The Neato makes the chore of vacuuming suck, in the right way

Take three crumb-dropping kids, a big shedding dog, and a house without air conditioning, and you’ve got one mama who breaks out in a sweat just thinking about vacuuming. But lately, this chore hasn’t required me to do too much more than push a button. Like its predecessor, the previously reviewed Neato XV-11, the new Neato XV-21 robotic vacuum is a suction powerhouse with a motor that lets you know it means business as it revs up like a diminutive jet in my living room. No, it will not achieve lift off.  What makes this newer Neato XV-21 so ideal...

Teddy needs a bath

Poor Bun-Bun. I received the stuffed pink rabbit at my first baby shower for my first baby, and he’s been around and loved ever since. Two houses, two kids, and one horrifying overnight stay in the litterbox had turned Bun-Bun from a cheerful pink to a dingy grayish-brown. “I’m sorry about this, Bun-Bun,” I said, zipping him into the bag. And then I tossed him into the darkness. [don’t miss a giveaway after the jump] The darkness of the clothes washer! C’mon, we’re moms. We don’t throw away beloved stuffed animals just because they get a little yucky. But...

Needs more bluebell.

You know how sometimes, when you’re walking down the sidewalk, you can smell someone’s laundry in the dryer? I’ll admit it–I love that smell. And I’ve missed having it at my own home, since I gave up the high-chemical detergents and started making my own. Good news: one of our favorite brands, Mrs. Meyer’s, has melded the natural with the deliciously-scented, and it smells like bluebells. I’ve been to the Mrs. Meyer’s headquarters, so I’ve seen firsthand how hard they strive to make their products biodegradable and as natural as possible, without phosphates or other harmful chemicals. Having participated...

Stroller technicians are the new massage therapists.

Raise your hand if your stroller needs a good fixin or deep cleaning? Great! Now that I have your attention–every single one of you–I’m thrilled to tell you about a new baby gear detailing service that will reduce the stress of maintaining kiddo’s wheels. At the height of my insanity, I had three strollers. Yup, three. I’ve dealt with nearly every kind of stroller issue imaginable, from flat tires to torn handle bar foam, a bent chassis to missing rivets. All. On. My. Own. (Can you tell I’m a little bitter?) Thanks to Stroller Spa, you don’t have to...

The new Dyson Canister Vacuum – Watch the dust bunnies cower in terror

I had never given much thought about the old canister vacuum I used for years and years: It was a fair little vacuum with a dust-belching bag that I never remembered to replace, and a “retracting cord” feature had stopped retracting years before. But once my mother bought me a Dyson upright, like so many Dyson fans, I was converted immediately and never looked back. Can Dyson tempt me back to a canister with their latest offering? And, if you are still living in the dusty world of vacuum bags, is this the vacuum that will get you bagless? The...

Shower the strollers you love with love

You’re probably going to think I’m crazy, but one of my favorite baby shower gifts in the Cool Mom Picks Baby Shower Gift Guide this year is a stroller cleaning kit. I know. Weird, right? But, hear me out. Not only does the BUGGYLOVE Organic Stroller Cleaning Kit contain everything you’ll ever need to clean and maintain baby’s ride, the products are all made of natural and organic materials. Even the squeak-eliminating Wheel Love is made from citrus and other plant oils. None of that smelly, aerosol stuff you might otherwise have to use. How cool is that? I’ve...

A nursery that smells like…well, not the diaper pail.

My 8-month-old son’s nursery really stinks. He’s very prolific in the poop department, which means a Diaper Dekkor full of smelly diapers. Thankfully, I discovered a new spray that literally spritzes the stink away without icky chemicals. The spray is aptly called Kiddo Stink Away Spray and it’s from the toxin-free, aromatherapeutic skincare line Hellomellow which we fell in love with a couple years back. I’ve been spritzing it after every diaper change and it really works. My son’s room now smells like a delicious mix of essential oils rather than a public restroom. Nice way to start the...

