Warthogs need love too, ya know.

I’ve seen many a hooded towel in my parenting tenure, but none quite like the new ones from 3 sprouts, which always has a way of ensuring equal rights for all animals when it comes to toddler bathtime. Yep, that’s a warthog hooded towel. I’m completely smitten with his adorable nose and intimidating tusks. Made from 100% cotton, inside and out, I bet he’d make a welcome addition to any bathroom towel rack. And you moms will appreciate the smart little loop to making hanging up a cinch. And really, what a perfect way to feed into your little...

A Dolphin Tale

“I got water in my eyes!” my son wailed.  But he wasn’t crying. Actually, he looked like he was trying to cry and couldn’t. “Doesn’t hurt, does it?” I said smugly.  And he shook his head no. A perfect chance to pitch a fit, lost to products that actually live up to their tear-free claim. Oh, and did I mention they’re also hypoallergenic, all natural, and organic? I’ve got to admit– Dolphin Organics impressed the heck out of me. The number one reason? Transparency. Each bottle is dominated by a large, clear label showing every single ingredient and its...

The non-petroleum jelly that stole my heart (and lips)

Is petroleum jelly safe? Well, let’s say since having children, we’ve switched to kinder, gentler beauty products. No sulfates, no parabens, no horrible-things-that-might-cause-cancer-or-dye-the-children-pink. The one product I couldn’t let go of was petroleum jelly. But I’ve finally found a way to kick the habit, thanks to Live Clean Baby. I grew up with petroleum jelly. On my nose during the winter, on my lips at night, on my burns and scrapes. My mom always had a big tub in the bathroom for any job that couldn’t be accomplished by lotion and Chapstick. And then one day we learned we...

A nursery that smells like…well, not the diaper pail.

My 8-month-old son’s nursery really stinks. He’s very prolific in the poop department, which means a Diaper Dekkor full of smelly diapers. Thankfully, I discovered a new spray that literally spritzes the stink away without icky chemicals. The spray is aptly called Kiddo Stink Away Spray and it’s from the toxin-free, aromatherapeutic skincare line Hellomellow which we fell in love with a couple years back. I’ve been spritzing it after every diaper change and it really works. My son’s room now smells like a delicious mix of essential oils rather than a public restroom. Nice way to start the...

Buffy the Dry Skin Slayer

I love exfoliators, but I rarely buy them. Why? I hate digging my fingers into goop and then watching half of it ooze down the shower grate. But with the cold weather here and the radiators blasting, I’m happy to have found a yummy scrub that sidesteps the bad stuff, to leave you feeling lean, clean, and totally buff. Our friends at Mama Mio have put a stake in the heart of dry skin with OMega Body Buff Exfoliator. Squeeze some into your hand while the water heats up and rub it into your skin from neck to toes– before you ever...

These natural baby hair products are 90210 approved

It generally doesn’t matter to me that a bunch of celebrities use a particular hair care product on their babies. But it did make me wonder what was so special about Jenerations Baby that Hollywood moms seem to be flocking to it. Jenerations Baby was founded by Jennifer Reilly, a mom with two kids and fourteen years of experience as a hairstylist. She wanted natural products she could feel safe using on her kids, so she designed the hypoallergenic line without sulfates, parabens, harsh chemicals, or essential oils that are potentially estrogen disruptors. Well, now I see what all those...

Just call it “the same toothpaste Ariel uses”

Yes, friends, we live in a world where even toothpaste can start a debate between parents and children: What’s in it, what’s not in it, whose picture is on the tube, whether or not it burns like fire, mommy! (by which she means it’s mint.) But here’s a toothpaste just for kids that harnesses the power of coral–yes, coral–for maximum dental health. It’s called Coral Kids, and it uses EcoSafe ionic coral to protect from cavities, whiten teeth, and freshen breath, all without the use of fluoride or sodium lauryl sulfate. Never fear– it doesn’t harm our coral reefs;...

One of the best baby lotions goes fragrance free

More and more of our readers these days ask us for fragrance-free lotion recommendations for sensitive baby skin. And I don’t blame them. I still remember tossing the high-end European stuff that I got at my shower (by my own request), thinking that I didn’t need my newborn smelling like a Bloomingdale’s perfume counter. So I’m thrilled that one of my favorite brands, the MD Moms, has taken the plunge into the unscented baby lotion world. I’ve been a raging crazy avid fan of the MD Moms since I first met these two smart, lovely pediatricians–and their innovative baby...

