Finding t-shirts I actually like for my boys has become something of a challenge. They gravitate between wanting to wear soccer jerseys or tees emblazoned with their favorite superhero on their chests. I pick and choose my battles, so I usually let them head off to school with their choice. I finally found a line of t-shirts that both my sons and I adore equally as much. Warrior Poet Clothing is a terrific collection of cool clothes for boys including graphic t-shirts and hoodies that help promote a larger message of courage. My older son, the fledgling guitar hero, is...Read More
Oh, those shiny, shiny cans of soda pop that your children look at so longingly. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could have the shiny outside without the sugar inside? Well, thanks to the clever design of these Cozy Cans reusable drink cups for kid from the awesome folks at Beatrix NY, your kids can have all of the beverage flash and panache with none of the high-fructose corn syrup. These environmentally-friendly, lead and BPA-free, bright and sassy, vacuum-insulated cans with “brand names” like Dino-licious and Bubbly Bug are made to keep liquids hot or cold. The stainless steel construction feels very sturdy and...Read More
It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for our roundup of the best-of-the-best that we found on the Internet this week. We hope you like them too. How to make rainbow bubbles to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We’re misty eyed at our editor Liz’s post about a mother who didn’t want her son playing with dolls. Britax’s policy on showing no celebrity kids in unauthorized photos. Here’s to hoping more companies will follow their lead. In case you missed it: President Obama on Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Congrats to the winners of the Cribsies New Arrivals award....Read More
I’m not one for fruity candy, so “taste the rainbow” never sounded like such a good thing to me. But now, as the mom of a preschooler and a school-aged kid, I have a new appreciation for the appeal of all those rainbow recipes and rainbow-colored snacks we see all over Pinterest. My kids love multicolored treats any day of the year, but I’m especially eager to try these gorgeous rainbow recipes on St. Patrick’s Day as an alternative to everything green. The rainbow cake has gotten all of the internet glory, but if you ask me, these Rainbow...Read More
We’ve had babies on the brain around here lately for some reason. Maybe it has a little something to do with spring coming–and how soon we’ll be seeing more of those cute little baby toes peeking out from their stroller blankets. So we had the best time checking out all the new Minted birth announcements, cards, artwork and baby gifts, seeing as how they’re one of our favorite stationers–and one of our favorite longtime sponsors. (Thanks, Minted!) It’s always so fun to see what designs their independent artists from around the world are coming up with next. And the best part...Read More
They’re bright green, they’re pretty, and they’re for grown-ups only, which makes these Absinthe Chocolate Cordials the perfect St. Patrick’s Day treat for someone like me. If that mischievous leprechaun’s going to pee green in my potty (you know what I mean), he’d better leave me a little something for my trouble. Those lovely folks at Sugarfina have come up with a unique way to treat yourself on a minor holiday without involving Irish Cream. The chocolate cordials are non-alcoholic but carry the unusual flavor of absinthe, which is herbal and a little like licorice, if you’ve never tasted...Read More
A baby rattle has to be one of the most iconic baby gifts of all time so we love looking for cool ones. We’ve found some amazing wooden rattles and soft rattles out there, but one of my favorites may be the brand new Mercer soft baby rattle from one of our favorite mom-run brands, Chewbeads. It’s not plastic, but rather a 100% food-grade silicone with no BPA, phthalates, lead, or cadmium, just like their necklaces for moms and their awesome new Juniorbeads line. And since babies chew on everything, whether it’s a rattle that doubles as a teether or not, we’re...Read More
It’s crazy to imagine that anyone who shops isn’t yet a member of Gilt Group yet. We’ve seen them grow over the years from mere flash sale site, to a major retail force, with men’s clothes, maternity, food, and even city-specific sales. They’re one of the few sites of their kind that have managed to keep quality up and stay relevant–and if you’re not a member yet, now there’s a good reason to join. As in a $25 reason to join. If you sign up now using our invitation link then place your first order of $50+ by April 30...Read More
Heart for Heart Dolls: Because African Girl Dolls, Mexican Girl Dolls and Laotian Girl Dolls are just as fun as the American ones.
