How to build your own monster trucks without having mastered pre-calc

All of my kids–yes, even the girls–love to play with toy cars, but there’s only so much you can do with them, right? That’s why I’m in love with this new line from Manhattan Toy that lets them unleash their creativity on all things four wheeled. The new MOTORWORKS line of cars and trucks has been in heavy play rotation around my house, and I’m not surprised considering it gives kids the opportunity to build and create the vehicles they’ll race on your kitchen floor (or is that just my house?). The cars and trucks like the Monster Truck...

Lisa Loeb’s kids’ music gets you ready to move and shake. (Yes, you too.)

I’ve been a fan of Lisa Loeb’s voice ever since her days singing 90s hit Stay, but I really fell in love with her when she crooned the lovely, mellow Catch the Moon album for babes with Elizabeth Mitchell. Now Lisa’s back with a bunch of kids’ songs that aren’t made for napping, but for getting up and moving. And shaking. And yes, dancing. Get those smartphone video cams ready. Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ & Shakin’ includes ten tunes for doing just that. Half of the songs are originals like Turn it Down (The Air Band Song) that’ll...

An end of year teacher gift for the teacher with the biggest heart

In the south, your kids may already already be out of school (and you parents scampering for activities to keep them occupied), but up where I live we still have an entire month left. That also means, a whole month left to think of thoughtful teacher gifts. Looking at Donors Choose this week, I’m so thrilled to see a donation category dedicated just for schools in Moore, Oklahoma that need rebuilding after the recent tornado. Making a donation to the Donors Choose fund to help Moore, OK Schools in a teacher’s name is such a special gift. This is...

Juuuuust right: baby bottles go thermal

Oh, the bottle stage. I remember jiggling wailing, hungry babies whose only goal in life was to get some warm milk, and those minutes of waiting for bottles to warm would seem like hours. This time around, I’ve discovered a fantastic alternative to those dreaded bottle-warming-minutes. The organicKidz thermal baby bottles not only feature great designs, they keep liquids cold or hot for up to six hours. Genius! Now I did test that claim and found it to be mostly true, although it really worked best if the liquid was either super cold or super hot to start with...

Gorgeous waterproof picnic blankets: if only they kept the rain away too.

Even though it’s not quite summer feeling everywhere just yet, it’s the official start of summer, which means picnics. Yay! We recently featured this post with our top picnic tips for parents with new babies, and number one: Use a waterproof blanket. Fortunately, we found a great Etsy shop selling a ton of them.   Sewn Natural makes lovely handmade blankets of all kinds, but it’s the thoughtfully-designed waterproof picnic blankets I’m really digging right now. In polka dots, chevrons (of course), traditional checks and even Marimekko fabrics, they all roll-up into a super convenient 14″ roll and button closed. They’re...

Chocolate whaaat? Kids’ vitamins just got awesomer.

I grew up eating the vitamins of a certain prehistoric cartoon and turned out pretty okay. Still, now that I’m a mom, I’d love for my own kids’ vitamins to be a bit more naturally sourced. And maybe not so, well, chalky. Yum-V’s Multi-Vitamin Jellies are totally delicious and soft, packed with good stuff and not the artificial ick. They get their softer chewiness from pectin, not gelatin, which makes them not quite as sticky on the teeth–something my forever-losing-a-tooth grade-schooler really appreciates. Now, no artificial colors means your brain may need a second to realize that the happy...

Summer camp backpacks with serious standout style

The first summer I sent my son to day camp, I tried to cram his lunch, towel, bathing suit, rain jacket, and various other doodads into his cute little preschool backpack. Epic mommy fail. This summer, we are ready with a standout backpack. It’s got plenty of room for camp gear, all with a personality that really pops. We’ve been big fans of MadPax ever since their Spiketus Rex backpacks hit the scene. My son adores his big red BUBBLE pack, which always gets a ton of comments wherever he goes.  Their latest creation, the MadPax BLOK, has a...
