TaskRabbit – a.k.a. your very own personal assistant

Sometimes I feel like my days are filled with nothing but a bunch of things I have to get done. Thankfully, there’s a new website that hooks people like me up with someone willing to help with everything and anything, from grocery shopping to cooking dinner.  The new website TaskRabbit is a more dignified-than-CraigsList-way to hire someone to do something you don’t want to do. You post the task you need done on their message board with an amount you’re willing to pay. Then wait for offers to come in from their background-checked “task rabbits.” Next, you hire whoever...

A printable 2012 calendar that does more than track the days

When we discovered French site Tiny-Us last year, we were taken with their mission to sell paper dolls and other printables as a fundraiser for a local school for children with disabilities. And now I’m just as taken with their new 2012 printable calendar. You pay whatever you want, and get a PDF of the calendar to print. What’s really sweet is that after each month is through, your children will have two new paper doll outfits to look forward to. Give generously–every bit of your donation goes right to the Présence charity. Nice way to start the year. –Liz...

Meryl Streep, meet my kids’ bedtime

I love reading books out loud. They really make the stories come alive in a fun and vibrant way. But I’ll admit I’m no Meryl Streep. Know who is a Meryl Streep? Meryl Streep. And now she’s narrating one of my favorite children’s stories from one of my favorite authors in a terrific book/audio book set. Brave Irene by William Steig (of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Shrek fame) features a seriously strong broad with major willpower. That’s kind of how I see Meryl Streep too, so her voice on the companion CD that pairs with the book...

Crib bumper safety – no longer an issue with this bumper-less option

There’s always been so much controversy about crib bumper safety. Even so, when my first son was a baby, I always longed for a bumper. They looked so cool in the crib and added that extra bit of style to the nursery. However since 2010 was the year that they banned the bumper, skip*hop has been smart to create a very clever alternative The new Complete Sheet from skip*hop is a bumper-less crib sheet that lends the look of an actual bumper. Sounds like magic, right? The truth is, it’s really a pretty simple sheet, with a contrasting design...

Toy storage on sale? Perfect timing.

When you’re a parent, a new year doesn’t necessarily mean mimosas at brunch as much as it does finding a place to put all the new games, toys, dress-up clothes and various other things that the kids received over the holidays. Thankfully one of our favorite cool storage solutions is having a big sale that will help you stash the stuff and reclaim your floors. We’ve long loved ViaBoxes‘ contemporary storage systems for their clean lines, sustainable-birch construction and color schemes that don’t scream “Kids Furniture!” In fact, the Brooklyn Set shown above could fit right into my living...

These tights were made for booting

I pretty much live in boots all winter long. Which means my drawers are also home to a healthy stock of stocking and leggings. The problems with stockings and boots though, is that I often still need to wear socks over them to keep my toes warm, and keep the stocking from catching on any boot innards that might be less than gentle. And then, depending on the boot, that may mean it starts feeling a little snug for comfort. Enter a brilliant new product called Bootights. You can see where this is going, right? Bootights are like a...