A Method to your holiday madness

Method definitely had me in mind, when they developed soaps and cleaning products that not only look good out in the open, but they smell nice enough that you don’t mind washing everyone else’s dishes. (Ahem.) This year they’ve got a holiday collection that’s so delicious, I can help but hum We Need a Little Christmas while I’m scrubbing pans. This year’s Method holiday collection includes scents like pine, cinnamon (mmmm) and candy cane, making both your dishes, and your children’s hands smell good enough to eat. While I could live without the little ornament motif on some of...

A green dishwasher in shining stainless steel

With such limited kitchen space in New York. we need our kitchen appliances sleek, streamlined and pretty. (And our apartment resellable!) So when my terrible dishwasher went on the fritz after a 30 year run, I kind of freaked. On Twitter. And the folks from Kenmore Appliances were there to rescue me. I will be honest, Sears is not the first place that comes to mind when I think of gorgeous modern kitchen appliances. But gorgeous and modern they are, now keeping up with the high-end brands like Bosch and Miele, only often for a lot less cashola and...

The green laundry detergent that impresses the you-know-what out of me.

When one scoop of detergent can take a toddler diaper Houdini’s bedspread from poop-ravaged nightmare to deliciously clean in just one wash, I have trouble holding back my enthusiasm. Still, it takes more than that to impress me, and I’ve found a brand new laundry detergent that delivers. This utterly rockin’ new Rockin Green detergent is everything that we love. It’s eco-conscious and free of dyes, phosphates, dioxins, parabens, SLS, and animal ingredients. It has formulas for hard, soft, and regular water  But most importantly, it really freakin’ works. I’ve been using Rockin’ Green for several weeks on all...

I got schooled by Mrs. Meyer, and now I clean like the dickens.

Once upon a time, there was a girl who wasn’t a very good housekeeper. Then she flew to Minnesota–which is cooler than she could have imagined–and met a fairy grandmother who taught her that cleanliness is next to just-plain-goodness, because it can actually be pleasant to clean the house if you’re using products that smell awesome and work, too. Did I mention that this is a true story? First of all, there’s a real Mrs. Meyer–that’s her, in the photo, teaching me how to clean a burned-out pot when I took a trip to their headquarters recently. Her name...

Method and Cleanwell sitting in a tree

If I could think of the perfect merger, two companies I love so much that I want them to get together, do things behind closed doors, and then make product babies together, it would probably be Method and Cleanwell. Well guess what? We are so delighted to get to share the brand new breaking news about the new line of Method Antibac, powered by the most awesome Cleanwell which we love because they use plant oils for antibacterial power, and not freaky chemicals. It’s based on thyme, people. Thyme. The Method antibacterial wipes are a new fixture in our...

Good news! You don’t have to alphabetize your spices anymore!

If there was such a thing as Martha Anonymous, TV Host Lisa Quinn’s introduction would go something like this, Hi, My name’s Lisa and it’s been 5 years since my last cranberry wreath.” Sick of trying to live up to the standards of being the perfect wife, mother, and homemaker, Lisa wrote Life’s Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets: Your Ultimate Guide to Domestic Liberation. Speaking as a slacker house frau who doesn’t want to sacrifice style myself, I have officially found my new housekeeping bible. For instance, did you know that there are 10 simple tips that will...

Natural detergent, thy name is Vaska Herbatergent

With three kids and one exercise-loving husband, I do a lot of laundry. Quaint concepts like separating whites, de-tangling socks and pre-treating stains have long flown out the window in the interest of saving time and just-finishing-the-damn-laundry-already. So, I wasn’t sure what kind of results I’d get trying out the Berkeley-based Vaska’s Herbatergent which uses natural herbal cleaning agents. It all sounds nice and eco-friendly, but not exactly as tough as “bleachy-mcStain-fighting-power-scrubbing-bubbles.” But after about 30 loads of laundry, I can tell you that whatever those natural herbal cleaning agents are, they’re working because our clothes look great. Plus...

