There’s a reason why Skip Hop is a favorite brand of modern parents. Their ability to create playful and adorable items for babies that aren’t so, well, babyish is what made me a longtime fan, from their nursery decor and crib bedding to their ever popular diaper bags. That’s why I was super stoked to learn about the launch of the Skip Hop Modern Baby Basics layette collection.
I wouldn’t call any of the pieces revolutionary, but I like everything I see — and feel. Sometimes the cutest baby outfits are like cardboard, but the new Skip Hop layette collection is made from the softest cotton, even though it’s really affordable.
In fact I’m surprised at just how thoughtful the design details are, like overlap shoulders and kimono-style side snaps for easy on-off wardrobe changes; scratch-free labels; and fold-over protective mittens for those scratchy little newborn nails. And when I say they’ve paid attention to detail, I mean it. Even the snaps feature Skip Hop’s little * icon.
Currently, there’s the pink and blue color schemes you probably expect, along with a grey, and a limited number of mix-and-match patterns, including stars, clouds, and chevrons. As far as my top picks, I like the newborn sleep gown with blue starry sleeves and grey clouds that’s just $16; at any price, I wish I had had one like this when my son was a baby.
For only $35, there’s also a smart 4-piece Welcome Home Baby Layette Set that’s like a perfect affordable baby gift, all ready to go. And of course there are coordinating blankets and bibs which make sweet little add-ons to something more practical on the registry.
Just know the Skip Hop layette sizes range from newborn to 9 months so it’s really for newborns. Hopefully by the time your babies are outgrowing their clothes, some larger sizes might be available too.
