Weather experts from Europe to the US are warning us to brace ourselves for the coldest winter in years…again. So, when life gives you snow, I say go shopping for a great pair of snow boots!

When it comes to a good snow boot, I want something that will keep my feet warm and dry when I’m trudging through snow and slush, or just tip-toeing through those massive puddles that accumulate at street corners after a storm.  But I want them to feel comfortable and look at least as cool as I can in sturdy winter boots. Not too much to ask, right?

So I’ve gone ahead and found five waterproof winter boots to keep you warm this season — from rugged boots you can throw on to take the kids sledding, to fur-trimmed high boots that keep your toes toasty on date night. I think you may have a hard time choosing just one.

For style and function this winter, we're looking at the North Face Thermoball waterproof winter boots.

I love the quilted panels and leather trim on these very expensive looking North Face Thermoball waterproof utility boots we spotted at Nordstrom. The white gives them a slightly more feminine look, or for something more neutral, click through to see a nice-looking steel grey option. I think they look like something Katniss Everdeen would wear, in the best way possible. But these aren’t just a pretty pair of shoes — the IcePick temperature sensitive soles keep feet warm, while the grippy rubber outsole helps you keep your footing on the snow and ice. These are “utility boots,” after all.

Our pick for staying warm and stylish this winter: the waterproof Sorel Tivoli High II boots.

Our editor Liz swears by her Sorel Tofino boots to keep her feet warm and dry through (now three) brutal winters in NYC — and I’ve seen reviews on Amazon from Iceland and Finland that second her endorsement!  These Tivoli High II boots (also at very top) are also waterproof, rugged, and wildly comfy, but definitely a little sportier as far as style. Still, they’d work for a day out shopping or dinner with a friend who was worth braving a snowstorm for.

Whoa, the waterproof Sasha boot from Blondo is downright gorgeous.

The Blondo Sasha boot almost has me wishing for a blizzard, because these are seriously gorgeous boots consider what workhorses they are. The synthetic upper fabric — which looks just like cozy wool to my eye — is lined with polar fleece for max warmth. The fake fur trim hides an inner seam that’s designed not to let any water get through. So you can head out into the rain, snow, sleet, or hail and stay toasty. Hey! Perfect for stylish postal carriers.

We love the fun, Scandanavian print on the Elsa waterproof duck boot by Keen.

I love the duck boot look, which is a great choice if you’re not in a freezing cold climate. So I was excited to find this playful twist from Keen on the hardworking classic. This style is called The Elsa boot — we see what you did there, Keen — and should last long past you get the songs from Frozen out of your head. I like that the ankle area is fur-lined, but if it ever drops down to around freezing where you live, consider ordering a size large enough to fit thick, warm socks; because while they’re definitely waterproof, the lower boot isn’t lined for warmth.

The Bzees Horizon boots are so light, you almost can't feel them there at all.

If to-the-knee coverage isn’t what you need, but an easy, lightweight pair of boots is, then I have a great idea. Bzees sent me a pair of their Horizon Water-Resistant Boots to try, and I’m definitely impressed. They’re designed to feel weightless, and they pretty much do, even as the “unicorn down” lining (hilarious) and fleece padding keep you warm. Foam and gel layers on the sole maximize comfort, and they’re treated for water-resistance, making them perfect for hikes or yard work on chilly, if not super snowy days. The best part: If you get them filthy, you can actually toss them in the wash. NBD.