Fields Organics Toy Cleaner – Better than denial

Back when my kids were teething toddlers, their friends would come over, drool on their toys and leave me with a pile of stuff covered in germs. If I had Fields Organics Toy Cleaner back then, I could’ve given those toys a quick spray-and-wipe, but instead I either had to drag them to the sink or — cough — ignore them and hope no one was too germy. Update: this product no longer is produced. Fields Organics Toy Cleaner uses organic tea tree oil along with other plant-based organic oils and spring water to clean off non-porous things like...

Dish soap that turns your kitchen sink into an aromatherapy spa. (Except for that whole doing the dishes part.)

I have heard nothing but raves about Mrs. Meyer’s household cleaners and I have no idea why it took me so long to try them out myself. Because, now that I have, just you go ahead and count me in among the ravers. Washing dishes is literally my most despised of all chores, and the fact that the lavender dish soap made me kind of almost sort of look forward to it, is the biggest compliment I can give it. Aside from being (mostly) natural, biodegradable and phosphate-free, it is literally the best-smelling household cleaning product I have ever...

Yes, there is a baby detergent that actually gets the clothes clean.

I realize there’s something wonderful about the scent of clean fresh laundry — except around our house, that means someone’s used the wrong detergent. With a bunch of kids with sensitive skin, we’re always on the lookout for gentle, baby-safe laundry detergent that’s free of as many chemicals as possible. So I was excited to hear that Dropps, a past favorite pick of ours, has come out with a baby version of their handy pod detergent system. This completely dye-free and enzyme-free formula is super tough on the baby laundry (unlike that big named baby detergent brand – ahem)...

Better living through less chemistry – natural cleaning products from Better Life

One of the first things I did when I started working again was hire a house cleaner, so when I needed to test Better Life’s natural cleaning products, I called in the pros to try them out. Of course my request was initially met with skepticism by my professional house cleaners: Evidently lots of their clients hand them all-natural products and the results are never quite as good as the chemical stuff, as most of us know. But with Better Life’s amazing smelling What-Ever! all natural all-purpose cleaner, they liked it! They really liked it! What-Ever! (exclamation point theirs)...

Clean Freak Confessions – Ours and hopefully, yours

Most of our sponsors are kind enough to run banner ads here which help support us so we can keep doing that thang we do. But sometimes we have a sponsor like Hoover who does something really cool like develop a site as fun as Clean Freak Confessions. Essentially, it’s a place we — along with bloggers like Dooce, Ree of Pioneer Woman, Amalah and more–can wax on about about all of our weird germ issues, stain obsessions and cleaning conundrums, – and we’d love if you’d weigh in too. (Please? We really don’t want to feel alone with...

Mmm, milky

I never thought I’d say this but I’m kind of over lavender room sprays. Especially for the nursery, I want something a little fresher and cleaner, not so sweet. And then I found the Milk fragrance from the environmentally responsible St Louis apothecary, K Hall Designs and thought YES, that’s exactly it. The Milk scent is actually a light combo of coconut, vanilla and cream but trust me, it doesn’t smell at all like a shot you’d do on Spring Break (which is kind of how it sounds). If you’re not into spritzing the air around the babe, it...

Clean up, clean up, everybody clean up

Now that my youngest is mobile– and, thanks to the open-plan design of our house, cannot easily be confined with baby gates– I’ve had to buckle down and get serious about keeping the floor clean. A few stray Cheerios can bolster his immune system, but anything more than that is too icky to contemplate. Then again, I’m not thrilled by the thought of him licking a chemical-laden floor either. What’s a mom to do? Buy the Bissell Steam Mop, that’s what. This natural cleaning solution is awesome, whether you’ve got a baby crawling around or a gaggle of teens...
