When The Daring Book for Girls came out, I bought copies not just for my own girls, but for their friends. If I could have afforded it, I would have gone around handing out the book like a missionary. Authors Andrea Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz are back starting today with a new compilation of how-to and how-come tidbits that every girl ought to know. From inspirational stories about daring women throughout history to step-by-step directions for classic games and cool tricks, The Double-Daring Book for Girls takes the daring phenomenon to the next level for our female future leaders....Read More
Through most of elementary school, my mother dressed me in dresses. When I complained that I couldn’t hang upside down on the playground for fear of showing my underwear, she was unsympathetic. That was before Francie Pants, of course. These soft, comfortable “privacy shorts” are perfect for concealing underwear, freeing girls to climb trees and turn cartwheels, even in dresses. The prints are snazzy and even a little edgy–I especially like the fun plaid and the Paris prints. Come to think of it, there’s a punky London print too. Which, if you remember the old rhyme, is awesome. -Julie...Read More
I’ll do whatever it takes to help my kids avoid the pain of a sunburn– and avoid me having to listen to them whine about it– but even so, sometimes I forget to reapply sunscreen or miss a spot. My bad. UV Skinz sun protection swimwear is a great insurance policy against those burns that happen in spite of parental vigilance. No chemicals, no lotions, just tightly woven material that blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays. Plus some of the designs are really cute and comfortable, with their children’s swimwear making use of that layered look that’s so...Read More
One of my first purchases after moving from an urban high-rise apartment to a house in the ‘burbs was a bike. Sure, there were plenty of places to ride in the city, but with only two closets and about a million toys, I simply didn’t have the space to store a bicycle too. Ah, the sacrifices we moms make for our kids. If I’d known about SwissBike, I could have had a bike without taking up valuable toy storage space. With technology that originally began as a military research project, SwissBike grew into a line of performance folding bicycles....Read More
With three kids, there’s always a photo op that I am dying to capture but even while I’m never without my digital camera, I’m lousy at remembering to upload all those pictures. Next thing you know it’s July and I’m sending out holiday pics. Eye-Fi is exactly what I need. It is–get this–a wireless SD memory card. Wireless. Hello, genius! It replaces the memory card currently in your camera, and after you configure the Eye-Fi Manager on your computer (don’t worry, it’s a breeze), you pop in the card, take a picture and watch it magically appear on your...Read More
By my third child, I learned that once the walking starts, the trouble really begins. But unless I kept him in a playpen (like our mothers did with us, right?), I knew my kid would eventually start toddling around, using a chair as a makeshift walker. The Wooden Baby Walker from the always wonderful Plan Toys is a much better option. Sturdier than its plastic counterparts, this walker also has an adjustable handle. So it doesn’t matter how tall your toddler-to-be might be– when he’s ready, this walker is too. Plus, it’s filled with colored and natural wooden blocks,...Read More
At Cool Mom Picks, we love to cheer on our fellow moms, spreading the word about cool stuff created by parents we know and the ones we wish we knew. Whitney Hill, founder of iknowamom.com, has brought together hundreds of those moms she knows in an ever-growing index of business owners and artists. And you know? The list is terrific from what we’ve seen so far. You’ll find tons of CMP faves like Blue Poppy jewelry, Resa Design, and Posh Peacock, just to name a few, along with photographers, artists, and graphic design services. So it’s a great resource...Read More
I love the idea of birth announcement as a means of sharing pure joy. But the logistics of actually getting my own announcements in the mail was too daunting for me on top of the rest of my post baby to-do list. No matter how joyous the occasion or how beautiful the birth announcements may be, stuffing and addressing envelopes is a tedious chore. Red Stamp has a whole slew of gorgeous new birth announcements (my personal favorite is the gray and orange pinstripes), but what makes Red Stamp perfect for the expectant mama is their Mail-For-Me service. All...Read More
All three of my kids love to take baths. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean they love to wash themselves. Enter MiniMitts by BellyLaf. These cute bamboo/cotton blend wash mitts are the eco-friendly version of traditional bath mitts. Embellished with your choice of cute sea creatures, you’ll find your kids can scrub themselves way easier with these mitts than with a baby washcloth. If you’ve got a baby, then try Grippees which has little silicone gripping dots strategically placed at the heel of the hand right where I need it when wrangling a slippery, squirming baby who’s determined to elude my...Read More
Creating eye-catching baby stationery is not nearly as easy as it looks. Anyone can print teddy bears or glue gingham bows on heavy card stock. It takes something special to make me sit up and say, “Awww…” Gracie Girl Notes are definitely something special. Designer Bevin McSorley combines simple yet innovative designs with great attention to detail on her custom note cards, party invitations and birth announcements. Adorned with paper cut-outs of ice skates, dump trucks, animals or polka dotted cupcakes, Gracie Girl’s brightly colored personalized notes really stand out from the standard 2-D offerings. These custom cards are...Read More
