found quite a few over the years. Here’s a post on other ways to bring your kids’ artwork to life as keepsakes:

WOW. Amazing idea for a birthday gift that will be treasured forever. She deserves the success!!
What cool idea! It must be magical for the little artists to see their creations come to life like that.
Those dolls are simply adorable. I’m excited now…I can only think of how excited I would have been to get one as a child. Very nice find. Thanks
I love this idea. I used to make toys for my girls based on their own design.I still have their sketches and 3-D creations …I think the earliest one was form the time they were 3 years old, that’s when they drawings sort of resembled some sort of things. It really very rewording process, and they still cherish their own creations. Now that they are older they are making their own toys 🙂
according to the FAQs on the site, the pricing starts at $250 plus shipping. Much different than the $60 mentioned in this article.
Thanks for the info Leslie. We’ll update the post. Clearly her prices have gone up (a lot) since we first wrote about her 3 years ago. It looks like her craftsmanship has improved significantly too, as have the final results.
