The baby soft book pretty enough for mom’s dresser

Plastic. Polyester. Licensed characters. Slobbered-on ribbon. The sound of a toilet flushing with one press of a button, that becomes four million presses of a button–those soft baby books that pile up after the baby shower have always been strictly utilitarian. Until now. Our friends at Wee Gallery have knocked another shower gift out of the baby ballpark with their new accordian-style soft book, that looks more like a piece of art than a learning toy. Hand-made in India of beautiful, touchable silk and hand-loomed cotton, the soft book features six sassy Wee Gallery animals drawn in an artsy...

Rockin’ deals on Rockin’ Baby Slings

I more than happily paid full price for my Rockin’ Baby Sling, and considering I wore it almost every day for six months with two out of my three kids, it was well worth it. But they’re currently selling all their stock for an exciting relaunch early next year, which means you can score amazing deals on one for yourself. There’s a reason why these were both Liz and my all time favorite sling, in particular their rockin’ baby pouch, which features gorgeous fabrics and a super smart zipper system that makes it adjustable without having to deal with a sometimes...

A shout-out to the liger of the babywearing world

Fun fact: when you combine a male lion and a tigress, you get a liger. It’s weird, it’s cute, it likes to swim, some people believe it has magical powers. It’s also the biggest cat alive, often growing to the size of both parents combined. That’s the kind of power packed by the half-buckle carrier, a mix of mei tai and soft structured carrier. (Yes, I’m the resident baby carrier geek.) And if you’re looking for a liger of your own, I suggest Baby So Smart. Baby So Smart. is a woman-run company offering hand-made baby carriers from lush,...

Beautiful French bibs with a beautiful eco story too.

I’ve had a rash of friends and family having babies lately (welcome to the world little Drew Micah!) so I’ve had baby gifts on the brain quite a bit. I tend to get something off the registry for the shower, plus a little something-something extra, like a fun bib that brings some style. I think the baby bibs by Cocoboheme are the kind of thing I could stock up on for all future showers. These French made bibs have absolutely adorable designs–a pig, frog or lobster–printed on an eco-friendly plastic that’s made from potato starch. So if you don’t...

Indie lullabies? That would be a yes.

Going back a few years, I held fast to the belief that if I was going to be stuck out of my bed in the middle of the night rocking an infant, I deserved to play a little night music that would be awesome and make us both (oh please, oh please) fall asleep. So when a bunch of indie musicians got together to make a compilation lullaby CD, I took notice on behalf of those you who will soon find yourself rocking, rocking, rocking the night away. The result is Sing Me To Sleep – Indie Lullabies which brings together...

The game of cute eats

Sure, as a seasoned mama, you know that even the cutest plate won’t keep the applesauce out of baby’s hair and the peas out of her nose, but hope springs eternal. And really, what makes a better baby gift than adorable tot-sized tableware? French Bull‘s latest offerings include this gameboard feeding tray, complete with wee adorable spoon nestled in its slot on the side. Maybe your toddler will eagerly eat along the “path” to score a win, or maybe she’ll just look really adorable while she feeds her dinner to the dog. Either way, I think it’s a pretty...

Twin sets for babies of type geeks

I have quite a few friends who are mothers of twins, so I’ve always got my eye out for cute twin tees that aren’t the same old same old. And yes, they do exist. [don’t miss a nice offer after the jump!] Case in point: The wonderful Twin Baby onesies from the mom and pop team behind the new shop, Snug Attack by twelvezeroseven. The hand screened designs are a clever typographical play, with the A or B highlighted in the phrase TWIN BABY to reveal whether it’s Twin A whose just eaten a mouthful of sandbox sand, or...

Mamas & Papas is good news for mamas and papas everywhere.

The last thing that the world may be waiting for is another stroller brand. And yet Mamas & Papas is not new to the world–just to the US. As of, oh, about right now. And I actually was waiting for it. For real. After nearly 20 years, Britain’s number one baby brand is ready to make its mark on the states and I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Mamas & Papas is still family-run and having had the pleasure of meeting that very family, I was charmed by their commitment to safety, style and meeting the real needs...

Aden + Anais go organic

Even though I haven’t had a baby around here in just under two years, I still use my aden + anais muslin swaddling blankets. But with a new little one arriving soon, I might just have to splurge and add more of their amazing swaddlers to my collection – this time from their new organic line. The same fantastic muslin that you (and I) have fallen in love with is now available as an organic baby swaddler, which means the cotton is grown free of pesticides and other chemicals. And while I still love the brighter patterns, like the...

First baby shoes by First Nations women

Sure, we’ve all had elasticized slippers for our babies, but when was the last time your baby went out in hand-made, hand-beaded leather stay-on moccasins made by First Nations women in Canada? Not recently, I’m willing to bet. These little moccasins from Quemeez moccasins are designed by Sunshine Tenasco, a mom of three, who along with her staff on the Kitigan Zibi Indian Reserve in Quebec makes every slipper by hand. And (now here is where my heart melts a little more) for a tiny extra fee you can even have the moccasins customized with your child’s initials. The...

