Wooden sweets for your sweets? Sweet!

My kids absolutely love to play store. They’ll gather up whatever small toys they want to sell, set them out, and then yell at me until I agree to buy something. (They need to work on their customer service a little.) I imagine my favorite shopkeepers would happily extend their offerings to sweets if they saw the adorable wooden candy store sets from a brand-new Etsy shop I found. Snugglebug University at Etsy is pure sweetness. The Wood Snow Cone sets (below) are amazing, but I love the two Deluxe Wooden Candy Store sets best. They’re packed with little whoopee pies, candy peach rings, money,...

Change the world by changing your socks. Really.

I don’t tend to spend much time thinking about my sock purchases. Half of my socks tend to get lost in that treacherous journey from laundry hamper to dryer, anyway. But I’ve just found an incredible site that makes shopping for socks–and good-looking socks, at that–an opportunity to change the world. I kid you not. The good folks at PACT have what they call “a movement designed as a clothing company.” (Love.) Each season, they design a collection of clothing inspired by someone doing something good. And then they donate money from the sales of the clothing to that very cause. ...

Swaddle sweetness: a genius new product for fussy babes

It seems like no matter when you have a baby, a couple years later there’s a new product on the market you wish you’d had at the time. If it’s baby time right now in your world or a friend’s, you won’t want to miss this snuggly wonder. *sigh* Oh, how I needed the Zen Swaddle from Nested Bean.  This innovative new swaddling blanket is designed with lightly weighted (the key word is lightly) sections that mimic a parent’s warm, gentle touch and help soothe a fussy baby. For times when mama just wants five minutes of quiet time to brush...

Buy one, gift one, make someone’s day: kindness comes in travel size

We adore this new trend of “buy one, donate one” products, in the model of TOMS Shoes. And now there’s one more, from a mom of two who took a personal tragedy and turned it into a truly inspiring company. After the near-drowning of her three-year-old son, Laura Metro founded WINK (When In Need of Kindness), a buy-one-give-one toiletry bag company.  When you buy one of her gorgeous toiletry bags, a similar one will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms. As Laura writes, “When a parent is in those rooms, things are not good.” These toiletry bags help bring...

Feed the world with beautiful limited-edition art

My kids are getting to an age when they’re understanding that there are big differences between the way we live and how families around the world live. It’s pretty tough these days, though, for a kid to feel like they can make any kind of impact in a faraway country. Because, frankly, when you only have a couple of dollars a week at your disposal, it’s going to take a long time for it to add up to much. The beautiful Global Compassion poster from Children Inspire Design might be just the answer our family is looking for. Purchasing a signed, limited-edition poster for...

My First Year posters and cards: second babies everywhere, rejoice!

As a mom of three, I had the best intentions of chronicling my children’s milestones–and the worst follow-through. I know I’m not alone here. If you’re expecting Baby #2 or #3 now, you’re in luck. I found a new approach to documenting all those sweet milestones that I think you’re really going to appreciate. If I’d had one of the new and wonderful My First Year Cards or My First Year Posters from Strange Birdy Studios, I think I would have been set. With space to fill in baby’s key milestones over the first year, they’re simple to keep up with and make...

Welcome to The Studio: a brilliant resource for budding artists, scientists, chefs and their parents

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Kiwi Crate here at CMP. We love the concept: a subscription service for kids that sends out monthly boxes filled with superfun, educational activities. But now, we can also benefit from the creative minds behind the wonderful Kiwi Crate kits without spending a dime.  The Studio is a brand new online directory that’s packed with more than 500 projects, recipes and activity ideas to keep your family’s creative juices flowing. I’m already obsessing over all the Halloween ideas. My kids would go batty (heh) for the 3D Yarn Spider Web.  But The Studio’s...

The most spectacular vintage paper dolls. We want them all!

Paper dolls are the perfect emergency boredom-buster to have on hand, at least if you’re our family; every fall, a bunch of annoying colds and coughs descend on my children, leaving at least one of them at any given time home on a school day, moaning “I’m boooooored.” I’m loving this wonderful Etsy find as an alternative to 12-hour movie marathons. We’re already big fans of the gorgeous collectible carved Alice in Wonderland dolls at Etsy shop Cart Before the Horse, but we’re so happy to find their awesome articulated paper-animal dolls which are just as lovely. Just cut...

Shop green and do good? Count us in

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy shopping. Because, uh, I do. But a brand-new partnership between two very green sites, Vine.com and Healthy Child Healthy World, has me even more giddy about my shopping habit. And with a nice little discount for all of us too. Vine.com is a new online shop from the same people behind Diapers.com and Soap.com. Currently in beta, Vine is devoted to green, natural and sustainably sourced products, like Cool Mom Picks favorites gDiapers, Method and Plum Organics. Great premise for a shop, right? But here’s the cool part: when you make a purchase of $49 or more...

5 of the most stylish metallic diaper bags

I’ve been noticing something in the land of designer bags these days. It’s flashy. And shiny. And very, very cool. The metallic trend is popping up in handbags everywhere, but that doesn’t mean that mamas can’t be part of it, too with one of these 5 beautiful diaper bag options we tracked down. No blindingly gold Studio 54 era bags either, promise. –Stephanie S. We’ve always been fans of timi & leslie bags at Cool Mom Picks, and their gorgeous Hannah bag in Pewter bag is an affordable, durable option that just happens to be vegan-friendly, too since it’s...
