The Ralph Lauren Kids fashion show: Fall fashion inspiration galore

featured partner With back to school officially here and the cooler climes headed our way, we’re excited to be one of the first to share the video of the Ralph Lauren Kids fall fashion show which launched today. Can you say adorable? Now you get to see what some of our favorite celeb moms, like Jessica Alba, Ali Wentworth, and Edie Falco (love them!) saw when they were there with their own kids at the show last month, and get some inspiration for your own fall shopping as well.   Personally, we’re loving some of the Downton Abbey inspiration, and the holiday styles–so ridiculously photo worthy. Also keep an eye out for our favorites like the fun vest look around :25, the colorful dress with striped socks and patterned sneakers at :58, and the very cool motorcycle inspired jacket at 1:26. Because hey, your kid doesn’t even have to be a child model to wear it. Take a peek for yourself and see what catches your eye. You are amazing, beautiful and strong. Just ask your socks.

Heaven knows we’ve featured plenty of tees and artwork featuring empowering messages for kids. Now we’re adding socks to the lineup.  I really like the premise behind the Notes to Self Socks founded by mom Laura Schmidt. They offer simple notes of affirmation that kids will see first thing in the morning, last thing when they go to bed, and if they’re my kids, throughout the day when they are ripping off their socks to do cartwheels in the living room. They’re not super cheap, so I don’t think you’ll stock your whole sock drawer with them, but as a cool...

6 simple, delicious dinners for hectic back to school schedules

Now that we’ve covered awesome school lunch resources and simple lunch ideas–it’s time to tackle dinner recipes for the kids. Here are six fairly fast dinner recipes sure to fit into your back-to-school routine, no matter how hectic. These dinners are a little different and a lot delicious. No spaghetti here. –Stacie  I’m obsessed with this Asian Salmon Bowl with Lime Drizzle (above) from Epicurious and so is my family. It’s healthy and ridiculously delicious–even my picky 3 1/2 year old digs this tangy, garlicky dish. Best of all, it takes about 30 minutes to make and can be served in a single...

The Best Toys for Kids winners of 2013: We have to agree.

featured partner If you’re looking for a list of the Best Toys for Kids, we’ve found a great one featuring tons of the smaller brands we love, curated by the indie retailers who actually sell them and interact with parents and other customers day to day. In fact, I’m really excited to be working with ASTRA, the American Specialty Toy Retailers Association, which is the nonprofit that supports those community retailers, bookstores, and smaller children’s toy brands. I’ve always had a heart for mom-and-pop stores that are such an important part of their communities, like the toy shop 3...

P’kolino’s new Monster Storage Bins are coming to eat your kids’ stuff

Having a monster in his room is something my son has worried about since he was old enough to speak. But, I think he’d be more relaxed about welcoming one into his bedroom if it were super helpful, kind of silly looking, and kept his toys safely tucked away while he slept…with the closet light on, of course. Created by long-time Cool Mom Picks favorite P’kolino, their new Monster Storage Bins are ready to gobble up all the toys, stuffed animals, and trinkets that appear in my kids’ rooms seemingly overnight. Sturdy rope “arms” make it easy to drag...

Calling all runners! Team Baby Buggy needs you for NYC Marathon 2013

We’ve been huge supporters of the amazing charity Baby Buggy since we discovered them in 2011, and we’re always ready to help spread the word about the wonderful services they provide. They’ve got a huge challenge ahead of them this fall, and we’d be thrilled if any of our runners, er, readers would like to join their NYC Marathon team. The Baby Buggy 2013 ING NYC Marathon team, that is. They’ve got a few more spots to fill between now and September 15. (The race isn’t until November 4. Plenty of time to train!) Entries in this race are...

Cooler than Wonder Woman’s bracelet: Wonder Woman’s ring

I don’t know too many women who don’t have a little space in their hearts for Wonder Woman, whether it’s the original DC comic, the awesomely campy Lynda Carter TV series, or just the fantasy of having an alter-ego superhero. So I am kind of geeking out over this jewelry that pays homage to her and other DC Comics female characters.  I discovered nOir Jewelry when I saw some of their beautiful work on Fab, and clicked over to the site. With such fun, edgy, room-stopping pieces, it’s no wonder celebs like Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Nicki Minaj and and Rihanna are among their...

Best disappearing act ever? Wash-away labels

We have a saying in our family: sticky is icky. It applies to gooey hands and chunks of granola bar in the car, but it also applies to labels. I hate scraping sticky sticker residue off anything. Ever. Which is why these labels are so cool. When you’re done with them, they literally disappear. Magic…or pretty darn close. When I heard about the new Wash Aways from Mabel’s Labels, I was highly skeptical. Write on the label, peel it off, stick it on…then wash it away with water? No way. So I tried it. Several times. And the dang things...

Bold graphic tees to empower your favorite girl this fall

I love the song Brave by Sara Bareilles. Seriously, how often do our daughters hear music on the radio that encourages them to be bold and smart and to speak their minds? Same goes with girls’ clothes and their messages. If you’re still annoyed at that popular brand’s glittery “I’m too pretty to do homework” shirt or the doll that proclaimed “math is hard!” instead try one of these inspiring tees to remind your daughter that real Girl Power never goes out of style. I love the super stylish cotton tees from Peek–printed in lush full color on front and back....

The coolest printable lunchbox notes: The sweetest thing in their lunch box won’t be cookies

I still remember opening up my lunch each school day and looking for something sweet from my mom. While nothing could beat a handful of chocolate kisses or a few homemade cookies, a “sweet” note tucked in between the sandwich and apple often did the trick. That’s why I’ve rounded up a bunch of cool printable lunchbox notes–and okay, a couple that you can purchase but they were too great not to share. They’re so easy to include on those days when you think your kids could use a little treat, minus the sugar   Great for hanging off...

Sweet hair accessories to get girls 15% more likely to brush their hair without being asked

After a summer of wild and crazy hair (hey, that’s what summer’s for, right?) it’s been a little tough getting my girls back in the groove of sleek ponytails and neat hairbands for schools. To say nothing of those brushes that could use a workout. But there’s nothing like a cute new hairband or clip to get them excited to look like they didn’t just roll out of bed. The hair accessories from Adelaide NYC are clever, creative, colorful, and built to last. They’re made from acrylic, not felt or ribbon, and the construction is reassuring because they’re not your average...

DIY: Cute napmat for preschoolers. No guarantees if it will actually get them to sleep.

Whether or not your preschooler actually sleeps during naptime, their teachers will attempt to make such a thing happen. (My kids? Never.) If you have sewing skills, there’s something really sweet about making your own napmat for little student so they feel a piece of you with them when they’re away from home.  I am really taken with this tutorial at one of my favorite crafty sites, The Purl Bee, for a DIY nap mat for children. It’s actually got a pillow and light blanket built right in, and only uses two (large) pieces of fabric–in this case, a soft...

Super cool wall hooks that bring the outdoors in

See ya, summer chaos. It’s time to get organized–with some fun style too. The modern Twiggy Hooks from StudioLiscious on Etsy are a pretty twist on your basic wall hook. Each one is made by hand in Ontario using only birch plywood and tung oil. (Not to be confused with tongue oil. That would be gross.) Whether you’re hanging a forest of necklaces or a tree full of keys, we love the clean, modern lines. One teensy drawback? There are two holes on back for mounting, but the hooks don’t come with mounting hardware. I’d recommend stopping by your local...
