From the OMG files: The portable changing table that hangs from the bathroom stall door.

Until there’s a changing table in every restroom — male and female — one company has come up with an innovative solution in a portable baby changing table. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. The Baby Change-n-Go was designed by two moms with toddler twins, with the hopes of saving parents a whole lot of grief when the only option is to change your baby on the bathroom floor (ew) or in your lap. It’s small enough to fit in your diaper bag until you need it. Then you just unfold it, and basically slip over the top of any public restroom stall door. Fold it down, and you’ve got...

Honest election diapers for bipartisan babies

Now your baby’s bottom can get political this election season with these limited edition Honest election diapers that are eco-friendly and bipartisan-friendly, too. (Great for split households.) Related: Get political with these new TOMS shoes We’ve been longtime fans of Honest diapers and not just because we have a girl crush on Jessica Alba (who doesn’t, seriously?). Not only are they freaking cute, they’re made from sustainable, plant-based materials, without chlorine processing or additives, but still keep babies dry. Not included, however, is the Sharpie. To make them your own DIY partisan diapers, of course. Heh. You can order the Honest election diapers...

Waterproof diaper bags that just happen to make the perfect pool totes

Even if you’re not in the market for a new diaper bag, you might want to give the waterproof diaper bags from TWELVElittle a second look. My kids haven’t been in diapers in years, but I’ve been using their new waterproof diaper bag daily because it makes a perfect pool tote, too. There’s plenty of room for sunscreen, snacks, and towels for three kids. And if you do have little ones, it’ll work well for hauling diapers and swim vests, too. Or, you can hook swim vests to the shoulder straps — wet or dry — without worrying about ruining a pretty bag....

Swim diapers that help stave off sunburn too? We’re impressed!

Summer break has already started for my kids, and will soon for the rest of you all who are still dealing with daily drama of homework and packing lunches. Our first day was spent at the pool. Mom win, right? Well, sort of. Because my youngest — also, the squirmiest who hates getting sunscreen slathered on him — got burned, badly. And all too quickly I remembered it’s hard to trust your eyes in the bright sun to see if your kids are getting too pink and need to reapply their sunscreen. Well, if you’ve got any pre potty-trained kids in your house,...

Change for Good: Helping new moms in need is as easy as a diaper change.

I found out today that 30 percent of moms living below the poverty line can’t afford the diapers they need for their babies. As in, sometimes their kids have to wear the same diaper all day long because that’s all they have. I shouldn’t be entirely surprised when you look at the poverty issues with mothers in particular, but no mom should have to choose between food and diapers for her kids at the end of the day. And with Mother’s Day coming up, it really makes us think about those moms who could use a lot more than a...

Cloth diaper covers too cute to cover up.

Baby bums are cute, but cloth-diapered baby bums? Well, they’re really something else. So when I learned about the lovely new handmade-to-order cloth diaper covers by Carissa Halbmaier in the Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop, I got just a little bit excited thinking about all the babies I’ll be able to buy them for. (Update: They’re now available at the Barrel and a Heap Etsy shop.) These bright, bold geometric prints are nothing like the plain primary-colored cloth diaper covers from my diapering days. And looks aside, these covers are also conveniently designed to grow with baby, plus lined with PUL fabric...

Being eco-friendly just got more stylish with these 5 very cool reusable swim diapers

Summertime means pool time for my family, and while I’m so so glad we’re finally all out of diapers this summer, I’m a little bit jealous that we missed the boat on so many adorable reusable swim diapers that are now out there. Not that jealous, mind you, because I’d much rather spend my extra cash this summer on popsicles, not diapers.(And heaven knows I’m delighted to be out of the diaper phase all together.)  But if you’re in the market for cute, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternatives to those disposable swim diapers, check out these favorites of ours that look more like bloomers...

The world’s cutest portable changing pad. Who knew there was such a thing?

