Yes you can, kids.

What happens when an artist from Pixar and a designer for the Gap meet, marry, and combine their talents? Tiny Teru tees. And the results are inspirational and awesome. The designs in this line of babies and kids’ shirts are inspired by classic children’s animation–so adorable (my daughter especially loves this baseball tee)–aand are all originally hand-drawn in pencil, mixed media or water colors. But what I love is that each sports a very important message: “I am able.” In fact, every design has some variation on the word “able,” like unforgettable and huggable.                                              ...

7 of the prettiest paper napkins

As it turns out, a stash of pretty paper napkins are always good to have around for unexpected company or impromptu picnics. This is a lesson I learned last week when we had to pull out the polka dot “happy birthday!” napkins over cocktails. Oy. Here are a few luncheon-sized napkins I would love to have stashed away because they can double as cocktail napkins in a pinch. They’re not too cutesie, nor do they look like they’re leftover from Grandma’s house. Or (eep) from Halloween. Best, almost all of them are on sale right now. –Liz This set...

A monkey of a lovey

Finding the perfect lovey can be a daunting task. Before your baby is born, you buy a bunch of different types and hope that one of them becomes “the one.” The issue may be solved with this cool new toy/blanket combo. Drool Monkey Organics knows that babies and children like the dual function of their soft, luxurious, organic teething lovey–kids can hold onto the toy and soothe themselves with the cotton blanket at the same time. But what sets this brand apart is that the design is so clean and simple. The stitching gives it the perfect texture, and...

7 of the best toys for the car (and books and games too!)

We’re about to head on one of our annual summer road trips, which means packing plenty of toys for the car. We try to avoid the DVD–and generally succeed if we’ve planned ahead. Here, some of my favorite toys for the car for toddlers and bigger kids, for when you’re tired of I Spy, and need a little quiet time in the front seat. Best of all, none of them beep or boop or require 18 AAA batteries. The only noises you’ll hear in the back are your happily entertained kids. At least until the next “I have to...

Fake a tan while protecting yourself from a real one

Just because I want to avoid the sun, doesn’t mean I want to spend my summer looking like a ghost. I know I’m not alone, which is why self-tanners have become so popular. The new SPF 20 Gradual Self Tanning Sunscreen Mousse from Supergoop leaves an ever-so-slight kiss of golden color while saving your skin from sun damage. Pretty genius. Summer sights from your child’s room, even with the blinds down.

Every summer for the past few years, my entire family makes a pilgrimage to the Jersey shore for a week of pure old fashioned beach and boardwalk fun. I spend the other 51 weeks of the year making solo trips to the beach… in my head. But thanks to Meg Venter and her SUN-drenched photography series, I now have a little help getting there. A short pass through the September Wren Etsy gallery and you’ll be wishing you had a brand new beach house to adorn the walls with the entire collection. In reality, I am thinking a few...

Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure – yes, it’s all that

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I take my Disneyland fix quite seriously and I love Mickey Mouse. So, you can only imagine my excitement when I was invited to check out the grand opening of the new Cars Land area of Disney’s California Adventure. I must admit, my expectations were high. Sky high, actually. And let me tell you, Pixar delivers. Imagine that you are sitting down with your wee ones watching Lightning McQueen on the big screen. Now picture yourself walking through the flat screen TV into that world–that’s truly what Cars Land is. Radiator...

Pixar’s Brave review – A princess movie without a handsome prince

It’s kind of hard to believe that Disney produced the wonderful new “princess” movie Brave. After all, there’s no handsome prince, no fantasy dance scene in a sweeping gown, and no dead mother. What there is is a strong (super strong) female lead, and a lot of big bears. Also, boys will like it too. Seriously. My girls, 5 and almost 7, simply adored Brave and so did their mama. It’s beautifully produced, funny on both a kids’ and an adult level–something John Lasseter is pretty awesome at–and dramatic enough to keep you interested right through the very end....

The Medik8 spa skincare system – two reviews, two kinds of skin, all kinds of wonderful

You know that feeling, that smell, those results (!!) of the skincare products from a really high-end spa? That’s just what we were hoping for when we tried out the Medik8 skincare line. But we had a few questions–what kind of skin is it good for? Can we get the same results using it ourselves without a cosmetology degree? And of course, is it worth the splurge? So we put it to the test with both Delilah and Liz, two different women with two very different skincare challenges. Pretty interesting to see where they came out! Delilah’s Concerns: Very...

Puzzles lovely enough to frame.

Puzzles are the new family time favorite of our preschooler who is outgrowing her wooden pegged farm animals for more complex designs. I am happy to indulge her, but I refuse to throw down any more money on unimaginative cartoon character puzzles. I think puzzles can be considered more like an artform and not junky space-eaters. (In my world of apartment living, every inch counts).   I am so glad we found the gorgeous artistic puzzles from artist Sarah Nicholas Williams of Radish Moon. Her dreamy designs instill a feeling of childhood whimsy and backyard imagination that I welcome with open arms. The...
