If you’ve got big kids like mine who love to DIY, then you need to snatch up one of these KidKnits craft kits for kids that help give back to people in need.

Founded by 9-year old (yes, 9!) and avid knitter Ellie, KidKnits is a non-profit organization that helps families in Chile and Rwanda through the sale of hat craft kits. Each kit features everything you’ll need to make your own hat, including your color choice of hand-dyed yarn from the artisans in both countries the charity supports, as well as a round loom, hook, needle, and instructions, all packed in a colorful handmade cotton bag.

The KidKnits my doll and me craft kits for kids support families in need

The craft kits come in adult, kid, and baby sizes, as well as the “My doll and me” kits (above), which give you looms and yarn to make a hat for a child and a doll. And while your tween or teen could definitely do these (they aren’t really for little ones, but hey, you know your kids best), I’m actually thinking of getting my own crafty on and making one or two myself.

What I love most–along with the fact that this was all the brainchild of one inspiring 9-year old girl–is that you’re giving something that your own child (or someone else’s) can make herself, which is always welcome in the sea of toys and games under the tree, at least in our house. And in doing so, you’re helping families who need it most this holiday season, and every single day of the year.

You can purchase a KidKnits craft kit on their website. Head over to learn more about Ellie and the amazing work her organization is doing.