When my oldest was a baby, my “portable changing pad” was a burp cloth spread out on a bathroom counter. Nothing wrong with that, but looking back I would have prefered one of aden + anais’s portable diaper changing pads back then. We’ve been big fans of aden + anais for ages (they just keep making so many great things!) and this changing pad is no disappointment. It comes in eight of their modern, cool designs — I love “up, up and away” and “liam the brave” — and they’re made from a pre-washed cotton muslin. And they are so soft. The pads are...

WipesWraps: Something cute on the changing table besides your baby’s tush.

After the birth of my third baby, I was quickly jettisoned back into the world of nonstop diaper changes. For those of you still in that 12-a-day phase–or even if you just keep wipes in the car or the kitchen–the affordable, handmade WipesWraps by CleverRelish are an adorable way to make that generic wipes case a little prettier around the house. Some of the designs are a little off for me (that is the strangest “camo” fabric I’ve ever seen), but there are some nice simple stripes, chevrons, and prints like Cool Nordic that feel a bit more sophisticated. As for function,...

New moms rejoice! You can now dabble in diapers.

Finding the right diaper for your new baby can be just as difficult as finding the right jeans for your post-partum body.  Without naming names, I can still remember the popular brand of diaper that caused volcanic leakage that ruined my first baby’s cutest onesies. Another brand smelled funny. And yet another had tape that wouldn’t stick. $40 and three boxes of useless diapers later, I –like many moms–finally found the brand that fit my baby perfectly. Now, a new service makes finding the right diaper easier–and cheaper. Diaper Dabbler is a brilliant new way for new parents to...

Honestly wonderful news for moms and babies

Editor’s note: Due to a few technical difficulties, the store will be running by end of May for individual purchases. I always love finding more choices for safe, non-toxic baby products for my family, which is exactly why I was so excited to discover The Honest Company a few months ago. It’s an amazing collaboration between green guru Chris Gavigan and eco-mama Jessica Alba. It’s also why I was thrilled that they partnered with us for our Mother’s Day Gift Guide. But while we adore their baby product monthly subscription bundles, we did wonder when they might start offering...

A safer diaper wipe? Yep.

It always scares me when I see a laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients on my baby’s personal care packages. Especially when said product is a diaper wipe, meant to touch the delicate nether regions of my little one. Thankfully, there’s a new wipe in town that contains only two ingredients–water and fruit extract. WaterWipes from the Irish brand DermaH2O, have just launched in the U.S. and they very well might be the purest wipes around. Made with 99.9% water and .1% grapefruit seed extract, these are wipes you can feel confident about. I am seriously turned off by any...

The nighttime cloth diaper of my dreams

Once upon a time, in the land of cloth diapering, there was a great diapering secret that somehow remained elusive to many parents: the overnight technique. Finding what will work for your particular baby in his particular sleeping arrangement can be tricky, to say the least. And there will likely be many wet sheets before a solution is found. (Which, for a co-sleeping mama like me is a rather unpleasant situation.) Well, friends, I have found an answer that doesn’t require the proverbial nighttime disposable. SoftBums diapers have been keeping my bed dry and I am thrilled by how...

Cute cloth diapers for under $10. No, really.

I love cloth diapers— they’re cute, they’re eco-conscious, and they prevent a traumatic gelsplosion from an accidental disposable in the washing machine. But with most of the pocket diapers I favor clocking in at $19.95 each (or more!), it was always hard to build a solid stash. So here’s the cool thing: We found a collection of All-In-One pocket diapers that can take your baby from newborn to potty training, and they start at just $9.95 each. The company is GoGreen, a WAHM-run enterprise out of Boulder, CO. I found the collection of cloth diapers to have excellent quality and...

This cloth diaper is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!

The only thing more adorable than a cute baby bottom in a cloth diaper is saying “Charlie Banana” whenever someone asks you where the diaper came from. What you might not know is that there’s a new brand called Charlie Banana that can cover all of your cloth needs in one fell swoop with free shipping to boot. [don’t miss a special offer after the jump] Charlie Banana‘s aim is to make the world a greener place by...