Dr. Hauschka skin care – believe the hype.

Even as an avowed skincare fanatic, I had never sampled the Dr. Hauschka products I’d heard so much about. This line is known for being holistic, ecologically sound, and focused on the body’s rhythms and internal processes. Which is great and all, but oh my gawd, the results. Count me in as the newest Dr. Hauschka fan, a line now available at CMP fave Hazel Wood Children, which means you have a great excuse to grab some luxury skincare for yourself, right  between the skull socks and the tiny purple tank top. The Blackthorn Body Oil smells like a...

Tiny bubbles end the whine

My favorite parenting hack: If you give your kids a bubble bath and encourage them to roll around a lot, they get clean and smell great without loads of scrubbing and whining. Most of the store brands give my daughter a rash, so I’m super picky about what I’ll pour under the faucet. But now I have a new favorite, and it’s from an old favorite of mine. Babo Botanicals wowed my socks off with their phenomenal line of hair detanglers for kids. And now they’ve won me over yet again with their new Lavender Meadowsweet 3 in 1...

Okay, kid. Here’s that kitten you wanted.

I’m pretty sure my Christmas list one year included a puppy, a kitten, a bunny, and The Black Stallion. I was deeply disappointed not to find any boxes with air holes under the tree, but you can get at least 3 out of 4 with these adorable stocking stuffers/post-Christmas consolation prizes. Added bonus: clean kids. That’s a great gift. The Surprise Animal Soaps by Sunbasilgarden on Etsy are all-natural, handmade, and cute as a button. With scents including banana, strawberry, bubble gum, cotton candy, and creamsicle, part of the fun will be watching the kids hover over the sink,...

A gift for kids that doesn’t stink.

When I was little, getting useful gifts was always a huge bummer. Then again, my Great Aunt Hilda usually went for the half-price, open-package soap-and-undies combo pack at KMart. True story: One time, they even had World’s Best Lover printed across the tush. I was 8. But my kids love baths so much that they’d be overjoyed to find a bottle of eco-conscious, gentle bubble bath in their stockings. Especially if it’s by My True Nature. This new, mom-run line of just-for-kids bath products comes with a 100% all-natural guarantee and a cute line-up of characters from a teddy...

Goodbye, dry skin. Hello… cookies?

The cool, crisp air of fall is here, and moms everywhere are pulling out their baby lotion arsenals to keep eczema and dry skin at bay. For me, the toughest part about having kids with sensitive skin is finding just the right product that does everything I want it to do and actually smells nice. This year, I’ve already got two kids begging for lo-lo, thanks to the new line from Lavanila Laboratories. Of course they call it “cookie lotion” because it smells just like sugar cookies with a touch of lemon–in a calming, soft way that moms will...

Johnson’s Natural means more naturals for all.

When I first heard that Johnson & Johnson was coming out with a line of natural baby products, I was intrigued. My first thought was, it’s about time that there’s a choice like this for the moms out there who can’t afford the high-end natural stuff at the health food stores. So when I was asked to work with the company as a consultant and spokesperson, I was honored. Thrilled even. I might have peed a little. (But only because I’m pregnant.) Especially after taking the products home, trying them out on my own kiddos, and seeing that wow,...

I can’t wait to be on the road again

Sometimes, full-sized baby skincare products can be intimidating for me. Like that enormous tube of diaper cream, or the half-gallon jug of powder that I can all too easily imagine scattered over my floor. I like my products like I like my kids: short and cute. At least until I get to know them better. That’s one reason I’m loving the Road Pack by Mayron’s Goods. But it’s not the only reason. [don’t miss our giveaway after the jump!] The Road Pack brings together five must-have baby products in an adorable, waterproof travel bag. So it’s cute. And handy....

