Life is a colander of cherries

We’ve officially entered hostess gift season, which happens to coincide with fresh produce season season. Which gives me an awesome idea.   Visit Ross Lab on Etsy for this gorgeous made-to-order, handmade ceramic berry colander and then hit your local farmer’s market or you know, Whole Foods, for the proverbial (and actual) bowl full of cherries. There are also lovely salt and pepper cellars, coffee mugs, and a really pretty, rustic sugar/creamer set. Just present with artisanal salts; the mugs with some good coffee and so on. It just amps up the gift that much more.   It’s such...

A fun numbers book for your happy little punks and hipsters in training

With their penchant for throwing things, screeching at high decibels, and staying up way past bedtime, toddlers are naturally great punk rockers. But since they still need their parents to tuck them in at night, here’s a great bedtime story that will fill their heads with visions of fun music and friends (not anarchy) as they drop off to sleep. They can save the anarchy for when you try to serve mashed peas again. Happy Punks 1 2 3: A Counting Story runs up the numbers from 1 to 12 in a charming story about friends getting together for...

As much as I love the ease of dropping an email to friends to invite them over for a summer BBQ or pool day, there’s something special about sending invitations the old-fashioned way.   These DIY printable party invitations from Girl in Gear Studio make sending real paper invitations super easy, and not to mention, stylish. Geeky cookie cutters from Game of Thrones, Dr Who, and more. Because who doesn’t want to eat Jamie Lannister’s hand? (Eh, forget we said that.)

NASA recently announced a 3D printer concept that could potentially cure world hunger. We’re not there yet, but here’s a cool way to use 3D printers to make food more fun. And more geeky. Introducing Tyrion Lannister, the cookie. WarpZone Prints is an ever-evolving Etsy shop by a geeky mom of two, producing one-of-a-kind cookie cutter designs to showcase your favorite geeky and otherwise fun pop culture references, including Doctor Who, My Neighbor Totoro, My Little Pony, Mario Brothers, Monty Python, and many other fandoms.  You won’t want to miss the chance to eat your favorite characters considering the results...

Rock n roll tees for kids so authentic, you can almost smell the overpriced concert beer on them.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a way of taking me back in time. As a parent, I play Under the Bridge for my kids and encourage them to appreciate how the music affects them. Cooler still, Flea, RHCP’s bassist, is a big supporter of children in the arts and a regular in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. So I’m digging this new collaboration for kids between classic bands and classic style, courtesy of a very surprising source. At J Crew, of all places, you’ll find a very cool selection of rock n roll tees for kids in...

Personalized puzzles that make perfect birthday gifts. Maybe not just for kids.

I just finished spring cleaning my kids’ bedrooms and, while I was able to part with many things, I held onto almost anything that had been personalized with their names. If you too find that personalized gifts hold a special place in your heart, then you won’t be puzzled by my enthusiasm for something beautifully made–yet affordable–that could become a treasured plaything to hang onto for a long time. We’ve loved TinyMe’s colorful personalized labels, and we’re also smitten by their adorable wooden jigsaw puzzles that come in a huge array of styles and colors. The lovely muted color...

Monsters University Review: You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll say, wait…was that a Carrie reference?

It’s an interesting thing, settling into a seat in a theater filled with squirmy, popcorn butter-fingered children for a G-rated movie, knowing that half the references will be to movies like Animal House,  Revenge of the Nerds and Back to School. And yet that’s exactly what Monsters U is: a witty, irreverent, sweet and frequently hilarious take on the classic college comedy. Only, you know. Animated. By Pixar. With monsters. But is it right for your kids? To be sure, my children, 6 and 8, adored Monsters University. And they’re not even super familiar with the original Monsters Inc.,...
