Those iconic handmade wooden crate and roller-skate-bottom scooters from the Great Depression have been retooled and re-imagined to form the fierce-looking Skate Crate, hopefully coming soon to a sidewalk near you. At least if you ask our kids.
Currently about halfway through its Kickstarter campaign, the Skate Crate combines the scrappy ingenuity of a previous era with 2014 technology and craftsmanship to make a sturdy ride-on toy for both little and big kids. Created by Blockhead Skateboards’ founder Dave Bergthold, it shows off some serious style with cool artwork, gorgeous wood construction, and smooth-rolling wheels that will get kids flying down the pavement.
I love that you’ve got options depending on just how much DIY you’d like to do with your Skate Crate. Purchase the ready-to-ride Skate version in The Flying Tiger, The Race Way, or The Sidewalk Screamer design, or grab the Racing Sticker Kit to customize your Skate Crate with its own number and stripes. True DIY’ers may love the DIY Design crate which allows you to spray paint, stencil, wood burn, or whatever-you-want onto your box, or the DIY Build which sends you everything unassembled and undesigned, so you can go to town–before your kids take over on their one-of-a-kind Skate Crate.
The Skate Crate campaign on Kickstarter has about two weeks left to reach its funding goal. Early supporters will find some very cool rewards like custom artwork or family bundles so that everyone can start riding together.
