Ooh…affordable baby gifts at Nordstrom while you’re busy shopping for yourself

Featured partner If we had to pick a favorite department store, Nordstrom would be right up there. Between the designers, the wide selection, and their amazing customer service (take the time our Editor Kristen accidentally came home with a security tag attached to her new coat and Nordstrom sent an associate to her home to take it off!) we find ourselves making excuses to pop in whenever we can. (Hello, Chanel counter.) You can also ask our credit cards how much we love shopping there. So you can imagine how excited we are to welcome Nordstrom as our newest...

Creative ways to capture baby’s first words: a celebration of motherhood firsts

This post is part of our monthly series with our Baby Shower Gift Guide sponsor, babyGap, celebrating motherhood firsts. And there are lots! No milestone may be more exciting than hearing a baby's first word. Whether it's "ba" for ball, "da" for dog, or a perfectly articulated cronut (it could happen) it's a thrill to see kids starting with the basics and building from there. Which is why we love finding wonderful resources for capturing and documenting them.  1. Write it down You think you'll remember your baby's first word forever but those of us parents with more than one can assure you that's not always...

Belts little kids can do by themselves. Whoo!

We discovered mom-run Myself Belts back in 2006 (wow), and it’s awesome to see how they’ve grown. They make a brilliant line of first belts for toddlers, especially during the potty training months. You know what I’m talking about. And now there are some smart new styles for fall. If you’re not familiar with the concept, these are more than just a piece of fabric with some Velcro at the end; they snap around the first belt loop to secure themselves to the pants (no belt ends in the toilet, whoo!) and then it’s easy for kids to string...

Return your hand me down baby clothes and get new organic ones back. Sounds good to us!

The worst thing about buying baby clothes? The fact that those precious outfits will be outgrown way too fast. While of course lots of us try to hand our baby clothes down or resell them, not all of them are in shape to do that. In fact according to the EPA, Americans toss over 13 million tons of textiles a year with babies’ and kids’ clothes accounting for a hefty percentage of that. And that’s why we’re loving this seriously revolutionary new planet-friendly approach to babywear.   Kinderstuff is a company that’s rethinking baby fashion by letting you send in your...

Baby socks that are major in the style department

There may not be much cuter in life than teeny tiny baby feet. But with fall now nipping at our heels, it’s time to think about socks. And if you’re going to cover up something so adorable as baby toes, it might as well be with something beyond chic.   Say hello to the new ridiculously cute sock collaboration between Colette, Paris’s most trend-setting fashion boutique, and the simple chic clothing line Etiquette. The new Etiquette x Colette Bundle gives newborns (0-12 months) a serious dose of style in the form of combed cotton socks in cool geometric patterns and in...

You are amazing, beautiful and strong. Just ask your socks.

Heaven knows we’ve featured plenty of tees and artwork featuring empowering messages for kids. Now we’re adding socks to the lineup.  I really like the premise behind the Notes to Self Socks founded by mom Laura Schmidt. They offer simple notes of affirmation that kids will see first thing in the morning, last thing when they go to bed, and if they’re my kids, throughout the day when they are ripping off their socks to do cartwheels in the living room. They’re not super cheap, so I don’t think you’ll stock your whole sock drawer with them, but as a cool...

Black and white for babies. (You were expecting pink and blue perhaps?)

With black and white back as a hot trend this fall, my eye went right to these super cute handmade baby onesies and accessories on a very cool Etsy shop that’s new to us. At Mabelretro, you’ll find all kinds of fun, vintage-inspired baby clothes, from 40’s-era diaper covers to baby spat booties and dribble bibs that look like old sailor collars. Every single item is handmade by Andrea in Vancouver and it’s hard to pick a favorite. But I’m definitely digging the fun collared onesies, especially in bold black and white patterns that we know are best for an...

Adorable baby booties that actually stay on. It’s real! We swear!

There is some unknown force that prevents socks from staying on babies’ feet. Probably the same one that makes socks magically disappear from dryers. Luckily, a new line from guava kids, guavaboots, is an answer to this ongoing conundrum and will be the solution for all those one-socked babies in the world. The new baby footwear from guava kids (we love their guavamitts!), are adorable bamboo-derived, organic cotton sock-booties that miraculously stay on through all those little baby kicks and wiggles. Thanks to Velcro enclosures which are completely adjustable, the guavabooties will stay on babies’ feet, regardless of how...

The best age-appropriate bikini swimsuits for little girls. As in, no, they don’t need to dress like teenagers.

If I fall on my sword for one thing every year, it’s that retailers need to provide us with more appropriately modest two-piece swimsuits for our daughters. Last year was a tough year, with triangle bikini tops making the rounds. This year looks more promising! UPDATE: For 2017 picks please visit our most recent post on adorable, age-appropriate two-piece swimsuits for girls.  I hit some of our favorite go-to sites for a few recos for those of you mamas with similar girls’ bikini guidelines to mine: non-hoochie, no string bikinis, no provocative statements, no plunging necklines, limited sparkles and sequins,...

Super baby redux

There is something intensely satisfying about putting a small baby in a superhero cape. Maybe it’s because babies aren’t particularly heroic; who has time to save the universe while attached to a breast? Instead of an actual cape, try a hero onesie designed by an artist famous for gracing the pages of McSweeney’s. You’ll find it at Wordsation, a cool site that commissions artists to design baby onesies and t-shirts for hip urban kids everywhere. Wordsation seeks out artists with a unique and still child-friendly look to create apparel with edge. They have a rotating roster of artists that...

A baby shower gift with bite

Babies are warm and cuddly and thinking about them helps us conjure up images of teddy bears and pillowy clouds. Well, unless you actually have one and you know that in reality, babies have more bite than we give them credit for. So for the next baby shower, opt for something with some edge, like these shark baby pajamas from Black Wagon. After all, aren’t babies really at the top of the food chain in a way? Plus, like sharks, babies have the ability to fascinate and frighten us all in the same breath. –Eva Hatley Shark Footed Coveralls are...

Ceci n’est pas une ironic onesie

No baby should be without a My First Ironic T-shirt Snapsuit from Wry Baby in their onesie drawer. The unicorn! The rainbow! The irony!
