My daughter isn’t what you’d typically call a “girly girl.” Her favorite clothes are athletic wear and she can hold her own (and then some) with the neighborhood boys in a game of flag football. But she still loves to dress up and has a collection of dolls that has taken over her room. She may not wear sparkles and bows, but she’s still a girl in every sense of the word. So I was really excited to find out about the Girly Girl Doll Company, which is redefining what it means to be “girly” in the best possible sense.

These dolls have backstories — similar to American Girl Doll dolls. Frankie lives on a farm and loves elephants, which live near her at an elephant sanctuary. Jones mixes music on her mom’s laptop. London is obsessed with soccer and science. Oh, and they wear tiaras, fancy shoes with bows, capes and sneakers too.

In other words, they’re able to be as complex and interesting as our own daughters are, which is what we’re always hoping to find in a great toy.

When you pre-order these dolls, you’ll get a free interactive arm band, customized with your child’s initial. It links to the Girly Girl Doll app, which gives you access to their stories, allows your child to interact with the characters, and even gives you the chance to create your own content about the dolls. Basically, it’s a forum to write fan fiction for your doll — very cool.

As my daughter is hitting her tween years and becoming more aware of the kids around her, she’s noticing that the kids in her grade could be put into categories: the sporty girls, the popular girls, the smart girls, and the girly girls… just to name a few. I hope that these dolls, who come with stories that encompass all those categories all at once, will show her that she can be all these things too.

You can sign-up now on the Girly Girl Dolls website to stay in the loop; pre-orders for the inaugural collection — Frankie, Jones, and London — start next week! All the dolls are made in the USA and are scheduled to ship in time for the holidays. If you’re concerned about getting them in time for holiday gifts, you can reach the company directly through their contact form. They were quick to respond to us!
