My kids love checking in with the news to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow every year on Groundhog Day (SPOILER ALERT: there will be six more weeks of winter this year), and so the new book A Greyhound, a Groundhog by Emily Jenkins and illustrated by Chris Appelhans is one we just had to check out.

It’s fun for Groundhog Day, but any other day of the year too, because even though it features a groundhog, it’s most definitely not about Groundhog Day.

Each page in this book has beautiful watercolor illustrations of the two titular animals, and the furry groundhog is particularly adorable. The two meet up and have a bit of a romp, and that’s pretty much it — not a lot of story.

But the fun is all in reading along and aloud — “A greyhound, a groundhog, a brown little groundhog. A groundhog, a greyhound, a grey little round hound.”

This tongue-twisting story will have your kids rolling in laughter, and asking to read it again. And again.
