The Picky Palate cookbookI love cookbooks. I’ve never once turned out a dish that looks anything like sumptuous food photos, but a gal can dream, can’t she? Especially around the holidays–oh, to be that hostess.

Since I despise ingredient lists longer than Homer’s Odyssey, I’m really pumped to have found a new cookbook with yummy photography, minimal recipe ingredient lists, and delicious results. There may just be hope for me–and my holiday table–yet.

The popular food blogger Jenny Flake has turned out her first cookbook, The Picky Palate, based on her wildly popular blog of the same name. Jenny’s genius ability to create really fun, unusual and delicious dishes is all the more awesome considering the recipes are accessible to almost anyone who can figure out how to turn on the stove. I made her recipe for Peanut-Ginger Chicken Noodles and my family adored it–including my 7-year old son who will turn his nose up at a dish if there’s a fleck of pepper showing. The cookbook is also a terrific antidote to this sugary season of candy canes and gingerbread cookies, with its mouthwatering pics of smart, nutritious meals.

I really liked the clean layout of the book. It’s wire-bound for easy page-turning in the kitchen. Each page features one simple recipe, a beautiful, appealing photograph, and a homey little note from Jenny explaining her love for the particular dish. The whole effect is quite charming, and will make a super gift for quite a few folks on my list.

Just to whet your palate a bit, here are some of the recipes I know I’m going to be trying out from The Picky Palate: Maple-Bacon Muffins with Sweet Butter and BBQ-Peach-Glazed Meatloaf, anyone? Oh, and Oreo-Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies. Baby, bring ’em on. –Shari
