If the living is easy in the summertime, autumn calls for a bit more sophistication in the nail polish department. I’m pretty low-maintenance with my beauty routine, but in the fall I make a weekly effort with my manicure. And my favorite colors for the fall are as cozy as the sweaters we’re snuggling up in — a mix of dark, metallic and antique, in 3 shades of grey and gorgeous pink.

Heavy metal manicure
Deep down, I feel like a rocker chick. Sure, I live in the ‘burbs and do carpools, but that doesn’t mean I can’t rock a little bit of chrome on my tips. I’m loving the new No Place Like Chrome polish from nail-salon queen Essie. It screams backstage pass, no?

Grey goes edgy
Let’s face it, Chanel really nailed style with their inky Vamp shade in the 90s. I still remember my first manicure with Vamp as a college undergrad, like it was yesterday. This season, celebrity manicurist Jin Soon captures that edgy cool factor with her collaboration with fashion label Tibi. My favorite color is Mica, an iridescent silver grey that looks super rich on the nails. Also new this season: Jin Soon introduced a cool Matte Maker Top Coat, which makes your nails…you guessed it, matte. And marvelous.

Pink that’s not too pretty
I have two boys, so the thought of any color of clothing or makeup that is too garishly girly isn’t my speed. On the other hand, I do love me a nice pretty manicure in the right shade of pink. The perfect answer for fall lies in the new dusty rose shade of Social Butterfly from Rococo Nail Apparel. It’s got a vintage vibe, yet goes nowhere close to the icky pink territory. Melissa
