The forecast for spring is: Gorgeous

March may be in like a lion but I’m counting on that whole lamb thing working out. Especially since I just got a look at the brand new spring/summer line from Ses Petites Mains, one of my absolute favorite mom-designed indie clothing labels on this planet, which absolutely outdid themselves this season. Both Kristen and I were excited to see designer Beth Miles take a dive into seersucker, with gorgeous capri pants for girls and a linen blend skort; a nice alternative to dresses on dressy Sundays. Especially if you pair it with something like the flawlessly smocked penny...

A baby cap with a little more to it

Over the past few years at Cool Mom Picks I’ve seen the reinvention of the high chair, the baby carrier, the baby bottle and the bouncy chair. The last newborn essential I thought needed any improvement was the baby hat. Well color me surprised, but Honeydumplings, which created the buckwheat toddler pillow I went mad for last year, has gone and done just that. Their new baby cap on first glance just looks like a simple, go-with-anything, creamy, gender-neutral cap. Soft as butter with that bamboo cotton jersey or organic sherpa, but you know – still a cap. When...

Born with a silver shoe

Just because the holidays are behind us doesn’t mean it’s time to put away the sparkle. Especially when it’s as subtle as the lovely silver mary jane baby shoes from Chickpea Kids. I fell in love with these butter-soft lambskin shoes when I first caught them at a trade show a few years back, but because they’re all handmade, they’re not in wide distribution. Thankfully, one of the great local Brooklyn kids’ shops, Acorn Toy Shop, has them on their site, along with a gold version. And if you want to up the ante (and double the price), you...

Sleep, my little valentine. Sleep.

There’s no shortage of Valentine’s Day attire for little girls (like the Kideko heart pajamas we found this week) , but when it comes to boys, it’s pretty slim pickings. And I get it. Dressing a boy in a rose-colored heart shirt is a tough sell, even if there is a Spiderman on it too. But the adorable Love Pirate sleep sack from CMP fave Baby Burrito is the perfect festive nod to Valentine’s Day for both baby boys and girls without smothering your little one in pink. Made from organic cotton and bamboo, and featuring a simple heart and cross bones, this...

Wearing 77 hearts on your sleeve

Valentine’s Day or not, I am so taken with the new heart pajamas from Kideko, it’s almost a shame that they’re designed to be worn in the dark. The color is wildly vibrant in person, reminiscent of European brands like Kit+Lili and Plastisock. And the cotton jersey is so soft and stretchy and bedtime-ready, it’s not surprising they come from the same Australian company whose funky kids’ bedding we adore (and also happens to be on sale for up to 70% off right now). If you’ve got a boy, check out the other sleepwear styles including the fun blue...

If you didn’t want to eat up your kids before, these clothes may very well inspire you to.

The new spring 2010 line from Masala Baby is fusion at its finest. A little bit of the New York urban vibe mixed with a lot of Indian spiciness and tradition. Blended together, they create one of the coolest kids clothing collections I’ve ever feasted my eyes upon. True to its name, Masala Baby combines bright, bold colors, sophisticated styles (great for boys like mine who may not always want a giant truck emblazoned on the front of everything) and practical pieces that will keep both moms and kids happy–babies too–with their stylish, yet fun, aesthetics. And does your...

Bootie-ful

I remember feeling pretty annoyed with everyone telling me how difficult it was to have a winter baby – more blankets, big coats, being stuck in the house all day. The list goes on. But what they all failed to mention was the adorableness of winter baby wear, like these ridiculously cute baby booties from Funky Shapes. Handsewn in the UK using gold and chocolate felt and Japanese fabric, these limited edition baby shoes will keep those tiny tootsies warm and cozy, and the careful seam-free construction ensures that they’re actually comfortable, not just cute to look at. Take...

Winter whites

There may be nothing more perfect on a baby girl than a simple little white hat. No pompons, no animal ears, no purple organza flowers bigger than the baby’s own head. I found a serious contender, a hand-knit baby hat from Natural Star, at one of our favorite new boutiques, Australia’s Trifle Shoppe. The soft cotton bamboo fabric looks absolutely cozy, and the crocheted flower adornment isn’t too fussy, too frilly, or too overwhelming. Sizing starts at 0-6 months to get newborns through the cold months, but goes right up to a 5+. Because who says only babies deserve...

Leggings for girls who want to do more than host tea parties and watch princess videos

My four year-old daughter recently informed me that jeans were “stupid.” Which, okay. Not the term I would use, but I get her point that she’d rather be wearing a dress, even to kick a soccer ball in the park. I know for a fact mom, designer and entrepreneur Wendy Feller has walked in my shoes, because she invented Zupers. These durable, SPF 50 leggings for girls are commendably made right in the USA and feature a pair of cushy, removable, heart-shaped neoprene kneepads to encourage girls in dresses to do more than sit around and look demure. Including...

What’s better than a scarf? A Snood.

When I was in Spain last month, I was introduced to Snoods from Kid Cashmere, these beautiful handmade cashmere sleeves from mom Jolie Sutton. Over the head they’re like ear-warming hats, but down around the neck they replace scarves – maybe even better, after hearing all those scary stories about little kids who get their scarves caught in bad places. (Eek.) All the items in the shop are handmade from Italian and Scottish spun cashmere, and silk yarns, making them really smooth and not the fuzzy kind of cashmere that ends up in your mouth. And now that I...
