The Verve Pipe’s Are We There Yet? has indeed arrived

After listening to indie-rockers The Verve Pipe’s debut kids’ CD, A Family Album, a while back, I remember hoping they’d be back soon with more of their rockin’ charm. Fortunately, The Verve Pipe has decided to splash around in the kindie pool again, and their second release is full of even more cool tunes with clever, funny lyrics for your elementary-school aged kids. And you won’t have to worry about them sharing these lyrics on the playground. The Verve Pipe’s Are We There Yet? is filled with fast-paced, multi-layered songs, peppered with a latin, country, and blues beats. They really...

Birthday parties every weekend? You’ll want to have these cards up your sleeve.

My daughter has been prancing around the house lately claiming she’s the Princess of Parties. She’s been invited to a bazillion birthday parties since school started and it’s clearly going to her head. I generally try to get my kids to make their own cards for their friends, but with all the parties, it’s a bit of a sweatshop around here. So the Princess of Parties and I are opting for some top-notch help.         The amazing greeting cards from Dear Hancock Paper Goods are fantastic to keep on hand. Each one is lovelier than the next. I swear,...

It’s an accent piece, not a costume.  Here, 9 of my favorite spiky baubles that you mayyyyy even see gracing the necks and earlobes of our own staff these days. –Liz   Leather and Linen Necklace ($64, Poketo)Scared of accidentally stabbing the baby? Belts little kids can do by themselves. Whoo!

We discovered mom-run Myself Belts back in 2006 (wow), and it’s awesome to see how they’ve grown. They make a brilliant line of first belts for toddlers, especially during the potty training months. You know what I’m talking about. And now there are some smart new styles for fall. If you’re not familiar with the concept, these are more than just a piece of fabric with some Velcro at the end; they snap around the first belt loop to secure themselves to the pants (no belt ends in the toilet, whoo!) and then it’s easy for kids to string...

How to wear the Pantone colors of the season: Mykonos Blue and Turbulence Grey

I always get a little fashion geeky about Pantone’s colors of the year, and I’m so glad to see that the Pantone colors of Fall 2013 are eminently wearable. Or, most of them are. Two of my favorites, which also go great together, are the soothing Mykonos Blue, and Turbulence Grey, which is described as a dark, mercurial grey, and a really nice neutral alternative to black. Designer Kelly Wearstler‘s concept drawing here is a gorgeous example of them together, and here I’ve rounded up some other favorite pieces to help you put them to work. –Liz   1....

Custom rock star backpacks. Like any kid would turn that down?

Two years in a row, I fell prey to a starry-eyed child who’d discovered the World’s Most Perfect Backpack while shopping for school supplies. By October, it had a broken zipper, ripped netting, and a bum wheel. Nice. This year I wised up and found a personalized backpack that’s built to last but still respects her rock-star style. And now we’re both happy. And that really rocks. Our pals at Psychobaby really rock at making unique, custom apparel and accessories with a wholesome but slightly punky style, and these personalized backpacks are a logical progression for big kids. The...

Understanding your baby’s cries with a super cute tee

Recently there have been some strange new products out there that purport to help you understand your baby’s various cries. Well, save your money. Turns out this adorable elbow-patch baby tee is all you need. The wahhh baby shirt at Zara spells it all out for you in cozy 100% cotton: One wahhh means yes; two wahhhs mean maybe. And you thought parenting was hard. Wait, what’s Babyspeak for “no,” you ask? No need for a translation. When he spits an entire mouthful of strained whatever all over that adorable tee, you’ll know. –Liz The wahhh baby shirt at Zara US makes a great baby gift for under...

3 of the best quick, before-school makeup tips from Bobbi Brown

It’s been two weeks since school started and to say that I’ve been leaving the house for drop-off looking halfway decent would be very generous. I haven’t quite figured out the whole three-minute beauty routine, so thankfully I have some tips and great products from Bobbi Brown to help me get it down.  I asked the talented Kim Soane, the director of global artistry at Bobbi Brown, for great beauty tips for women in a hurry. She’s a mom herself so she totally gets it. If you can only do three things, here are her busy morning pointers for...

Personalized books for kids that will blow their minds. And yours.

We’ve looked at many personalized books for kids over the years. Some are really lovely; others, not so much. Now there’s one more to add to the lovely column, but with an extra-special touch that makes it way more impressive than any I’ve seen. The difference between the Lost My Name Books and others that simply incorporate your child’s name or details about them is that the entire story is customized–not just a few name mentions scattered about here and there. That means every single book is completely different–what a genius gift if you have more than one child...

Jewelry for a second-time mom: Love plus love.

Before I had kids, when I used to see love necklaces like these, I found them a little juvenile, to be honest. But once I became a mom I started to see this kind of jewelry in a whole new light.   While okay, it is kind of adorable to add your initial plus that of your sweetheart on the custom love necklaces from Olive Yew, I think it would also make a really cool, affordable gift for a second-time mom. I would love to have my two girls’ initials around my neck connected by the ampersand. Great, right? That is,...

Hot trend alert: boots for kids, from cowboy to motorcycle

I have a tween daughter (and it’s hard even saying that) who is shoe crazy. Clearly she takes after her mama that way. But I’ve learned if I get her cheap shoes, they hardly last through fall, let alone the school year. One of the few brands that’s really done right by us is Umi, which are definitely a splurge, but I know get passed down to her sister too. In fact, we bought these suede kids’ loafers two years ago, and after two years and two girls and about a thousand trips to the playground, we only just had to retire...

Cozy Classics reinvent board books. And classics. And totally dark baby gifts.

When I think of the perfect book gift for a brand new baby, Les Miserables doesn’t exactly spring to mind. Or does it? If you’ve got a literary family–or a lit lover raising the next generation of lit lovers–the Cozy Classics board books from Holman and Jack Wang may be the perfect, vaguely irreverent, and super erudite baby gift. There are a Pride and Prejudice board book and an Emma board book should you want something a little light–and that’s as light as they go. Other titles include War and Peace, Moby Dick, and, if you dare, Les Miserables. The needle felted photography that illustrates each page is...