Cute catches from the celebrity safari

We’ve just discovered a high-end line of ultra-luxe baby towels and accessories beloved by Brangelina, TomKat, and loads of other celebrity couples with two names that get put together to form one name in the press, which is completely annoying. Little Giraffe is not an African safari, but at least you don’t have to deal with giant mosquitoes and predators in its pursuit. Unless you count paparazzi as predators. Based in Los Angeles, their baby towels and accessories are definitely of the more foofoo animal print variety, but we love the adorable and deliciously soft Luxe Hooded Towel, which...

Protecting little heads from UV rays, chlorine, and parabens too

I’m not one for fussing with my girls’ hair too much – if we remember to brush it in the morning that’s a good day. But I do know that the poor kids have inherited my frizzies, coupled with their dad’s thin hair, which is a great combo, especially in the summer. So Cozy has a nice protective conditioning mist with sunscreen that we’ve loved using this summer. I can just spray it on their hair after the bath, but because of the sunscreen, I think it’s best to keep in your beach bag or diaper bag for some...

Yes, carrots. YES!

I’m not in the habit of talking to vegetables unless I’m pregnant and singing a love song to my tempura zucchini. Still, I find myself saying yes to Yes to Baby Carrots several times a day lately. Maybe you’ve seen the orange-splashed Yes to Carrots brand at your local drugstore or SuperTarget and wondered what the big deal was. The deal is this: Organic veggie extracts, 100% natural ingredients, and a complete absence of parabens, petroleum, and SLS. All now with a line made just for babies. Are you shouting YES, CARROTS yet? Because I totally am. My favorite...

Maclaren – Now making scents

Ah baby smell. The intoxicating fragrance of that soft hair, the delicate sweetness of their freshly washed onesie, and the putrid, offensive nasal assault of a fully-loaded diaper. Thank heavens for the new Beginning by Maclaren line of aromatherapy candles which rids your nursery of those less desirable odors and fills it will a sense (and scents) of calm. Each of the five scents are designed with a purpose, whether to inspire you, rejuvenate your or just calm you (and the baby!) down. They’re made from 100% natural soy and palm wax and other vegan ingredients. The candles are...

Even burly babies love Smoochie.

We call my baby Big Hoss because he’s burly and loves all things rugged– trucks, Star Wars, and motorcycles. But when it’s diaper changing time, Big Hoss is now a fan of sweet, sweet Smoochie Baby. This baby body care line from the uber-cool store in Brooklyn includes all the perennial favorites — lotion, soap, shampoo/body wash, massage oil, diaper balm, and more. All products are hand-made with love and affection in Canada and include gentle, all-natural ingredients. Our favorite is the Sweet Cheeks Talcum-Free Powder, which uses a delightful Japanese recipe of arrowroot powder, kaolin clay, and lavender...

Turns out pampering does come in a tube

I love the way my kids smell after their bath; all of their products — shampoo, soap, lotion — have light, fresh scents. Bath lines for grownups can be cloying in comparison, but baby bath products don’t work on my super dry skin. Thank goodness for the Glowology line of products from one of our favorites, Noodle and Boo. It’s a perfect marriage of clean scent and heavy duty moisturizers. Glowology products — everything from a basic body wash and lotion to a delicious sugar scrub and super moisturizing body balm — are hypoallergenic and free of potentially harmful...

The hot new baby gifts of 2010, courtesy of Hoppop

We saw a whole lot of baby gear (a lot) at the ginormous ABC Kids Show in Las Vegas last summer, but very little stays with us all these months later. One exception however, is the cheerful European Hoppop Baby gear, which Kristen, Julie and I all made a beeline for, and ever since, we’ve been waiting–impatiently–for its US release. Well hallelujah–it’s here!–and we get to be the first to tell you about it. This collection of registry-ready baby and kids gear is just beautifully designed, but equally as practical. The anchor product is a very innovative diaper bag...

Makes kids out of the bath as cute as they are in it.

My daughter has a crazy affection for her little bathrobe, especially now while the mornings are cold. She throws it on over her pajamas for breakfast, and there’s something so sweet about it to me – as if a bathrobe makes every morning feel like a lazy Sunday, even as we have to get dressed, pack lunch, and get off to school precisely 8 minutes after the spoon clinks down in the empty cereal bowl. Poking around this week I came across the Dwell Studio toddler bathrobes and just swooned. The sparrow and paper doll designs are clearly for...

