How to throw a camp-themed party. (Cheaper than buying all those uniforms)

Sometimes kids with summer birthdays (ahem–mine) feel a little ripped off because their friends are out of town. I love the idea of a summer camp themed party right in your own local park or backyard. It’s a great way to make the party special, even with a smaller group. Here are lots of fun ideas to help.   Camp Party Themed Invitations and Printables This birthday camp invitation printable (above) at Etsy’s Cyan and Sepia is just so fun. They’ll customize all the information for you on the gorgeous vintage design, then you just print and send. ($18 including customization)...

Muppets go modern with the coolest prints for your nursery

Of all my parenting achievements, I’m particularly proud that I’ve passed on a love for The Muppets to my own three kids. And now that they carry their own torch for Kermit, Beaker, and Fozzie Bear, I think they’ll love decorating their rooms with some very cool, very style-forward prints of the gang. Designed by London’s The Retro Inc, our iconic Muppets friends have gone through a mod makeover of sorts, and I just love the results. Grab a trio of your favorite characters for only $10, and the 5×7″ prints will be shipped to you. Or, if you can’t...

Mixing up colors with Martha Stewart mixing bowls

Last year, we got a set of Martha Stewart ice cream bowls that have become favorites with my kids, whether they’re holding ice cream, peanut butter for dipping carrot sticks, or maple syrup in the morning. So I’m excited to see now she’s added to the collection with a beautiful set of mixing bowls. The Martha Stewart mixing bowls are so gorgeous, aren’t they? They would get so much use at our place, from mixing up pancake batter to serving kettle corn on movie nights. I especially love that they’re light enough that kids can lift them themselves (not...

Can’t stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen with 8 of the best summer BBQ recipes, beyond burgers

My first reaction to the wicked hot summer heat was to turn off the oven in favor of these no-bake desserts. Now, midway through the season, I’m turning away from my stove all together and opting instead for some of the very best, simply grilled, summer BBQ recipes. These eight dishes are great for grilling in the park or on the beach, at a BBQ with friends, or when you just need to whip up a quick summer dinner (and dessert!) away from the heat of the kitchen. Whew. This Honey Chipotle BBQ Chicken (above) from Feasting at Home? I want...

Tips for taking the first family photos with baby: A celebration of motherhood firsts

This post is part of a monthly series with our Baby Shower Gift Guide sponsor, babyGap celebrating motherhood firsts. We hope you enjoy our tips! Great close-up of baby June Blair with her older sister, via Gabrielle Blair of Design Mom. We all remember that first big gathering with a humongo group of relatives to meet the baby for the first time. For some people it’s in the hospital but for others of us, it’s a big party or even a trip, where you can count on dozens of hands begging for turns with the newest members of the...

You can finally stop threatening to destroy whoever wakes the baby.

You know how it goes. You spend an hour rocking the baby to sleep, carefully tiptoe to the crib, nail the arm-to-mattress transfer, and slip out the door. You’re home free. You’re almost downstairs to the brownies, wine, and Hannibal. And then some horrible monster comes home and closes a door, and WHAMMO. Tears–until now. The Latchy Catchy is a nifty little device that slips over your doorknobs to ensure that all closing doors are silent, happy, friendly closing doors. It’s thick enough to keep the door tightly shut and fits all door shapes and sizes–even French or lever...

LEGO: The Art of the Brick. And by art, we mean whoa.

And here I get all excited when my six-year-old puts together a LEGO Lord of the Rings set and only asks for my help twice. Recently opened, artist Nathan Sawaya’s solo show Art of the Brick features unbelievable creations all created out of LEGOS. If you happen to be a New Yorker or just visiting my fair city any time through the fall, this looks like one to take the kids to for sure.   They may not get the references to the Winged Victory, Girl with the Pearl Earring, or Edvard Munch’s Scream, but I’m sure their minds...

Snazzy handcrafted baby shoes that really steal the show

If the baby I’m having next month is anything like me, the kid will appreciate a really good pair of shoes. (I’ve already passed that gene onto my daughter, who clamors for any beautiful pair of heels she sees.) I find most people focus on the baby clothes, but adorable shoes really make the outfit. And in the case of this Etsy shop I discovered? That cute romper set from Grandma might go unnoticed if Baby is wearing these. Sorry, Grandma! Warning: Visiting the Ajalor shop on Etsy will either make you want to have another baby stat, or you’ll...