I’m not much for buying cutesie accessories that are intended to be used on one day only. But that’s the lovely part of Valentine’s Day (apart from the chocolate and wine and flowers, of course); red transcends the symbolism of the day, making it the perfect color for Valentine’s Day gifts that can be used all year long. Take for example this cool poppy clutch from Sakura Urban. With red Italian leather and simple black and olive poppies, this perfect party purse will add some great-looking pizazz year-round. Rich, romantic, and not a whit of cutesy holiday kitsch. In...Read More
I guess you could say that I’m the token eco-skeptic among the Cool Mom Picks writers. Before you start throwing rotten tomatoes at me, consider what this means: If it’s green and crunchy and I rave about it, then it really is spectacular. That’s certainly the case with the new bgreen by joyababy Collection. Of course, we’re already fans of joyababy founder and mom Joya Logue’s designs, so it’s not surprising that her new PVC-free line of bibs, blankets, and diaper clutches is just as gorgeous as everything else she has created. With striking, sophisticated fabrics and mom-essential function,...Read More
For a guy who sets the thermostat at a level approaching “sauna,” it baffles me that my husband loves to take the jogging stroller on errands even when the temperature sinks below forty. While he dresses himself properly in layers, he tends to toss a blanket over the kids and assume they’ll be warm enough. Um, honey? It’s not the baby doing the jogging. The new stroller bunting from Bonne Bonnets (makers of those Bugaboo stroller canopies we love) was made for absentminded parents like him– and shivering kids like mine. Basically, it’s a sleeping bag style foot muff...Read More
That old wives’ tale about heartburn being a sign that your baby will be born with a head full of hair didn’t work out so well for me. I had twenty-seven months of fiery heartburn and three bald babies. But for luckier mamas who’ve got something besides peach fuzz to coif, check out the new Hare Baby Comb & Brush set from our favorite little-mom-run-company-gone-big, Skip Hop. The wide-toothed comb and soft-bristle brush look like bunny ears when placed in the base, which has a shatter-proof mirrored bottom (for admiring oneself, of course). Plus it’s BPA, Phthalate and PVC...Read More
I’d always heard about infant massage, but I never felt comfortable enough to give it a try. I figured that slathering my babies with lotion after their baths was about the closest I’d ever get to practicing infant massage. Then I got a chance to check out the BabyBabyOhBaby infant massage DVD. Oh baby, indeed. This isn’t just an instructional DVD; it’s a showcase of beautiful babies and loving parents having a wonderful time together. Not only would the footage make even your child-free friends’ ovaries ache, it’s also an ideal introduction to infant massage, especially for skittish parents. ...Read More
These days I woo clients while emptying the dishwasher, refilling sippy cups, and changing poopy diapers. Yes, really. Obviously, a Bluetooth headset is a must. But not all headsets are created equal, which is why I lo-ove my Zivio Boom. It’s got six different earpieces, a removable ear loop, and a ball-and-socket style connection. Don’t even worry about what any of that means; let’s just say this wireless headset is so customizable that it will fit anyone comfortably. Plus, the Boom microphone means the person on the other end will hear only me– not my children whining in the...Read More
It took three tries, but I’ve finally got a baby who has enjoyed his bath right from the very start. Although his enthusiasm is such that I practically have to wear a rain slicker while bathing him, it also makes it pretty fun to try out baby bath products–with his help, of course. The new Baby Silk baby bath products gift sets from our friends the MD Moms combine some of our all-time favorite products of theirs into perfect shower gifts. Not only will the chic packaging stand out, the products in each of the three gift sets are...Read More
The brand new Keepaboo has created the perfect solution for disorganized mothers of three like me– you know, the ones who can’t get it together enough to fill out a whole baby book by hand, but who don’t want to forget the milestones. Or worse, hand over a few dozen CDs worth of pictures to our grown children and be like, “Here’s your childhood, kid!” Now I can document all of those precious details online in custom “books,” where I can include the information I want and lose what I don’t. (Beats blank pages in the traditional baby books,...Read More
Those of us who spend a lot of time online tend to be early adopters. Even if we don’t think we’re particularly tech savvy, our friends and neighbors give us a good reality check when they ask, “What’s a blog?” No wonder they never read ours. Don’t even bother mentioning Twitter. For those moms and dads who want to share kid-centric news with friends and family, but aren’t ready to leap into the blogosphere, we’d like to suggest Wee Web. Share stories, photos, and videos with only those whom you’ve invited– no random Google searchers allowed. The really cool...Read More
Now that my youngest is mobile– and, thanks to the open-plan design of our house, cannot easily be confined with baby gates– I’ve had to buckle down and get serious about keeping the floor clean. A few stray Cheerios can bolster his immune system, but anything more than that is too icky to contemplate. Then again, I’m not thrilled by the thought of him licking a chemical-laden floor either. What’s a mom to do? Buy the Bissell Steam Mop, that’s what. This natural cleaning solution is awesome, whether you’ve got a baby crawling around or a gaggle of teens...Read More
