Potty training, now a lot less stinky

I thought my three-year-old was a total potty pro until I learned today that he has been peeing in his closet every night for a week. Oops. If only we had this fresh and truly inventive new potty, I think a lot of things would stink less.  You might think it would be hard to improve upon something as simple as a potty, but Munchkin has joined Arm & Hammer to create the Munchkin 3-in-1 potty that eliminates odors (with baking soda, of course) and encourages better bathroom habits than evidently I did. It functions as a step stool,...

Baby mats go eco-chic

One of my favorite pre-bedtime rituals with my son is massaging his little feet before I put him in his PJs. He immediately relaxes and gives me the biggest smile. I usually do this routine on his changing table, which is never that easy because he squirms way too close to the edge for my taste. Thanks to a new beautiful, yummy-soft massage mat, I have a new, non-scary spot to give my little guy a rub down. The luxurious Quilted Massage Mat from the moms at Honeydumplings (the creators of those awesome buckwheat pillows) is one of those...

Cleaning dirty pacifiers on the go with Dapple SurfaceWipes

My 8 month-old is going through the slobber-filled teething stage. That means a lot of wiping his drooly chin and giving him plenty of teething toys to alleviate some of the pain. One thing that I find incredibly frustrating is when he drops those teethers on the dirty sidewalk or restaurant floor and wondering how to clean them. Yes, I know that the more kids you have, the more you’re probably comfortable just wiping it off on your jeans. But for those of you clean freaks (like me), allow me to present the food grade wipes from Dapple. All of the cleaning products from Dapple use...

Buy one baby blanket and get two. The second, for a child who really needs it.

If you’re considering a baby blanket as a gift for the upcoming holidays, or simply for a new baby in your life, I can’t think of a more beautiful gesture than one of these Me Two You baby blankets. Because for every one you buy, one is also donated to a child who can really need it. Made with supersoft, luxuriously minky fabric and trimmed with satin piping, Me Two You’s Plush Blanket is the very definition of what a snuggly blanket should be. And it’s just the slightest bit smaller than a crib mattress–the perfect not-too-big-not-too-little size for little...

The perfect gift for baby’s first Hanukkah

Baby’s first anything can be difficult to shop for and baby’s first Hanukkah doubly so. So if you are looking for something different and special for the little bundle I suggest you check out Judaica pioneer Emily Rosenfeld. I have personally been gifting from Emily’s charming line of judaica for years. Fashioned out of pewter and featuring funky and playful designs, every Emily Rosenfeld piece is great for the modern Jewish family who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.  In the past I have been known to give her tzedakah boxes and mezuzahs as baby gifts but this “chai” baby...

The no-fuss diaper bag that we’re fussing over

When it comes to diaper bags, fancier isn’t always better. Sometimes I just need something simple and classic to get the job done. A they-thought-of-everything kind of bag, like the new Ah Goo Baby Grab & Go Bag, looks like it will fit the bill nicely. First of all, it’s not going to cost a full paycheck. In this era of designer diaper bags, that’s saying something. Second, it’s totally mom–and dad–friendly. No “Honey, I’m not wearing that Kate Spade over my shoulder” arguments from your partner. And third, it’s got some pretty cool features. I like the crumb...

What’s black and white and red all over?

You know how much little babies love things that are black and white? Well, I’m kind of getting a kick out of imagining a baby freaking out on this awesome play mat. Seriously, they wouldn’t know where to look first. Leave it to the MoMA Store to carry one of the neatest looking baby play mats I’ve seen in a long time. Alongside the high contrast color scheme, the Crawl & Discover Mat has all kind of things to keep a wee one interested, including crinkle paper, flaps and textures. But mostly, I just want to see a baby...

Hey baby, what’s your sign?

A blankey is the the one gift that I didn’t care we received way too many of when my daughter was born. It’s a perfect idea when you have no idea what the new parents have or need, but want something more keepsake-y than diapers. But this one takes it up a notch, should you want your blanket to be just a wee bit cooler than the others at the shower. This hand stitched super cozy astrology baby blanket is so very sweet, and a more interesting way to personalize it than a mere monogram. It’s made from repurposed...

Because every mom could use a third arm. Or uh, giraffe’s neck.

