Owls and mushrooms and hedgehogs, oh my!

If you’re looking to bring some happy new artwork to your child’s nursery, or think it would make an awesome baby gift for some other lucky child, I’ve discovered a wonderfully affordable option that I absolutely love, in Woodland Friends. This colorful book is filled with twenty beautifully sweet pull-out prints, all created by five talented illustrators and designers from the US and UK. In other words, twenty gifts under $20. Not bad, right? From the simple muted tones of Dawn Bishop’s work to the Michelle Romo’s bright, vibrant colors, I like that there is so much variety in these heavy cardstock prints. And, yet, since all...

Move over cutesie nursery art, plush taxidermy is taking over.

When papier-mâché animal heads began popping up on blogs a few years ago, I wasn’t completely sold on the trend of faux taxidermy as children’s decor. Sure, they were a million times less creepy than the real deal, but they didn’t seem playful enough for a kid’s bedroom. On the other hand, the plush taxidermy from Kelsey Davis Design are the perfect mix of wit and whimsy. If had a nursery to decorate, I’d place my order today.  All of the creatures she makes would be adorable over a crib or a dresser, but the crown-wearing lion and vintage-patterned pig are my two favorites. Related: Zoo portrait clocks that will have you laughing.   The wall mounts...

A life without coffee? Unimaginable.

Suddenly I get all of Delilah’s posts about making coffee with a Chemex and how every drop of effort is worth every drop of coffee you get; at least ever since my unexpected turn (if you ask those who know me best)  from K-Cup coffee drinker to full-fledged coffee devotee. I never thought I’d say things like “wow, the crema on that espresso is really amazing.” And yes, I know it sounds kind of douchey so I don’t say it out loud when actual people are around. Because I’m also picky about good design, I have to give huge props to these...

5 creative photo gifts for baby showers. All guaranteed to last longer than a bottle warmer.

Photo gifts for baby showers can be a win even before the little one arrives. It’s just so personal and thoughtful, and hey, if you’re going to go off the registry, might as well really go off the registry. So we’ve looked around to find some of the most creative photo gift ideas out there. You know, the ones so sweet they’re destined to bring tears to the eyes of the guest of honor (with a little help of those pregnancy hormones). Of course, as with any photo gift, these require a little bit of lead time to get ready before...

Beep beep! Reader coming through

Bookends are always a smart way to blend function with design in a kid’s room, so I’m often looking for cool ones. I’m taken with the wooden car bookends on My Sweet Muffin, which also happen to be on sale right now. They’re handmade in the Netherlands from rubberwood, then screenprinted. All three designs are pretty cool, but I have to admit a fondness for the not-specifically-a-VW minibus.   The one tough thing will be to get your kids to resist the urge to color them in. Or hey…let them paint them. Why not, right? Find the wooden car bookends on My...

A fun tissue holder to get kids smiling through the phlegm.

Kids will always have runny noses. Always. So I’m all for adding a little fun to the dreaded Parental Nose Wipe with this adorable Whale Tissue Holder we spotted at Etsy shop ShopSparklyPony. We think that kids’ tissue holders can be a little corny at times,  but this little whale is a charming work of art. Lovingly hand crafted and–get this– “individually tested for proper tissue-release,” each whale is stamped, dated, signed and numbered so you know your Moby Dick is an original. Because you know that’s just the kind of thing that kids care about when they’re home with a miserable cold....

Dream a little dream of dragons, bats, and narwhals.

Now you can put your baby to sleep with visions of fantasy dragons, hedgehogs, and even adorable bats (yes, they’re a thing) in her head. The handmade baby mobiles from Bee Janie Baby Mobiles feature all these creatures and more. You guys, they even have a mythical beasts mobile—you know, in case you have a Game of Thrones nursery in the works. Each mobile is handmade from felt, and most have somewhat unexpected creatures for a baby’s room. I mean, have you ever seen a mobile with bats before—the sleeping-in-caves kind, not the baseball kind? Me either, but I want one now. The...

This is your brain on embroidery hoop art

While we have tons of ideas for fun and irreverent best friend gifts, I’m excited about the embroidery hoop art over at Merriweather Council’s Etsy shop, where their wry sense of humor matches their hip design aesthetic. Merriweather Council has been a favorite of ours for a while—have you seen their irresistible monogrammed embroidery necklaces?—and these embroidery hoop art pieces have really gotten us talking. This is a fun, unexpected bit of decor to hang in the kitchen for that pop of vintage coolness.   If you don’t...

The perfect kids’ chandelier, no lights required

Hanging a chandelier in your dining room or foyer can be gorgeous, of course. But hanging one in your kid’s bedroom or play room? Gorgeous–and totally unexpected. Especially when it’s a brightly colored acrylic kids’ chandelier from Nicole Ketchum, now in the Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop. Granted, these are just decorative chandeliers, so they don’t light up. But that’s even better, right? Since you don’t have to worry about wiring or outlets or fancy little bulbs, you can literally hang them anywhere. I like the idea of thinking outside the box (or house) and suspending a chandelier from a tree branch for an...

Custom family portraits: 10 cool, modern options for a truly special holiday gift

It’s such a cool, special gift for a grandparent, a newlywed couple, for a new parent, or a far-away relative. The only challenge: You have to get it together early enough to commission yours in time for the holidays. And yep. There’s my problem. Every year. So this year (cue angels singing) I’m here in...

The fun 3D shelf that’s coming right at you

No matter how cool technology gets, there’s something to be said for a good old-fashioned 3D movie in which a shark tries to bite off your head. If your family loves a movie experience that includes paper glasses, this cool 3D shelf from our pals at Jellio would look fantastic on your game room wall or even in a cool kids’ room. It’s made of acrylic and features shelves mimicking the bright red...

I’m inclined to call this find the world’s coolest animal clocks. But then, I’m not sure if that refers to the coolest clocks featuring animals, or clocks featuring the coolest animals. Eh, hardly matters. Both perfectly describe the brand new zoo portrait clocks from our friends at Blik, featuring Barcelona photographer/filmmaker Yago Partel’s hilarious portraits of our furry and feathered friends like you’ve never seen them. Duvet covers from Society6: What all the cool beds will be wearing this year.

We’ve loved the cool indie designs at Society6 on everything from art prints to gadget cases for a long time. So we were pretty stoked to discover that those gorgeous designs are now king-sized. As duvet covers, that is. And yes, queen too. They have hundreds of fun designs, so we’re still narrowing down our choices. It’s not easy.     \       The covers are super soft, machine washable, and include a hidden zipper that doesn’t mar the design. My one disappointment is that they are only offered in queen and king sizes, and I don’t know many kids who sleep in beds that big–unless they’ve...

Modern fairy tale art for girls who want to write their own endings.

Her Sleeping Beauty print is made all that much more sweet with the addition of a unicorn (because, unicorns). It would only be more 2014 if it were Twilight Sparkle, but I give the unicorn points for longevity. However my favorite...

Thought of the day: On pursuing dreams

Sometimes a quote just speaks to you, and these decidedly non-cheesy, very cool inspirational quotes (geez, that phrase really is getting a bad name) come courtesy of illustrator and hand-letterer Noel Shively. I’m trying to figure out just what project we could hire him for, since his sensibility is so fresh and optimistic but still with the slightest edge that keeps it from being flowery or trite. Maybe it’s the project of “I’d like to frame one of these and hang it somewhere.” That would work.     You can find just a few of of his designs for sale...