While I have finally come around to accept my daughter’s affinity for American Girl Dolls, suddenly Saige and Marie-Grace have serious competition with Rahel, the Ethiopian doll from the Heart for Heart Girls dolls collection. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Heart for Heart Girls, which are each based on 10 real ten-year-old girls from Afghanistan, Belarus, Laos, India, Ethiopia, and beyond. I really like that each one one gives your child a chance to learn more about her story and her area of the world, while a dollar from each purchase is donated to a nonprofit that...Read More
We’re parents too. We sure know that leaving baby overnight for the first time can be a tough–very tough–decision. But if you’ve got family or close friends near by and willing, it can be an opportunity to catch up on sleep (the gift that keeps on giving when you’re a new parent), to spend some much-needed time with your partner, or take advantage of an important business trip. And don’t forget, it also gives some loving family members the chance to bond with the baby too. Of course, it all comes down to if and when you feel comfortable leaving...Read More
Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night? I am, but it’s not from ghosts or even monsters–just a kid in my house who firmly believes in them. Instead of calling Ghostbusters, I’ve discovered this yummy-smelling Monster Defense Brave Spray. It’s a lot less messy than ectoplasm, and probably way less expensive too. The coolest thing about this handy, 4 oz. spray besides that it’s a smart way to put your kids’ very real fears at ease, is that it smells utterly amazing–like French toast. Whether you’re answering a late night call to banish glowing...Read More
The team behind the Lost My Name personalized books for kids blew us away last year with their sophisticated, clever, custom books for kids that don’t just drop your child’s name into a template story. Instead, the main character goes on an adventure that is entirely customized for your child. We remain super impressed. Now they’ve released free printable coloring pages for kids based on the alphabet that appears in their books. From Aardvark to Zebra, you can put together an entire book of them, letting your kids color their own name letter by letter, or any other word they’re fascinated by at...Read More
Ooh, do we have Alice in Wonderland tea party ideas for you. It’s such a wonderful theme, isn’t it? And when a superhero, Lego, or Star Wars birthday party isn’t quite right, it might be time to break out the tea set for a very merry unbirthday tea party. Or, if your curious one prefers, a Mad Hatter birthday tea party. Either way, it’s always tea time. Inspired by our sponsor, Bigelow Tea, a third generation family-owned business (so cool, we had no idea!), we’ve rounded up the best ideas, from simple recipes to free printables and fun decor, so...Read More
After scooping up some handmade jewelry at a street bazaar during a recent trip to Mexico, I started yearning for even more handmade gifts and one-of-a-kind accessories with an origin slightly more interesting than what I see in mall store chains. We love finding awesome international Etsy shops from time to time, along with wonderful companies like FashionABLE that make gifts that give back. And now there’s Far and Wide Collective, a new site started by international development expert Hedvig Christine Alexander, that’s full of the wares of artisans around the world. More so, they’re all from emerging economies like India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya and...Read More
I was lucky enough to receive a Tree by Kerri Lee baby gift from my co-publisher Liz when I had my fourth daughter and it’s one of my favorite pieces. Her work has appeared many times in our baby shower gift guide, and while I’m in love with everything of hers that we’ve featured, these new animal clocks are my brand new favorite. The adorable wooden fox clock (above) is the newest addition to her clock collection, and I find it irresistible, although those of you hot on the hedgehog trend the hedgehog clock is a close second. Both...Read More
I discovered the wonderful work of the Kenyan rescue charity, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, several years ago, when my parents fostered an orphaned baby elephant on behalf of my children. We continue to follow Kenze‘s progress to this day and we love the frequent and very specific updates we get from them, and news that he’s gone from near starvation to healthy adult now thriving in the wild, even despite the rampant and illegal bands of poachers that still threaten him. Sheldrick’s passionate work gets some ink thanks to avid celeb supporters like Kristin Davis, but otherwise I’m surprised I don’t hear...Read More
We’re cheering for the women at 4:00 Cookie who developed a line of low-sugar cookies, a.k.a. a healthier version of our favorite treat made just for between-meal snacking. Because let’s face it, 4PM. always seems to kick off the bewitching hours around here. Mine included. Grabbing something made of white flour and white sugar is generally not the best course of action for energy or nutrition, but this cookie is actually nutritious as far as cookies go. They use only whole grains, oats, flax, nuts, fruit, bittersweet chocolate and coconut sugar in the cookies, which are all low-to-medium on the glycemic index....Read More
Cool baby shower invitations aren’t always easy so come by, what with showers tending to overflow with oohing and aahing and sweetness pink and blue everything. Nothing wrong with that at all. But if your parenting style is a bit more wry, I’ve put together some of my favorite cool baby shower invitations that make me smile for reasons more than “a baby’s coming!” Trust me, you’ll need to keep that sense of humor once that little guy or gal is here . If you’re still in shock over the news of your impending arrival–or you’re known for spending way too much...Read More