Sometimes I wish I had another arm. Like to feed my baby with or to hold a toy for him to play with or to cook spaghetti while doing both of those things. A cool new bit of gear for babies (that happens to look like a giraffe’s neck) aims to be just that–a third arm. Baby Giraffe is a flexible “spine” that clips to a stroller or car seat, and holds everything from bottles to toys so your real arms can do other things–like push the stroller or eat sushi. It was created by an inventor dad who...

Two awesome essentials that make traveling with kids so much easier

As every mom learns pretty early on, ease of travel with kids can come down to having the right gear. Whether we’re flying across the country or just taking the kiddos out to eat in our ‘hood, if we don’t have the proper seat, stroller or sippy cup, we’re in for a wholly unpleasant time. Enter Brica, a newish company that’s out to simplify the whole parenthood thing with awesome products that make getting out of the house a lot less of a hassle. (Edited to add: Brica products are now at Munchkin.) Brica relaunched their company last year...

A bouncy chair that does nothing except bounce. Shocking!

As much as my 5 month old would love for me to hold him 24/7, it’s just not humanly possible. For the times I need to put him down, I think there’s nothing better than a well-designed bouncy chair to keep baby upright while giving him a good view of the action. And that’s it. In other words, no bells, no whistles, no motion-activated animal sounds, no batteries–shockingly old school, right? [don’t miss a fabulous giveaway after the jump!] I’m thrilled to have found the chic and simple Vida Bouncer from Maclaren, which does nothing more than bounce. It’s...

The FDA bans BPA (sort of)

As a glass-is-half-full kind of person, I am thrilled to read that the FDA has (finally) agreed to ban the use of BPA in all baby bottles and spill-proof cups. OK, sure, Europe, Canada and China, along with a handful of U.S. states, have already made this move. And I know that the words BPA-free have already been on just about every baby bottle and sippy cup label for the past couple of years. But I’ll give the FDA credit for issuing the ban, even if it seems to be coming a little late and really doesn’t go far...

From Cradle to College

I love that furniture designers have stopped looking at cribs as a utilitarian object, and started embracing their artistic nature. GroFurniture is a stunning new eco-friendly furniture line, all made in the USA by real furniture artisans. It was started by a husband and wife who created these cribs for their own children. And now make them for everyone. Each crib is made to order and from what I can see, the assembly is easy. Of course, this all comes at a price. But fortunately, it’s meant to grow with your baby; you can purchase the bundle set which...

A cradle that will rock more than your baby

File this one under “Ever-Growing List of Gorgeous Things Celebrities Own That We Never Will.” It’s pretty much the most beautiful cradle I have ever seen. With the most extraordinary price tag. The So-Ro Cradle (“be calm” in Norweigan) is a stunning piece of furniture; walnut-covered baltic birch plywood, artfully crafted into a safe haven for babies that feels right at home with the Eames and the Noguchi. It rocks forward-to-back, not side-to-side which So-Ro creator Ane Lilian Tveit, a neurological expert, discovered soothes babies much better. And it’s evidently built with all kinds of safety in mind including a tilted mattress with various...

A baby quilt that’s photo op ready

Nothing says “welcome to the world baby” quite like a cozy quilt. We must have gotten half a dozen of them as gifts when each of my sons were born. We are fully loaded with brightly colored patchworks, dizzying animal prints and handmade woven blankets, all of which do the job, but oh how I wish one of those quilts were as delicate, soft and gorgeous as these lovely ones by Little Auggie.  Made with ultra-snuggly 100% cotton, the printed baby quilts from Little Auggie look perfect for wrapping little bundles. They are certainly not the most budget-friendly blankies...

The baby travel crib that raises the bar for all other travel cribs

I finally get the baby travel crib thing. My first baby had a play yard which was great for storing all kinds of new baby gifts, diapers, blankets–you get the idea. We didn’t bring it out at all with my second child, giving it away soon after she was born. Then came number three. And that’s when I realized what I had been missing. The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light is the easiest-to-put-together piece of baby gear I have ever seen. Ever. It is the answer to my oh-my-goodness-I-need-to-put-this-baby-down-somewhere-safe-for-five-minutes so-he-won’t-eat-electrical-cords-while-I-cut-carrot-sticks-for-my-big-kids woes. A baby book for the modern mom

More than 10 years ago, author/illustrator Sara Midda first published a lovely baby book as an alternative to those structured, rigid baby books with all those intimidating lines. (You know the ones.) Only for some reason, I just discovered it. Good thing, because today it’s just as relevant as ever.  Simply titled Baby Book, the first thing you’ll notice is the loose, fun watercolor illustrations that remind me a bit of the wonderful R.O. Blechman. Next you’ll be struck by some subtly cheeky prompts that put you at ease right away. Like, “don’t worry if you don’t hand-calligraph every...

