High-waisted bikinis are trending in a big way this summer for women, and we’re loving the fun retro vibe that has us channeling our inner Brigitte Bardot. (In our dreams, we know.) Those of us with less-than-flat abs are excited for the extra forgiveness that comes with the coverage, and many of these styles have nice ruching to hide that donut (or three) that we may sometimes sneak in after the kids have gone to bed. It’s also a great option for women with longer torsos, as it makes your core look not quite so long.

One tip for this trend: some designers are going pretty far with retro theme and personally I’d rather not look like I stepped out of the cast of South Pacific. Instead, go for an updated, modern take on the ’50s look, like some of my favorites here:

The Mara Hoffman bandeau bikini top and high-waisted bikini bottom (at top) are so striking!  Not cheap compared with our other picks, but the laser-cut detailing is exquisite and the cut is really flattering.

Tulle high-waisted bikini from J Crew | Cool Mom Picks

This tulle high-waisted bikini from J.Crew doesn’t sit quite as high on the waist as some of the other styles we’ve seen–but then this model doesn’t quite need the coverage the way some of us do (ahem). We love this neutral color, but it comes in a few other bolder hues as well if your skin is more pale to begin with.

Mimi Hammer ultra high-waisted bikini | Cool Mom Picks

These ultra high-waisted bikini bottoms with matching bandeau top from Mimi Hammer on Etsy is a chic pick for summer pool parties, whether playdates of child or grown-up variety. It’s nearly a one-piece except for that sliver of ribcage showing—great for moms with a thin, athletic build. Just note that there’s zero support whatsoever in that top, so this one might be better for you smaller-chested mamas. Or those of you lucky enough to have a rack that still stays up by itself somehow.

Bellarosa high-waisted bikini by Seafolly | Cool Mom Picks

The Bellarosa high-waisted bikini by Seafolly picks up on the floral trend we’re loving this spring. Skip the international shipping fees from Australia and buy at ModCloth instead if they’ve got your size in stock.