Natural baby wipes take care of babies and their home planet

You’ve got some organic spaghetti on your face, honey. Let me get that for you. (Licks thumb, scrubs face off shrieking, flailing baby.) There, isn’t that better? Well, a little. I mean, the tomato sauce has been replaced by a red rash, and my baby is covered in spit. But at least it’s better than drenching his tender face in diaper wipe “juice” riddled with propylene glycol, right? Wrong, thanks to Elements Naturals 100% Compostable baby wipes. These natural baby wipes are now even more fantastic than they were when last we lauded their benefits. And a lot better...

This witty, thoroughly entertaining compilation from Laura Mayes, co-founder of social news sharing site Kirtsy and occasional Cool Mom Picks contributor, does a phenomenal job of capturing the energy, the inspiration, the humor, the art, the beauty, and the passion that can be accessed...

Good Baby. Good mommy. Good diaper cream. Everyone wins.

When my first daughter was born, I figured all diaper creams were pretty much created equal. I bought whatever sounded familiar, never once scanning the label for stuff like synthetic fragrances, methylparabens, or sodium borate–let alone BHA which is on the banned/restricted list in Europe and carcinogenic per California’s Prop 65, but is a key ingredient in big brands (coughDesitincough). Let’s just say I still have residual mommy guilt over that one.  I will say I am feeling totally guilt-free since I’ve been slathering my second daughter’s nether regions with Our Best Barrier and Diaper Cream from the most...

The cloth diapering mama’s little helper

Cloth diapering obviously requires more work than disposables, and if you are new to it it can be a little daunting. It’s always great to find resources on the web and friendly people willing to help out, which is what Julie Sparrow Carson is doing with Bundle Baby Shop. She’s gathered not only excellent choices for cloth diapering, mama care, and baby carriers (like the beautiful Polkadot Papoose which we love), but they offer diaper service for those of you lucky enough to live in the Denver area. I love that they offer a half-and-half delivery service (half cloth,...

Big brands doing cool things – Huggies diapers go greener with Pure & Natural

I’ve put my babies in everything from cloth diapers to paper towels (desperation, people), and while for now we’ve settled on disposable diapers, I still sometimes feel a bit guilty about it. I’ve tried a few of the “natural” disposables, but I’ll be honest; while they may be better for the environment, some of them are pretty bulky and worse, leaky. Which is also why you rarely see them recommended here. So I was definitely intrigued when Huggies came out with their new Pure and Natural diapers, which is of course banking on the fact that I’m not the...

Biodegradable baby wipes that don’t suck. Really.

While I’m greening up my act in many ways, I’m still pretty picky where it comes to baby wipes — it’s not totally unreasonable that I don’t want to cut corners with the one thing that’s keeping me from getting poop all over my hands. So in one of those cosmic coincidences, directly after I’d refilled the wipe container with a package of Elements Naturals biodegradable baby wipes, my son felt moved to present them — and me — with a major test. Color me shocked, but these wipes do what I never believed the eco-friendlier wipes could do....

Cloth diapering goes eco-chic-er

I’m amazed at the advances that have hit the cloth diapering world, even in the short year that’s passed since I stopped using cloth with my son. Case in point: Blueberry Diapers. While cloth diapering is economical by most accounts, their one-size cloth diapers do double-duty on the financial front, since they adjust take your newborn right through to potty training (provided he’s under 35 pounds at the time). The microfleece and a hemp/terry insert inside keep the cute bum dry, and the amazingly soft laminated minky outside almost seems too nice for poop. Ditto with the all-in-one Diapers (shown)...

Biodegradable disposable diapers? It can be done.

Let’s face it, greener isn’t always easier. I think we all want to be the best eco-moms we can, but for me there was no way I was venturing into the world of cloth diapering. My guilt has just been assuaged however with a fantastic find: Nature Babycare Diapers, spotted at the wonderful online eco-boutique, Cooler Choices. After trying them out on both my baby and my toddler I can give an honest assessment. Pros: They’re breathable, compostable, and free of oil-based plastics, latex, chlorine and fragrance. Most importantly, they do what they’re supposed to do, all without having...
