Duck, duck…fruit! Healthy all-natural snacks for little ones

It’s finally here, the time when your sweet, drooly, dribbly little baby is ready to get down with some solids.   You go to the supermarket and marvel at the huge selection of options, scratching your head as you read the ingredients, known and unknown. When it comes to choosing toddler and kid snacks, it’s not as simple as it should be. Sure, those gummies may be organic, but they are still gummies. And fruit’s the best snack out there, but it’s not always the most portable or sustainable. Well, thank goodness for men of action, like NYC-based dad...

Finally, a rear-facing car seat that won’t squish your toddler’s legs

Thanks to the American Academy of Pediatrics’s well-intentioned rule that babies under the age of two should remain in rear-facing car seats, there’s plenty of cranky, uncomfortable toddlers out there, whining in backseats across the land. Luckily I came across a very smart rear-facing car seat for ages newborn to 2, so my growing, grumpy toddler boy can finally get back to chillaxing and watching the rear-view world go by. The Graco SnugRide Click Connect 40 car seat is the first car seat that comfortably accommodates children up to 40 pounds. The secret is in the base of the...

The most gorgeous nursery artwork that looks nothing of the sort

There are so many options for decorating your new baby’s nursery walls with gorgeous artwork, from custom posters to colorful growth charts to giant wall decals. And now I’ve just found another amazingly creative option that you have to see to believe. Marcelle Crosby’s Folded Paper Dresses look like large-scale origami pieces made of folded maps and other cool-looking printed paper. Measuring about 17 inches in length, I would’ve loved to hang the Miss Paris Pink dress in my daughter’s nursery. It would have had me dreaming of crepes and the Louvre during those 3AM nursing sessions. If you’re...

From Brooklyn, with love

I am an advocate for shopping online. As a mom, I rarely have time to visit the mall or shop at my favorite local stores. So it’s always a treat for me to come across new sites with an effortless style that’s as fun to browse as it is to actually shop. Brooklyn Makers is one of those sites. Brooklyn Makers offers a beautifully curated selection of clothes for boys and girls, creative and educational toys (like these cute ABC peg dolls, seen above), sweet hats and hair accessories. You will also find cool stuff for grownups. And if...

The Dot Girl First Period Kit: a lifesaver for moms of tween girls

Even though my oldest daughter is still a little young for the official period talk, that doesn’t mean I’m not prepared. In fact, I still have the Original Dot Girl First Period Kit we discovered a few years ago bookmarked on my computer for when the time comes. As it turns out, they just recently updated the already useful kit to make it an even better tool for parents with tween girls, which I (gulp) will soon be. The new and improved Dot Girl First Period Kit still contains everything it had before that I appreciated, but now comes...

Instagram photo albums for those photos worth saving somewhere besides your phone

You know Instagram and Hipstamatic have gone mainstream when suddenly there’s a rash of square photo frames and photo books popping up on the market, one more lovely than the next. And now I’m so thrilled to see that CMP favorite Rag & Bone Bindery has just served up their own gorgeous offerings as well.   Aptly named InstaBooks, these mini, accordion-style square brag books blend old and new just beautifully. They are as artfully handmade as their other albums (as brides-a-plenty know), with your choice of more than two dozen clothbound covers from elegant linens to pretty florals and several...

Born to craft: two amazing artists not yet old enough to drive

We love finding new crafters and artists, especially when they’re just getting started. And no one seems to define that better than two talents we’ve just found–especially considering they haven’t even hit their mid-teens yet. Yes, really.   Amelia (top left) is the 13 year-old daughter of Anna Fader of Mommy Poppins fame. Her Jumprings and Jellybeans blog features tutorials for many of the crafts (mostly jewelry but also some watercolor and paper crafts) that she’s making, all presented with such a charming, wry tone. A natural blogger! An excerpt for a make-your-own button tutorial intro: I keep seeing...

Wonderful new personalized books for kids: If it’s in print, it must be true…I love you!