Let’s talk baby eczema, shall we?

Baby eczema = not the most exciting of all the things a new mom gets to learn about. Having a daughter with moderate eczema myself, I get it. I know how carefully we have to pick out bath soap, shampoo, and body lotion, and that even though we’ve tried a lot of natural and organic products, not all of them take care of those scaly patches or work with her extremely sensitive skin. Since discovering Exederm, I’ve got at least one less thing to worry about. These baby products are made from extremely mild ingredients and contain no irritants,...

Shower curtains, hold the PVC

Thanks to the lovely stench of PVC shower curtains, I absolutely dread buying new ones. I’ve always sworn those things have got to be at the top of the environmentally unfriendly list. Turns out, I was right. So here’s an awesome alternative – EVA plastic shower curtains at Lavish and Lime. At just over $20, these affordable shower curtains are made without PVC, so that means no stinky toxic plastic smell and better, no chlorine gases released into the atmosphere. I’m digging the patterned “Koko” curtain shown here, or they’ve also got plain clear shower curtains, aptly named “Hitchcock.” It would be easy to love...

Sweet knees and elbows and cheeks and bum.

The best part of bathing my baby is breathing him in afterward — but it does call into question exactly what’s in those bubbles and that bum cream anyway. The skin care artisans at Sweet Knee keep no secrets — all of their carefully-selected yummy ingredients are spelled out clearly and are recognizable even to a sleep-deprived mama.  I especially love the Oatmeal Cookie Bath, and the Bun Glaze, made with marshmallow leaf and calendula flowers. But what really sets Sweet Knee apart is their focus on humanity at large. They consider growing methods and worker conditions when choosing...

Natural baby products – The more the merrier

When my local supermarket carries twenty different baby skin care lines, it’s clear there’s a lot to choose from out there. I can’t keep track of what should or should not go on my baby’s skin and who is or who isn’t using the most environmentally-friendly manufacturing methods. I can, however, notice when a baby is clean. And when a baby smells amazing. And when a baby’s skin is not irritated by all the stuff I’m rubbing on it. Green Elly, a cool new parent-run brand, has put out an ultra-green baby skin care line that I just love. They have two kinds of natural baby wash, a silky baby body cream, and yummy diaper balm. And a portion of the proceeds from their baby massage gel, which Green Elly designed for use in massage therapy for kids with special needs, goes towards autism research. Their products are free of all the common skin irritants, parabens, phthalates and fragrances, and the divine smell comes from natural shea butter and essential oils. Look through the website and you can find all sorts of information about what makes their company green and their kids’ bath products safe for delicate baby skin. But I was convinced when, 5 minutes after smoothing the lotion on my boy’s red cheeks, they were no longer irritated. And he was asleep....

Goat milk soaps – a family affair

When I was in Maine a couple of years ago, I found the most incredible handmade goats’ milk soap at a farmer’s market. I’m such an idiot for not scribbling down the name, because I haven’t been able to track it down again. But recently, I found something equally as wonderful from just a few thousand miles down the road. The ten-member Jonas family of Indiana makes delicious, all-natural goat milk soap from their very own prize Alpine dairy goats — so cool! I tried out some of my favorite flavors like lavender and grapefruit (I’m definitely not the...

A little pampering, in whatever spare moments you have

Honestly, I’m not that into bath salts and scrubs and fancy pampering- maybe because my shower lengths are too often determined by how long I can stand to hear the baby cry.   But I do understand the advantages of smelling nice, which is why gift boxes of organic body care products always make a perfect gift for a new mom. I recently checked out the organic and eco-friendly products from Gifted by Nature and really loved the rose-ylang ylang-patchouli products. Just when you thought there was nothing new in the world of baby wash cloths

Since falling in love with muslin swaddling blankets, I’ve donated most of my daughter’s other blankets to my kids’ play bin. So when Jessica Burros of the shop Bambino Land told me she was designing muslin wash cloths, I scrambled to get my hands on them — and they did not disappoint. If you can manage to wean yourself off terry, you’ll find the super soft muslin squares are perfect for wee baby bums, but are still large enough to work for older kids. They’re extremely durable but get softer after each wash, so unless you’ve got a washcloth...
