Beauty and the bike

Once upon a time, we fell in love with a pink t-shirt of a princess riding a T-Rex. Guess what? Now she’s riding a hog. Forget bad to the bone–she’s bad to the bow. (Because her pigtails have bows, of course.) Our pals at Jusami have struck gold again with the adorable Chopper Girl shirt that proves princesses don’t necessarily need towers or unicorns or princely rescue. This girl just needs her trusty motorcycle (and helmet!), and it’s time for adventure. We love Jusami not only because their designs are delish, but also because their shirts are of super-soft...

How to do smoky eyes. A.K.A. If I can do it, you can do it.

For ages now, I’ve wanted to learn how to do the smoky eye thing–those perfectly smudged, beautifully lined eyes that manage to find that sweet spot between “racoon” and “morning after.” And yet, for ages now, I have tried…and failed. This is one beauty trend that has eluded me. Until now. As it turns out I just had the wrong tools. I was introduced to the Laura Mercier Kohl eye pencil last year and wouldn’t you know it–I’ve already bought two more since then. The Stormy Grey color is the perfect charcoal hue, with the perfect level of smudgeability....

Your fortune: A very sweet Valentine’s Day

As Valentine’s Day creeps closer, I’ve been looking out for treats that don’t list corn syrup or “chocolate-y” filling among the ingredients. One ingredient I do like: Felt. And that’s pretty much all these adorable fortune cookies are made of. The Valentine’s Fortune Cookies from Helen of CMP favorite Curly Birds is ridiculously adorable. You can tuck your own fortune inside and send it off in your kid’s lunchbox on the 14th, leave one at each place setting at breakfast. The box of 3 cookies plus fortune slips is only $8, but Helen, being as awesome as she is,...

This sheep rocks!

My kids inherited a rocking horse that’s all bells and whistles–it whinnies, neighs, clip-clops, and plays some sort of country song. I’m pretty sure it says “yeehaw,” too, which doesn’t really make sense. It’s too much, even for them. Who wants to rock on something that shrieks and beeps the whole time? If you ask me, this Rocking Sheep by Bright Spark Design is the ideal rocker. Inspired by a Danish design, it’s handmade with Baltic birch plywood, reclaimed scrap wood, and real sheepskin. Plus, every one is test-ridden by the designer’s own 18-month-old daughter before it’s deemed acceptable. Beautiful, classic–and...

Heart tattoos for Valentine’s Day! (Don’t worry, they wash off.)

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, and plenty of parents’ quests to steer clear of cavity-causing treats to pass out in the classroom (not that there’s anything wrong with it!), our friends at Tatt.ly do it again, with a totally fabulous line of indie artist-created Valentine’s temporary tattoos. And by the way, they’re not so bad on adults either. Hit the What’s New section to see designs created by designers Tina Roth Eisenberg of Swiss Miss, Julia Rothman, Bianca Gomez and more. When I was in high school I would have been all over those besties heart tattoos, but...

Shirts for books

I believe in the essential power of reading–my kids have the stuffed bookcases to prove it. But not every kid does. So I love the idea of this website that lets you buy an amazingly cute, supersoft, combed-cotton T-shirt to get more books in the hands of little ones who don’t have access to them. Did I mention amazingly cute? [don’t miss a great giveaway after the jump!] I can’t get over this StoryTee from the website, OffOurChests. I mean, “Not Photoshopped”–how perfect a statement for our naturally adorable kids in this digitally-enhanced age. The best part: for every StoryTee you...

Pictures worth at least a thousand words

I want my kids to be book lovers, as in sneak a flashlight under the covers, beg for a nighttime story, know their way around the library kind of book lovers. So along with a sturdy bookshelf packed with favorite childhood titles and their very own library card, I love these prints that turn a storybook into something as magical as the story itself: Art. Spineless Classics takes those beloved stories like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and the Wizard of Oz and uses the words to form an image from the story, like Peter Pan with Tinkerbell or...

Infinitely beautiful

Wabi sabi suki is a Japanese concept that means “tranquil beauty.” It is based on the simple elegance of form, texture, and color and occurs when human hands bring out nature’s beauty in a way that echoes the material’s inherent nature. Or, in other words, THIS. THIS SCARF. GIVE IT TO ME. The Orla Cowl by Tickled Pink Knits on Etsy is utterly gorgeous in its simplicity. Hand-knit in 100% certified organic fair trade cotton, it’s a wonderful scarf alternative for those with allergies to wool or… ahem… super-cheap acrylic accessories. If you like the idea of lush, stylish...

5 cool ways to ring in the Year of the Dragon

Happy Chinese New Year, mamas, or as my Chinese relatives say: Kung Hei Fat Choi. I’m doing a little extra celebrating this year because it’s the Year of the Dragon, which just so happens to be my own Zodiac sign. For those of you with babies being born this year, or kids who just want to get into the spirit, I’ve rounded up a bunch of cool gifts, crafts, books, and cards to help you and your kids celebrate The Year of the Dragon right along with me. I’m a huge fan of Tree by Kerri Lee, whose Chinese...

Lately Lily – World travelers R Us

I don’t have many strong beliefs but one thing I feel very passionately about is travel. We have just this one world provided to us and I believe it is our responsibility as global citizens to get to know it a bit beyond our own backyards. I fully plan on showing my daughter as much of the world as I am able and encouraging her to go out and explore on her own…. but she’s 2. So for now, we’ll start the global education at home with this amazing site.  I was so thrilled with the discovery of the...