The video baby monitor that just may turn you into a video baby monitor fan.

In my now six year tenure as a parent, I’ve learned you should never say never. Because there’s a good chance, especially if you have more than one kid, that your never will come back to bite you in the butt. So while I can say with confidence that I will never purchase a wipes warmer, since using the new Philips Avent digital video baby monitor, I’m now eating a few of my words about video baby monitors. To be fair, this cool monitor is much different than some of the heftier models I’ve seen (and admittedly, joked about),...

Need a travel crib? Just pump it up.

Words I never thought I’d hear come out of my husband’s mouth as he strolled by our living room: Whoa, that’s some cool-looking pack-and-play.While I’ve never thought of a portable crib as particularly cool, I do admit this is one that would stop me in my tracks too. Good thing it lives up to its looks. The new GoCrib is totally unlike the portable cribs I had to schlep around when my three kids were babes. Back then, I remember metal bars and slippery nylon. I remember lugging a heavy bundle and trying not to pinch anything as I set...

Trading Cradles – It’s like Twitter and Craigslist had a really well-behaved baby

Give the gift of baby labels

I’ve learned over the years it’s nearly impossible to register for everything that you will need for your new baby. In fact, I’ve got a huge list of items that I wish I had thought of asking for or even just ordering for myself. And up high on that list would be personalized name labels. Now I realize that personalized baby labels might not be the most showy of all baby shower gifts, but the folks at Emily Press have created a slew of stylish labels that would be a lovely surprise for a new mom or a thoughtful...

Breaking news – CPSC votes to ban sale of all drop side cribs

With the recent slew of crib recalls, and now Pottery Barn Kids voluntarily recalling 82,000 drop side cribs today, it seems that the CPSC has had enough, so much so that they voted unanimously to ban the sale of drop side cribs in the United States. The issue with drop-side cribs is not a new one, mostly due to poorly constructed and installed sides on specific brands and models coming loose and babies getting dangerously and sometimes fatally trapped. However, this new ban now applies to all brands selling this type of crib. So, once again, check your cribs,...

Starting babies on organics early

I still remember my daughter’s first “friend” – a garish stroller toy that we dubbed Guy the Giraffe pronounced the French way, Gee, because it was the one sound my three month-old made. Oh how she loved that thing. And sucked its antlers. Every chance she got. If MiYim had been making their adorable organic stroller toys back then, I’d have traded in Guy in a second. Or at least found him some company. There’s an adorable bumblebee (shown) with equally suckable antennae; plus a ladybug and caterpillar, all made in subtle, subdued shades of organic cotton. There’s even...

Prettying up the nursery in unexpected ways

If you’re anything like me, you spent all this time picking out the nursery colors, obsessing over the crib sheets, and then completely forgetting to beautiful the very thing you look at 40 times a day–the diaper storage. I never really liked those hanging diaper caddies. And I’m iffy on the ubiquitous rattan baskets lined with fabric.  But I do like these handmade fabric storage buckets from Denver’s Mick & Mack. With colors from orange and teal to earthy browns and olives, they’d look fabulous in any nursery. I’d fill them with diapers and leave them in plain sight...

A crib with a view

Back about six years ago when I was shopping for our first crib, they were still made only for sleeping babies and not for their style-conscious parents. But these days, moms have a whole array of amazing, inspired options, and one of the most incredible we’ve ever seen are the super cool new Ubabub cots. Most of the newer, modern designer cribs at baby furniture stores still give some sort of nod to the old classic bar sided cribs, but not Ubabub, which really has reinvented crib design. The versatile Pod (pictured) as well as the mid-century inspired Nifty...

Easy Summer Travel Week pick: Coverplay play yard slipcover

I’m no germaphobe, but the idea of putting my bundle of joy in a hotel-supplied Pack-n-Play which may have been cleaned with industrial-strength chemical cleaners or worse, nothing at all, gives me the heebie jeebies. Fortunately, the solution isn’t to haul your own twenty-pound play yard through an airline’s baggage check. [see the amazing giveaway after the jump] Instead, I’d pick up a lightweight Coverplay play yard slipcover which we discovered way back in 2007. Since then they’ve added matching sheets and loads of new styles. Another cool thing is that now more than 2500 hotels in the Marriott...

Breaking news – Over 2 million cribs recalled

Yikes.Thankfully no deaths have been reported, but if you have one of the listed cribs, you’ll want to get rid of it immediately. This isn’t the first time that drop side cribs have come under scrutiny, and according to the...

Like putting baby in a bubble, but prettier. And less crazy.

Who amongst us hasn’t wanted to put our precious newborn in a germ-free, weather-protected, cocoon of safety at some point? That’s not just me, right? Calling dibs on affordable bibs

After getting two kids through the messy eating phase and currently dealing with one who’s in the thick of it, I might just be a bib expert. And I have to say that the bibs from JJ Cole are some of my all-time favorites. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve added two very adorable patterns for girls (pictured) and boys, but what I like is that the laminated canvas — which is PVC-free and pthalate-free by the way — is super easy to clean. Add the catch-most pocket that’s just the right size, along with neck snaps that stay closed...