Britax makes that car seat to stroller dance so much easier

I think having a baby would be so much easier if the getting from point A to point B wasn’t such a pain the butt. In my family, we’ve tried pretty much all of the travel systems that are supposed to make life simpler; let’s just say that most of those stroller/car seat combos never really live up to their promises and often make things even more difficult. But then I discovered the new ultra-lightweight, ridiculously easy travel system from Britax, I actually started leaving my 10 block radius with baby in tow. The Britax B-AGILE Stroller manages to...

Mobiles go neon

If you’ve been anywhere near a fashion magazine, you’ll know that bright colors are in for fall. We’re seeing it everywhere, from clothing to accessories to school supplies. And now, one more very welcome place: kids nursery decor. If pastels were never your thing, you’ll love the new handmade paper mobiles from the talented Heather at CMP fave, Frazier + Wing. The bright, neon colors. I love designs like “Lucy” and “Alexander” (shown) which artfully string together a yarn pom pom amongst thick die-cut paper shapes in colors that will match any kid’s room decor. Hooray for color! –Liz...

Swankifying the booster seat with Clek

One of the biggest complaints we hear about kids car seats and boosters is how ugly they are. Yes, I know safety is the biggest priority, but once we check that off the list, I would prefer not to have a ginormous thing squarely in my rear view that’s covered in neon zoo animals. Well yay for Clek which is upping the style quotient in the booster department with a limited edition offering that sure is swanky. The Oobr Booster, reviewed here last year, is practical as it is safe, made with an amazing range of safety features, a...

Muslin swaddlers get as pretty as they are practical

If there’s one baby product that’s made a name for itself in the last few years, it’s the cotton muslin swaddling blanket. Yes, we’ve been tracking down the best ones for quite a few years now, but they’ve never been as beautiful and adorable as they are now. The gorgeous new muslin swaddlers from Little Giraffe are so pretty, they’re kind of making me want another baby to swaddle. (Let’s keep that under wraps, though. Pun intended.) They’re the same big swaddling blanket size we’re used to, but I’m really in love with some of the prints. Particularly the...

phil & ted’s, you’ve got some Verve!

It’s got to be said: I’ve never been a big fan of the in-line stroller concept. I was always worried that the poor kid in the bottom kind of gets the shaft, staring at the back of a seat for the whole ride. Much to my surprise however, all it took was one look at the phil & ted’s Verve stroller with the double kit attached, for my kids to start fighting over who would get to ride in that bottom seat first. Guess I was wrong. We really enjoyed our time trying out the Verve. It’s a sleek...

Clothes that are easy to get baby in and out of–and now easy on the eyes, too.

I’m all about finding ways to make life easier, especially when there’s a newborn at home. To that end, we raved about the clever designs from Magnificent Baby when it first launched. Magnificent Baby and A-List Mom founder Elina Furman put their minds together and designed the adorable Elephants on Parade fall collection. It’s the same thoughtful sleepwear...

The handy dandy box of things a mom seriously needs

If there’s one thing a new mom needs–besides a post-partum doula who does dishes and makes sushi from scratch–it’s baby recommendations from someone who’s been there. After all, that embroidered silk blanket from Aunt Edith is fabulous, but it’s not going to work as a swaddler during the first 2 AM crying session. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a service that would deliver boxes of exactly what you need, exactly when you need them? Oh, yeah. There is. Citrus Lane is a brilliant new subscription service made for moms, by moms. For $25 each month, you get...

Not your average baby bib

When you enter the solid food stage of babyhood, you see how messy a tiny baby can really be. Newborn spit-up has nothing on mashed bananas and avocado, right? The Moxie Bib is one of those why-didn’t-I-think-of-that mom inventions that I don’t know how I lived without. A super-soft terrycloth bib –with sleeves– that velcros around baby’s neck. That’s it. There’s even a short-sleeved version for summer, though if your kid’s messy enough, a long-sleeved one ought to work for you year-round. The sleeves have cuffs to keep the food out and the soft neckline offers complete coverage so...