Did you know that it only takes three little words to fill an entire book? At least in this case. We have long been fans of Paper Hat Press and their groovy personalized books for kids, but it’s their latest and greatest that has us head over heels. The I Love You personalized book is a very sweet love story gorgeously illustrated by the super talented Paper Hat Press designer Micha Player. The book is meant to be a declaration of love from parent/grandparent/caregiver to child, but what will really make it the new favorite read is the detail that the clever...

Dino-mite dinosaur decals for your wall

Dinosaurs: they’re timeless, they’re great for both boys and girls, and now they can liven up a child’s room without ruining the walls. We’re digging these three new sets of decals that can turn any kid’s cave into a strange new world. Oh, and one includes Godzilla. We’re big fans of the mod, hip collaboration between Blik wall decals and Babybot design, which is why we just had to show you their three newest dinosaur creations. There’s the straight-up dino collection of Strange New World. And then you can add the slightlier wackier (and more purple!) creatures of Crash...

Congrats to the Oscars 2013 best animated short: Paperman

Watching the 2013 Academy Awards last night, I was feeling bad about seeing a big fat zero of the nine Best Picture Oscar-nominated films, though I admit that after reading Liz’s amazing Les Miserables review, it was almost like seeing it myself. But hey, I did see the Best Animated Feature winner Brave and now also the Best Animated Short winner Paperman, which you can catch for free on Hulu. It’s a such a sweet film and certainly worth sparing seven minutes to watch. Congrats to them, and all the Oscar winners! -Kristen Looking for more of our movie...

Team Star Wars or Doctor Who? Crocheted hats for little geeks in training

What can we say? We heart these adorable crocheted hats, which are just as good for fighting crime in the playroom as they are for keeping little ears warm on Hoth. Our pals at Geekling have a new line for babies and kids: geeky crocheted hats. [Updated link] They’re beautifully handmade in soft, stretchy cotton yarn and available in four sizes from newborn up to XL (which supposedly fits ages 3 to 8). But here’s a secret: that Leia hat fits me just fine, and my head is by no means small. I know what I’m wearing on May the...

Home is where you hang your hat on a bunny

Need to get those coats off the floor? The bunny can help! In fact, there’s an entire menagerie ready to help keep things tidy. The source for these adorable coat hooks is Pomme, the superhip kids’ outpost in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Whether you go with the rabbit, cat, frog, or cow, each coathanger is about eight inches tall and four inches wide and made of enamel-coated metal with four round hooks. And each one looks just as trustworthy and earnest as the last. We adore these fine fellows, but keep in mind that while each coat hook is only $12,...

Awesome street clothes. Sesame Street, to be exact.

Seeing as my Christmas card this year was a photograph of me with an 8-foot Cookie Monster (yeah, my kids are in there, too, somewhere), I make no secret of my undying affection for the gang on the street called Sesame. So I’m loving an adorable T-shirt from perennial CMP favorite Threadless, and if you’re a Sesame Street lover, I think you will too.     This cream-colored 100% cotton Sesame Street tee from artist Glen Brogan via the Threadless Sesame Street T-Shirt Design Challenge which we covered has a cool retro feel and a lively spirit as fun as the...

Paper or polka dot? Personalized pendants with irresistible charm

It’s always a red-letter day when you’re wearing or gifting something beautiful and handmade. You’ll love what one of our favorite Etsy artisans has up her (polka-dotted) sleeve. We’ve long been fans of the sweet baby gifts and lovely embroidered jewelry by Merriweather Council on Etsy, and we adore the most recent twist on the line: patterned fabrics. Those juicy polka dots are extra sweet. And the lined notebook paper fabric would make an especially lovely gift for a favorite teacher without screaming, “Here’s another apple!” There are tons of personalization options, including pendant shape, letter, upper or lower case, and...

How to decorate with washi tape, without the design degree

I’ve recently found myself in possession of some washi tape, thanks to a few leftover Martha Stewart craft supplies at our recent Sealed With Love Valentine’s party. Not being the crafty mama that a lot of you are (uh, decoupaging my Scotch tape dispenser is not quite high on my to-do list), I’m not exactly bursting with ideas for how to use them. And then I saw this. I love this simple, decorative way to put pretty tapes to non-permanent use: it’s as simple as creating some basic, angular little houses and taping them up over a child’s desk,...
